If you would have said about "filler" tracks, i may have agreed with you. But none of those words you said here has any sort of relevance whatsoever. First of all, this record was way ahead of its time. Secondly, it's not overrated at all; they have got comprehensive ratings across all major platforms. Lastly, no metal fan worships Slipknot's debut album rather they praise its quality and bombastic sales it made when it came out.

I agree that it was ahead of it's time, but it also takes a lot of influence from bands like Korn and Limp Bizkit who had already been around before this, Slipknot just uped the game. I wouldn't say no metal fans worship this, but I do see a lot around the internet. But yes, you are correct, I went a little overboard.

Fantastic Slipknot album. In my opinion, this is their second best album. Only Iowa is better than this one. This album is a lot like Kill Em All in the sense it was made from raw energy. The first five tracks on this album still make me head bang (especially sic, seriously, my God, what an amazing opener). However, as with Kill Em All, this album wasn't as focused as the material that was to come later. Iowa is essentially Slipknot's Master of Puppets in the sense it is more focused and well executed. That being said, this is one of the best Metal releases of the modern age. It's incredibly heavy, vocals are unique and awesome, the drums/percussion (thanks to Joey, Chris, and Shawn) are relentless, and the turntables don't piss me off like with other Nu Metal releases (although I still do not classify Slipknot as Nu Metal, this album had certain Nu Metal elements). Although I do not think Slipknot will ever release an album like this again, I still hope the next one is at least in the same league as this one.

This album is way more clever and unique than what I expected. What I expected was just a mishmash of loud mindless riffs and growling vocals, being loud and brutal for the sake of it. But it turned out to have a very unique groove and vibe, the musicianship is tight, ideas and songs are original. IMO, they never topped this level of songwriting ever again.

Agreed. The first half is a 9/10 for me, but the latter is 7/10.

It's funny, this album is raw as hell even compared to their other releases. it really sounds to me like a bunch of depressed angry 17 year olds with different musical backgrounds came together and just poured their negative emotions and energy into creating this. Corey's raps are fantastic too. got to love how authentic this album feels, they just didn't give a shit about writing anything that might sell albums, and paradoxically it did sell.

Raw and authentic, that's about right. This album came as shock back then. It was raw, violent, in-your-face, and aggressive, in complete opposition with the truckloads of bandwagon-jumpers that had begun to devolve nu metal into a trendy, emotionally-stunted, whiny parody of the teenage angst and anger it was supposed to convey initially. A breath of fresh air in a stale environment.

The only other Nu Metal band that I can think of that did this exact thing was Korn with their debut (which was also self-titled, hah!). Both bands trully achieved an "I don't give a fuck" attitude that was violent but extremely honest.

Exactly. And both albums are dirty, ugly, suffocating, would never in a million years have been anyone's first pick for commercial success, yet they achieved a cult status. All is good.

I feel like I was missing out in my teens because I never really got into the Nu metal scene, that was dominating metal during that time. I was never a fan of Slipknot, despite their huge popularity during my teens. I've listened to this album many times now, and give it chance to see if it would grow on me.
I find the first 6 songs are at least listenable, but I can never get into the rest of the album, I feel like there is alot of angry noise going on, but it is lacking melody/hooks, and I don't like the angry shouting vocal style either, and the rapping is really not my thing.
I will have to go back through the rest of their discography, but from what I remember, this was one of my favourite album of theirs.

Amazing album, 2nd place behind Iowa but so far clear of everything else. Only thing stopping it from being perfect is that it doesn't feel like a combined musical experience, something Iowa manages to do
