Early this January, I published an 8.6 review of Liturgy's November 2019 album H.A.Q.Q.. This was about three years after I saddled 2015's The Ark Work with one of the most vitriolic reviews I've ever written, so I thought that that H.A.Q.Q. review was going to be the biggest shock I received in 2020.

Wow, I'm surprised how much I really loved this. Now I have to go back and check out their past discography. First time that I felt that I wanted to ramp up the rating to a perfect 10. This is how you properly use how it sounds like an orchestra. Not like all those crappy symphonic bands.

If you ever want to get your mind blown check out Hunter Hunt-Henrix's instagram page. It's... Something, that's for sure.

This album is ass for the most part. In typical Liturgy fashion it's 30 minutes of bullshit and 5 minutes of the best music ever.

This is the first time I think I've properly listened to a Liturgy album. I know they're an easy punching bag so I was hoping I'd like it, but it didn't work for me at all really. I know the really avant-garde jazzy bits are meant to be unstructured and chaotic, but I feel like there's a fine line between doing something formless and chaotic yet effective, and something that's just incoherent and redundant, and a bit too much of this felt like the latter, although there were moments I liked (I liked the full-blast end to The fall of siheymn and a tiny bit of the part leading into that, but not most of the part that led into it). The trap beat/piano/scream combo on the next track was a bit more appealing

I actually didn't hate this but it's surprisingly sloppy for someone who likely goes to great lengths to ensure every aspect of this sounds exactly the way he envisions. It also feels stagnant after the first few tracks, with variation only coming in the form of the wannabe orchestral arrangements that essentially repeat the same formula. I guess it's sort of a meticulous mess of ideas that jumble their way through to the end of each song, which isn't the worst thing to grace the metal scene, but it's far from being a noteworthy contribution.
