For a debut this is absolutely marvellous. I'll even go as far as to say that it may be one of the band's best, though its sludgy and raw production could prove otherwise some people's opinions. Let's face it though, the longer songs such as 'Elephant Man' and 'Trainwreck' still eschewed the band's talents remarkably well.

It is their best imo everything is almost perfect and there's a lot of variation, it does not sound like a debut at all

I just think this album is so underrated. No mastodon album is necessarily that bad, (maybe a couple that are slightly weak), but 'Remission' is an example of band quickly and maturedly finding their stance in the metal world.

This is in my top 5 mastodon albums, and always will be, up until the next release, at which time it will undoubtedly be in my top 6 mastodon albums ^^. Fanboyism aside and as already mentioned, amazingly mature yet bone-crushingly enjoyable debut album. Perhaps less of a focused assault as the three albums following, the album married shattering heavy passages with satisfying melodic elements beautifully, foreshadowing what these guys had coming out of their music-holes in the years to come. Brann Dailor? Phwoar.
P.S. Mother Puncher.

Did you just say "eschewed the band's talents remarkably well."?
Eschew
verb
to abstain or keep away from; shun; avoid: to eschew evil.
Are you trying to tell us all that 'Elephant Man' and 'Trainwreck' abandoned the bands talents remarkably well? Because that doesn't really make any sense.

They still don't give a fuck. If they did they'd still be trying to please fans of their back catalog but instead they're doing whatever they want.

Why doesn't this have a higher average rating? This is at least their second-best album next to Leviathan, if not just as good. Even Blood Mountain and the Hunter have higher ratings than this, and I didn't think that either of those albums were really fantastic.
The production of this album is also absolutely perfect... it sounds gritty, rough, aggressive, and very real. While I like some of Leviathan's songwriting better, the production was a little bit better on this debut album here.

Because not everyone likes the gritty production. I vastly prefer Mastodon's latter albums, less awesome riffs, but I find the textures to be much more interesting.

Really good debut album. Certainly their heaviest album. It is very consistently good, though lacks the peaks of some of their later records. I particularly like March Of The Fire Ants, Trilobite, Elephant Man and Workhorse. It drags slightly around Ol'e Nessie. Really love the intensity of the album. I would say it is their third best record.

This is their 2nd best album imo just behind Leviathan, and not only is this their heaviest but one of the heaviest albums of all time. "March Of The Fire Ants" is also my all-time favorite Mastodon song just ahead of "Hearts Alive".

Now that is someone who knows his Mastodon! I only disagree with Hearts Alive hahaha. Great song, but so many better ones on both albums.
