This is my first encounter with this Canadian veteran Death Metal act, so I can't really tell you about the evolution of their music, or how this album is different from the others, and all that crap, I could of course, search reviews of all of their previous albums, and copy + paste slightly changed commentaries from other critics, I could say that I followed these guys since their early releases back in 1992, I could make an extensive review about the line-up changes (if there's been any), the progress of the band among Metal fans, and so on, but instead of that I prefer to do a very simple review, Kataklysm - Serenity Under Fire from my point of view, old time Metalhead, first time Kataklysm Listener.

A staff guy...
Decided to revisit this album today and it's still their best album, imo.

How is this album rated so highly? It's so generic and unmemorable. There are only 2 or 3 tracks above mediocre level. The rest is totally forgettable.

I know for me I used to hold Kataklysm in much higher regard when I first started exploring death metal, especially Canadian death metal, when I was younger. It took a while for the nostalgia to wear off and I no longer consider any of their albums to be top-tier. It's possible the high ratings are from people who simply haven't revisited the album in a while or people still just happen to be wowed by this style. At the time it almost seemed revolutionary to a certain degree, despite its formulaic structure.

8.4 is a really high rating when the top albums in this site are barely 9. But maybe even more shocking is this being above In The Arms Of Devastation, which does this style in a much more interesting way and with much better production. But of course, that's just my opinion.

I don't disagree on either account; I also think this is overrated and that it was improved upon in almost every regard with Devastation, whose melody, technicality, flow, and variation surpasses the album in question. I'm unfortunately pretty sure it's safe to say they won't ever achieve these heights again...

Sadly, you're probably right. It's the only album from them I can listen from start to finish without skipping tracks.
