It’s a project that shot to relative stardom based on the back of a (very well executed) gimmick, but Zeal & Ardor have been striving since Stranger Fruit to evolve beyond said gimmick and progress as a forward-thinking band. It’s a journey that they’re still on, but perhaps finding a little (Zeal &) harder on Greif.

Damn this is rough I thought Zeal would bounce back after the last record, but it got even more bland. “Solace” is a lovely moody track though.

Yeah, I can appreciate them still trying to find ways to avoid getting too stuck in one gimmick, but I found a lot of this to be very boring

I couldn't get into their previous album at all, and so far I've been struggling with this one, although it does have it's moments. It's definitely going to require further listening.

Edit: Yep, it has a few solid ideas and moments scattered here and there ("Solace" being the only real highlight for me) but I'm not into the album as a whole. I understand them trying something original and really out there, but I just find the majority of the track structures irritating tbh.

I don't dislike this at all. It's just very different. I totally get not wanting to do the same thing forever; I just wish it had some heavier sections sprinkled in a bit more. Still a pretty solid record though. It'll probably grow on me.

I really liked the last album and the fearlessness with which he was experimenting. I also like that Gagneux has included the band in the creative process on this one. I don't think it is as strong as the last one, but I also think they are working out a creative process and will hopefully have that gel better next time out. This has promise, but not quite enough newness and spark.

First impression: a colossal dissapointment. Clawing Out, Solace and Fend You Off are the only notable highlights here, the rest is either cringeworthy, sugarcoated wannabe alt rock or rehash of past ideas.
The thrill is gone now and solace is nowhere to be found. Perhaps, a subsequent listen will provide me some...?

Edit- This isn't getting any better. Dissapointment of the year.

First impression: a colossal dissapointment.

Pretty much my feel for Z&A, and since then never bothered to look back.

Could never top Devil Is Fine. This band is a tragedy.

I'm sad to say this was a dissapoint to me. Almost 6.5/10. I needed more church choir and heavier sections. It sounds bland and boring mostly. I love the band and their older stuff and live shows. Tried to listen to Greif like 3 or 4 times but it just didn't do it for me.

Good Greif, what a disappointment. No cohesion, all over the place. I can only add to the pile of great disappointment.
