The cover is from the upcoming Owlcrusher. This list will probably expand and then start to implode when I have shared what I thought was worth sharing. Gonna try and keep it up to the best 20, last year
though I could only find 11 albums worth recing.

1. Pissgrave - Posthumous Humiliation
(8,5) (nasty disgusting death metal) Death metal that tries to rip out my guts by creating a firm grip with its nastiness and then wriggles them lose with elegance. This album has emptied me a couple of times already and I am pretty sure that we wont have any better death metal this year - besides the obvious nice vocals and the nasty grindy death that makes this an interesting album this is great and varied death metal that doesnt waste a single precious second. The doomy closer is just cherry on the cake.
2. Sutekh Hexen - Sutekh Hexen
(8,0) (black metal ambient noise) This is a bit more ambient than I expected, probably would have liked a more traditional black metal album with some noise but this album has begun to grow on me. The second part of the album where the tempo goes up a bit is very good and the first part is a nice build up to that. The album has an arty touch but the outburts of faster black metal gets even more powerful then. Lengthy and very varied album that needs lots of listening….
3. Akrotheism - Law of Seven Deaths
(8,0) (some kind of dense and epic black metal) Unironic occult black metal that gets away with it without getting cheesy. After some fast drumming it becomes mainly slow-paced and has a dragging feel to it with occasional outburts in tempo. The style is quite original but nothing is original in black metal anymore so its a blend between french black metal and other modern styles, but the unirony and pacing is traditional. Theres epicness here that reminds me of the latest Bölzer.
4. Hell (USA) - Primitive Man / Hell [Split]
(8,0) (top notch heavy sludge) Two of the best, if not the best, sludge bands do a split which is more or less perfect but its a split so its more of a remainder how crushed i wanna be by these bands when they release their full-lengths again. The Primitive Man side is absolutely fucking glorious and I love the black elements, the Hell side is a bit more laid back but after a couple of spins that riff gets addictive - glorious stuff. Probably the most quality release this year, but its just a split.
5. Miscarriage - Imminent Horror
(8,0) (sludge/drone/grindcore) I would love to review this as its the coolest release this year, but I cant - what the fuck is going on here... This is probably how it sounds like when I am gonna die - death is the sound of dirty sludge thats slowed down grindcore. It reminds me a bit of ZÖN, sure they play a bit different genres but as with ZÖN this is unstructured and experimental but still very enjoyable, and this is probably an album that stands being repeated lots of times, but at the same time this is quite a long album too long?
6. Ataraxie - Résignés
(8,0) (unique death/doom) Death doom is a dead genre that occasionally wakens from the slumbers of death, more preciously that awakening is taking place when Ataraxie or some of their sister bands release new albums. This is just another piece in the puzzle which depicts one of the strongest discs in the genres history. The uniqueness of this bands comes solely from them doing their own stuff, but that also means that their sound stays within a certain frame of predictability. Unique, predictable and stunning - their releases move between excellent and very good - now its very good , now its perfect, now its excellent...and so on...But this is quite a lengthy album and it could have been a bit more extreme at times as it isnt as exiting all the time. The closing track with the spoken word Brel stuff and its build in to death doom terrirory is a killer.
7. Drastus - La Croix de Sang
(8,0) (french one man black metal) One man black metal that is very dense and It has the typical french sound but this is an album thats a bit more aggressive than its influences, at the same time it sounds quite original with its sovereing, triumphant satanism. I am not sure I like the cleans that much but I guess it offers some diversity in the the swirling aggressiveness.
8. At Dusk - Condemned
(7,5) (depressive suicidal black metal I guess) This is probably how dsbm should sound today to be interesting - gone are the cheesiest of melodic parts and the post-rockish semi-melancholic stuff and singing about killing yourself on every album. Instead this is quite a dense album that it takes a while to find nuances in. The denseness of the black metal that has a slight touck of death at times is broken up with ambient samplings and short melodic keyboard parts. I think theres a interesting story in here as well that are narrated by the samplings. Great follow up to a great debut.
9. Perverticon - Wounds of Divinity
(7,5) (swedish second wave black metal) This is a bit of dissection worship but with a slightly higher tempo, denser and more evil, probably not as good though. I dont care much for the religious theme as such but its black metals roots so some anti-religious stuff is good for the overall feeling of the album and its a bit modernized with nice samplings. This is an extremly well made album that shows that traditional black metal still is great, and tbh second wave is a bit more interesting than usbm at the moment.
10. Crevasse - Split with VONT
(7,5) (hardcore sludge/ elctronic noise) Very promising song from Crevasse who leaves their d-beat roots for a slower sound. Its still 100% angry and political. VONT is blackned electronica with distorted vocals, great.
11. Big Brave - A Gaze Among Them
(foxy sludgy modern foxy experimental foxy doom)
12. ………………………………...
13. Sanguine Eagle - Shores Of Avarice/ Storm Mysticism
(yellow eyed black metal)
14. Celestial Grave - Secular Flesh
(slightly raw greece inspired finnish black metal)
15. Lingua Ignota - Caligula
(feminist lovely beautiful noise)
16. Pathetic - Rat King
(great black death)
17. False - Portent
dense organic black metal
18. Mizmor - Cairn
(black doom doom black)
19. Lvcifyre - Sacrament
20. Abyssal - A Beacon In The Husk
atmospheric black/death
21. Yellow Eyes - Rare Field Ceiling
(yellow eyed black metal)
22. Volahn - El Tigre Del Sur
(black twilight black metal)
23. Owlcrusher - Monuments Of Shame
heavy as fuck sludge
24. ……………………………….
25. A Stick and a Stone
(beautiful ohohoho doom)
26. Diocletian - popular black/death
27. Mitochondrion
black death metal
28. Khthoniik Cerviiks
next level proggy death metal
29. Possession - Splits with Venefixion and Spite
black/death black
30. Haunter
usbm
31. Velnias
near earth doom
32. My Dying Bride
classic death/doom
33. Funeral Moth
shogun funeral doom
34. Jupiterian
catchy sludge/doom
35. Lacolpa
black noisy sludge
36. Cavernlight
doooom
37. Bölzer
epic death/black metal

I highly doubt Funeralium will release an album this year, since, first of all Ataraxie will release a new one and secondly, Funeralium released their previous one as recently as 2017.

Yeah your probably right. But I am gonna keep them here so Jooe is reminded of their sludgy sound whenever he drops by here for a visit

Wheres Swallow The Sun

If they were here I probably would have to delete all the others as it seems that and that taste are not compatible.
