For 15 years I have awaited a worthy sequel to A Matter Of Life And Death, and after a couple of suboptimal offerings in a row, I began to despair that Iron Maiden had succumbed to the solipsistic lethargy that eclipses so many titans of their stature and longevity.

Yeah I guess it was the best Maiden album since, at least 2015.

Welcome to Metal Storm!

As you may have noticed, our rating system is based on a scale of 1/10 to 10/10. Some people confuse Metal Storm with other sites where all you have is a "like" button to express your level of appreciation, but no opportunity to give a more nuanced opinion. However, we encourage our users to use the full spectrum of the rating scale and not to award the highest (or the lowest) score in such an inflationary manner as if there were no gradations. You can find the FAQ on our rating system here.

That said, your comment reveals a contradiction, because your album ratings are devoid of any nuances and therefore free of any meaningfulness. If you really have a personal top 3, then you should reserve the highest possible score for these three albums, but not for the entire discographies of Iron Maiden and Bruce Dickinson including Virtual XI and Skunkworks...

Please reconsider your rating habits. Otherwise, a moderator may stumble across your profile and revoke your permission to rate albums.

Hi, I am very glad you answered me. I checked out this site and I really like it! And about my evaluations are my personal opinion and I do not oblige anyone with it, and for Virtual XI and Skunkwork are my favorite albums, because I do not distinguish between my love For Bruce and for Blaze Bailey, but I look at it from a professional musical point of view and I am 100 % sure most of the low ratings are protesting Bruce leaving! Whatever! I'm so glad to have that site!

Nobody was protesting anything. Sure, people regretted Bruce leaving, but Bruce was kind of burnt out after the long Fear of the Dark tour, he needed a break, wanted to work with other musicians, then he released Balls to Picasso which a lot of people loved (myself included).

The low ratings for the Blaze era come because of the poor song-writing I'm afraid, especially for Virtual XI.

Okay, let's try a different approach then.

It's perfectly fine that Iron Maiden is your favorite band. And if you really think that everything they have ever recorded is an absolute masterpiece, then let's pretend for the moment that that's okay too. But please imagine if every MS user only voted for their favorite albums and always gave the highest rating. Then each of the 178,000 albums on Metal Storm - even Lulu - would have an average score of 10 and the rating system would be an absolutely pointless farce. It would have lost all of its meaning, just as your personal ratings have no significance if you only give 10s.

So, do you want to have fair album ratings or do you want to get rid of all album scores that are lower than 10?
This is a very simple but genuine question and I'd really like to hear your honest answer.

There's nothing professional in giving an entire discography straight 10s. That's just rating abuse in its purest form. My favourite band is and will always be Pantera. Still it would never cross my mind to rate all their albums 10 because not all their albums are 10s. For me it's Far Beyond Driven because it was the very first CD I ever bought as a kid way back in 1994 and it's been with me since then and I play it regularly. Cowboys From Hell is also a 10, simply because it's a groundbreaking album that literally started a whole genre, groove metal, and is one of the greatest albums ever made. I don't even think Vulgar Display Of Power is a 10 and I know many fans will disagree with me here, but that album hasn't had the same impact on me as the other two. Therefore it's not a 10 in my book.

When it comes to Maiden, the only perfect 10 album they've made is Powerslave imo and maybe Brave New World and I haven't even rated those albums here on the site. I know I've said this before in the forum but the only album or albums deserving of a 10 is the one or those two, maybe three albums that you always put on when listening to a band that you like. The very first album you come to think of and that you want to put on when you feel like listening to some Maiden, that's your 10. If you're gonna say now that you listen to all 17 albums Maiden has released equally much, then I'm sorry to say it, but you're just talking shit because that's just not true.

Also, coming in as a new user on the site, thinking that our rules of rating doesn't apply to you as well, you're gravely mistaken. The rules apply to ALL users, including us in the staff. Rating everything 10 is just diminishing our rating system and making the ratings pointless, just as Starvynth says. We're glad that you found Metal Storm and that you're enjoying the site but arrogance will get you nowhere and rating everything 10 will just make you lose your permission to rate. I'm not gonna say it's a fact but maybe Starvynth can answer that too, but my assumption would be that 7 and 8 are the two most common ratings handed out by our users and between 6 and 9 is where most ratings are given.

All we ask of our users is to hand out the 10s only to those very special albums of theirs and to rate more nuanced without the excessive use of the highest numbers. Same goes with the 1s btw. Don't tank an entire discography just because you dislike a band because that too might lead to you losing your rating permission.

I guess it will depend on what criteria one uses while rating albums. I'm 100% sure that your criteria are completely different from mine. And from lots of other people's too.

My favourite band is and will always be Pantera. Still it would never cross my mind to rate all their albums 10 because not all their albums are 10s. So this is an insight into your criteria. Please let me give you my mine. Well, actually, I have only one criterion for a 10 - it's how much joy the album gave me. Take Cathedral's "Carnival Bizarre". I'm pretty sure that I'm the only person around that will rate this album with a 10. And do you know why? Because I spent endless hours on a train, listening to this album over and over while reading, back when the album was released. Is this enough to give this album a 10, in your opinion? Is the fact that an album was the first CD you had ever bought enough to give it a 10 in my opinion?

One more point.
Imagine that I've heard 1,000 albums, out of which 75 I rate with a 10. I come to Metalstorm and rate only these 75 albums. I don't bother with the other 925 albums and leave them unrated. You then check my votes and call me a vote abuser, because all my ratings are 10's. See my point?

My standpoint is that of The rules of rating albums as stated in the FAQ: "Metal Storm has a clearly delineated system, with each score of 1 through 10 assigned a meaning - 1 being "worst ever" and 10 being "perfect". Follow the guidelines of that system. A 10/10 is a masterpiece, an album that changed the way we listen to music nowadays, something that stays with you your entire life. It's Ashes Against The Grain, Panopticon, and Sad Wings Of Destiny. It's not for every album, EP, single, and DVD released by your favorite band, it's not for something you passively enjoyed and will forget next week, it's not just to mark that you listened to something. Similarly, a 1/10 is a travesty, an album so appallingly unbearable that it's surprising you even lasted one full listen on the basis of which to rate the album. It's Dedicated To Chaos, Graveyard Classics, and... well, frankly, very few albums are that bad."

I don't care about your reason for giving an album a 10. Your reason for rating The Carnival Bizarre a 10 is as legit as any other.

But, and there is a but, if you rate strictly 10s to 75 albums from 75 different bands or handing out 75 10s to just three bands, say Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and AC/DC, I'd say that is a pretty damn big difference. So your point is very simplified and handling rating abuse isn't that easy. There's a lot of factors to take into account. The ratio between total votes and 10s, the total amount of 10s (having, say a 1000 10s, is just ridiculous no matter how many albums you've listened to), which albums are the 10s given to and are entire discographies rated solely with 10s (or 1s for that matter, tanking works the same way), how long the user has been a member of MS compared to the amount of ratings given, how active is the user on the site and in the forums and if the user been warned for rating abuse before.
Taking all this into consideration and making an assessment is no easy task which I don't take lightly either. On top of that I'm the only one on this site dealing with rating abuse right now and as you can read in Starvynth's comment above, we have 178000 albums in our database which makes this a completely impossible task for me to handle. There will always be users that get upset for being warned, having their ratings deleted and get temporarily/permanently banned, it's unavoidable. But long time users that are still active in the forums and contributing to our community will always be treated more leniently than those that haven't posted a single comment or contributed in any other way than spamming ratings.

I hope this clarifies how I deal with rating abuse.
