Let's go back in time and visit the birth of the 90s. When the Norwegian scene was forming its very own sound and image in the north, in the south at the same time another scene of the same genre, black metal, was developing, the Greek black metal scene. Rotting Christ and Varathron were the two bands destined to define and haunt the overall sound of the Greek black metal scene, yet only one of them would become very known abroad and become nowadays a deeply respectable with a cult past band in the world of extreme metal, Rotting Christ.

Surprised at all praise this gets. It's really nothing special whatsoever to my ears. Boring musicianship and sound and almost no atmosphere to speak of.

Not just here though. Everywhere I look it seems to be considered a masterpiece.

Evrywhere I look all of Rotting Christ seems to be reagrded as the second coming of Christ, except for their demo's which are mostly superior to any of their later stuff.

Probably you're not a masterpiece so it's beyond your capability to recognize it.

The only Rotting Christ's album can be considered as Pure Black Metal. The rest are Hybrid Black Metal.

Strong debut as far as I'm concerned. Not my favorite from the band, but still fun to revisit.

I've been revisiting this one alot recently, it's become my second favourite Rotting Christ album behind Theogonia. This particular album is fantastic, "4th Knight Of Revelation" is probably my favourite track, but this style of early Greek black metal is quite addictve for me, it's fairly simplistic, but the riffs are very melodic, and easy on the ears, and I like the way they were produced too, there was a certain rawness and unpolished sound.

His Majesty At The Swamp by Varathron is very similar to this, but the production is even more raw and edgy, I'm always on the look out for albums/bands with similar sound and melodies to this.

Yeah I really love the atmosphere and the simple yet effective riffs.

Oh thanks for reminding me of that! It had popped up in my recommendations on YouTube and I listened to a bit of it and noticed it has a similar style. I haven't listened to it all though- and I totally forgot about it until now!
