A decent blend of brutal and old school death metal, with the hard slamming riffs, powerful growls and classic a heavy buzzsaw tone, however nothing all that interesting or memorable about the songwriting here just a typically powerful, brutal and aggressive standard death metal release with a decent sound quality. "Beacon of Loss" is the clear stand out track here for me.

I still don't know the difference between "brutal death metal", "death metal" or OSDM. All death metal is brutal, maybe except melodic death metal. The 'brutal' adjective does not help in any way... Somebody please explain.

It's a tricky one, I've always found brutal death metal to have much more complex and technical structure, played at a faster tempo than OSDM, which for me is usually played at a more mid-tempo range, with simpler and more melodic riffing. I've always found OSDM easier to get into than brutal death, most people would probably say brutal death is just OSDM speeded up but I think there's a bit more to it than that.

Somebody please explain.

Andy makes some good points and you can also do some quick listening to hear the differences for yourself.

For instance, Pierced From Within (Suffocation) is a brutal death metal album released in 1995, but differs immensely from Domination (Morbid Angel), a death metal album, of the same year.

That's mostly because death metal evolved from thrash, and brutal death metal fine-tuned the aggressiveness with a focus on chunky slam riffs. But it isn't always about pacing -- just look at Bolt Thrower and Autopsy on the slower end of things while Deicide and Vader approach the genre with an emphasis on speed.

It's kind of like trying to explain the difference between heavy metal and hard rock. There's a lot of crossover and mutual influence but you should be able to tell the difference with the ear test for the most part.

To think that all the effort I went to explaining the difference in last year's Party Cannon thread did not do the trick... *sad noises*

my bad, death metal is rather hit and miss with me, I've always struggled to navigate the genre.

This is the album I'm going to overrate the hardest this year. It comforted me during my first and only Covid illness and brings a smile to my face every time guru firemane starts to growl. Thanks Nothingness!
