More than any other release in recent times, Morbid Angel's Illud Divinum Insanus has polarized our staff members. As anyone familiar with these Floridian death metal forefathers knows, they just came back from a long 8 year absence with a new album that also features their original vocalist, David Vincent, for the first time in 16 years. Due to the notability of this release, we decided to create a collaborative review, which gives all of the staff members to voice their opinions. Here they are, ranging from most negative to quite positive.

So you thought you'd heard the pinnacle of experimental metal? Think again buster, Morbid Angel are here to please their fanbase with everything they could have ever wanted: rip-roaring hardcore snarls, air-punching electro-beatz, brutal, technical Rammstein-worship and truly forward-thinking lyrical content such as the never before contemplated "KILL A COP COP, KILL A COP, KILL-A-KILL-A-COP!" all of which will have you grabbing your glowsticks, squeezing into your favourite UV neon-latex vest and before you know it you'll be throwing shapes down your local Goth-pit, big-fish, little-fish, cardboard box style. Yeah, Morbid Angel know what they're doing and are making metal sexier than ever before.

The Berzerker?

Hm... they even have a morbid angel cover Do you like them?

For sure!!

The Berzerker was awesome! ...but disbanded around 2010.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dqjt-0N-1rs

I will check them later. Now I will check some Katatonia

Wait! You gave this album an 10???

fanboy

actually i do really like it, other than "too extreme!" which would have been better placed later in the album. not track 2 after the intro. just swap it in the track order with Nevermore and i think everyone would like the album a lot better.

Well, I kinda of agree with you. This track is in the wrong place. For me, it's the weakest track of the album... from what I can remember. I'm not even sure if I listened to it 100 percent

It was obvious that Pete Sandoval has changed his beater (drum stick) to a midium-headed type. 2-3 songs sound like industrial. Extremely good tempos like his early works.

Pete Sandoval doesn't play on the album, it's Tim Yeung.

There's actually been a few stories circulating around the net recently, that Pete has actually left the band permanently. He is still listed as the drummer on Morbid Angel's official website though, and as far as I know, there has been no official statement made by the band about Pete's supposed departure.

If it wasn't MA, there wouldn't have been so much controversy. Some tracks are actually enjoyable even if the worst ones always get the attention (radikult, too extreme.....). A mixed album that ends up being quite mediocre.

Sums it up right there. It's not as horrible as everyone makes it out to be, but it's not above average. People probably give it such a low rating out of sheer disappointment, which I suppose I can understand. I'd rate it a 5.7 at max, or at the lowest a 4.

The album had a very low level ..... .
The morbid angel fans (of which I am one of them) "in their minds of this group relative to the group's albums and videos that have been decades ago," I did not expect to like this.!
"Pete" did not appear on the album itself is a negative score and may indicate that "Pete" also believes that the new album should be out .... .

3 people voted 10!
WTF is wrong with them.
worst album i've ever heard.

Closed-minded prick.

How do you figure? I agree with this person, it's not just Morbid Angel's worst, but it's straight up horrible, though I believe they were probably trolling while voting 10. It's a shitty album, age has obviously got to David Vincent and to my knowledge, Pete Sandoval is not on this record, right? They had a good run, but this was a huge disappointment, thinking it sucks doesn't make one close-minded.

If this wasn't Morbid Angel, I admit I wouldn't have rated it this low.
However, it *is* Morbid Angel, and despite my best efforts, I cannot erase the quality of their other albums from my mind.
If this album was by a completely unknown band, I might give it a 6
If this album was by a completely unknown band, I also never would've purchased it

I guess I'm already aware I'm in the minority, but I have to make an attempt to defend this album.
I find this album to be very fun, yeah it's not top quality industrial metal, it's not top quality death metal, and it's possibly not top quality morbid angel (I don't know morbid angel that well) but I do know that when I listen to it I have a good time. It's just such silly, ridiculous and fun, that I find myself returning to it regularly.
Take this opinion as you find it, I also like to listen to St Anger for fun, and prefer the original to the snare corrected versions you can find on youtube (that's a topic for another chat, and maybe I have a teenage nostalgia for it, but I still find it fun to listen to)
