Black Metal For Beginners

Here is a list of bands I've been listening since I started listening more black metal this year. I've never been much into black metal but I've found a good number of more melodic and atmospheric bands. Some of the bands are more black metal and some less but the element is there. I've also listed my favorite album of the bands. Bands aren't in any particular order. My favorites are at the top but new bands will be added to the bottom of the list.

1. Summoning - Stronghold
2. Moonsorrow - Jumalten Aika
3. Windir - 1184
4. Zornheym - Where Hatred Dwells and Darkness Reigns
5. Melechesh - Emissaries

Death Metal I enjoy the most

Here's a little list displaying my personal favorite death metal albums, based on the same idea as my heavy metal list, thus stressing the raw and the genuine. For me death metal has to be crushing, then coloured with atmosphere. Some of my choices may seem exotic, considering the list overall, but it's what broadens it. Rules : one album per band, the order isn't strict (still bottom albums are weaker than their predecessors). Many good tbdm bands are lacking, mostly because of their unfitting sound. If you think some kick-ass piece are missing, don't hesitate to suggest them. Enjoy.

1. Carcass - Necroticism: Descanting The Insalubrious
2. Suffocation - Pierced From Within
3. Orphaned Land - El Norra Alila
4. Cynic - Focus
5. Septicflesh - Εσοπτρον

The Mightiest Albums Annually

Mightiest = albums I can listen to almost anytime/anywhere - no matter how many times they never wear out - and always give me pleasure, power, euphoria, goosebumps, inspiration and many other nasty things.
One album per year obviously, with some years missing in case i have not yet found an album mighty enough from that year.
Recommendations appreciated.

1. Amorphis - Under The Red Cloud
2. Anaal Nathrakh - Desideratum
3. Battle Beast - Battle Beast
4. Be'lakor - Of Breath And Bone
5. Skeletonwitch - Forever Abomination

That Cold Black Magic, By Glenn Killer And His Thorchestra

Same deal as my doom list: this is for my own organizational purposes and is designed purely to help me keep track of all the many black metal bands and albums that I enjoy, since I can't keep all of this information in my head. It has no other benefit whatsoever and will likely result in tantrums should anyone else see it. I'm aware that I haven't listened to every black metal album that I should have. I only went down to the 7s on this list, so it's possible that I have listened to your favorite album that you desperately need to suggest and I thought it was terrible. There are a lot of heinously incompetent black metal bands out there.

1. Forefather - Ours Is The Kingdom
2. Sigh - Graveward
3. Forefather - Steadfast
4. Dissection - Storm Of The Light's Bane
5. Mayhem - De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas

Systematic Desensitization: Black Metal Edition

For many, some of the more extreme types of metal can be challenging to penetrate. I'll admit that my first time listening to Burzum was nearly the equivalent of listening to a buzz-saw. But over time, I found my ears became acclimated, so to speak. All of the beauty and subtlety within became more and more apparent. Now I find listening to Darkthrone to be little different from listening to Vivaldi. Okay, maybe that is an overstatement, but you get the idea. The point of this list to help those looking for a more gradual path from unkvlt to kvlt, if you will. IHopefully it provides some assistance. The top represents some of the more mainstream, well-produced (but still solid) releases, while working your way down results in a stripping away of sound quality, melody, and radio-friendly content. The list ends with a mixture of gritty second wave and mentally challenging avant guarde stuff. This is far from comprehensive, so feel free to hit the forums for some deeper cuts. I also welcome thoughts on reordering as this was no easy task for one set of ears.

1. Dimmu Borgir - Death Cult Armageddon
2. Melechesh - Enki
3. Enslaved - Axioma Ethica Odini
4. Immortal - All Shall Fall
5. Dimmu Borgir - Enthrone Darkness Triumphant
