Has there ever been a better example of a band carrying on in the absence of its figurehead than Stratovarius? Struggling to survive during the last days of Timo Tolkki, the current iteration of the band has now released an album called Survive while positively thriving.

I'm looking forward to it, one of the few good Euro-power bands.

And one of the even fewer euro-power bands that release good material to this day.

After a couple of listens to the album, I'm honestly surprised. I didn't expect the album to be so consistent. Most melodies, solos, riffs, chorus work really well. I find the album better than Eternal, and a bit close to being as good as Nemesis, which for me was the band's masterpiece in the new era. So all in all really well done album. These guys are really still going strong after all these years, and they are probably the most consistent power metal band

One rare case when long album is good, ist it me or i dont recognize Timo Kotipelto vocals? He sings so lov as quited, somehow is it bad budget album? But its good, catcghy windy melodies, good music, good lyrics all well mixed in one. Nothing can beats first 2 and 1th whit Timo, bnut to me this might be their best after ''Infinite'' album.

A Nice Guy
A very good record, one of the best power metal releases of the year which is very unsurprising tbh, as we know exactly what this band is capable of. They are one of the few power metal bands that have a fairly consistent discography, and have released some pretty solid records, this album could well be up there with their best imo.

The vocals are still top notch, the songwriting is of much higher quality than most power metal bands these days, the guitarwork is excellent, and there is an endless amount of catchy melodies and memorable moments. Most importantly there's no over the top cheesiness about it.

"Demand", "Survive", and "Frozen In Time", are quality tracks imo, but the main stand outs for me are "Voice Of Thunder", "Firefly" and "Glory Days", which are up there with the best the band has ever written imho.

This is perhaps the most consistently good stratovarius record. It's also their most coherent. Not a single song feels lackluster or out of place. The drawback here is that there is not a single song that really stands out as album's best. The previous records had "Elysium", "Out of The Fog", "Castles in the Air", "Nemesis" or "My Eternal Dream". The benefit of that is that the album flows much more naturally, than any other modern stratovarius record, and for people like me who listen generally listens to albums in their entirety, it's a very good thing.

Stylistically it feels more in vein to their already streamlined "Eternal", but this time it's even more streamlined and more riff-centered. Altough the songwritting is way more straight-forward, it never feels as if they had to compromise between heaviness and power metal catchiness.

I deeply loved their style of "strongly influenced by traditional heavy metal progressive power metal" presented on "Nemesis", but that style didn't pay off for every song. The newest strato output on the other hand, commits to the "progressive power metal" style entirely and the end result is their most compact album yet.

Matias Kupiainen is, as for every single album in the Elysium-Survive run, amazing. He gives the impression of someone who isn't afraid to leave his passion on the record even tho he is surrounded by band members of much bigger fame. He is probably the best thing that could happen to the band after the departure of Timo Tolkki.
Lauri Porra proves yet again to be one of the best power metal bassists in the game. It's very rare for bassist in this genre to have such a high pressence on the record, but hell I'm glad it's not the case for him.
I also must admit, that Timo Kotipelto improved a lot over the years. Personally, I always though his vocals were pretty mediocre, but couldn't deny that his voice is iconic in some way (something like Dave Mustaine for Megadeth). I recommend checking his vocals on "Polaris" just for a reference to see his advancement.

I knew Stratovarius would not release something subpar, but I didn't expect for their next album to be their most stylistically consistent yet.

Really solid album, IMO is better than Eternal, but doesn't reach the level of Nemesis. It has some memorable songs, and some of them are very catchy, but i feel it's a little monotonous, some songs feels alike.

You clearly have not heard what passes for pop these days or even in the last couple of decades.

The songs are just good enough to be distinguishable, but just *not* good enough for me to really want to return to any tracks, with perhaps the exception of "We Are Not Alone." It feels to me like they've been on a downward trajectory since after Nemesis (my fav of theirs). At this point, they have their formula and they know it works, and I just can't imagine that we'll get a masterpiece from them moving forward, probably just more albums in the 6 to 8 score range.

Yeah that’s what I hate about a lot of metalheads. It’s not bad because it’s genuinely bad, it’s bad because it’s pop!

This is sounding so much better than Eternal. Really digging it, especially the music, really solid, innovative, modern while keeping the Strato spirit alive.
Even Timo Kotipelto seems to have better vocals than in Eternal.
