An extreme metal debut album with 25-minute songs: is this a funeral doom band, or an overelaborate prog band? Neither, it's a death metal band whose songs never fucking end.

This quote from the Bardo Methodology interview shows what kind of elitist douche runs this band:
"Being sane of mind and thus sharing what should be the common opinion that TOOL are absolute garbage..."
That said, this is a decent if derivative album. A bit drawn out and self indulgent as well. The production is far and away the best thing about it.

I will admit that quote from the interview was quite offputting but I still love the album.

And I certainly don't fault you for it. It's a fine album. I really like the sound of it. The songwriting has thus far (after 3 listens) failed to captivate me. I enjoy the sort of stream of consciousness feel to it though.

I agree, it's a really strong sound, super cavernous, but the album's a bit too drawn out for its own good

Production, length, all fall flat for impact when I saw this length and remembered the last death oriented epic that hit me in a piercing way. Which, being honest now, without trying to sound like OP, dominates this. Even in its art which seems as if we're in a very pastel-oriented era was the biggest take I reaped, besides seeing Greg Chandler and his Priory. Having thrice sessions, although you could do worse, feels like such a disservice towards precious time.

I may not have the largest collection but I certainly have the absolute best
