I know, Strength of Fates scared the sh*t outta me the first time I heard it. And the second. Haven't gotten around to 3rd spin yet, this is an album you listen to occasionally.

Is this a good place to start with Neurosis? thinking getting into them but I cant decide on an album.

I remember I asked this in their band thread and I got a response which I agree with now that I know most of their discography.

Given To The Rising would be the best choice overall because it contains pretty much everything Neurosis is known for: It has agression, intense moments, calm sections... It's really varied and therefore shows pretty much the whole package. The other albums like Times Of Grace are very intese and on the other hand albums like The Eye Of Every Storm are very calm most of the time
So yeah.... Given To The Rising would be the best start, if Given To The Rising didn't exist, I would say that you could start with Through Silver In Blood as it is also very representative but I would say a little bit less accessible.

Tl;dr answer: Go for Given To The Rising and if you aren't too sure about it when you are done with it... Give it a try with Through Silver In Blood because that album should not be missed under any circustances.
IMO pretty much their entire discography is worth checking out. But TSIB..... damn... Easily top 5 of the 90's for me and pretty much one of the pinnacles of Post-Metal. One of my nine albums I gave the max rating.

That's the thing with Neurosis, Looking around I cant find many people with a bad thing to say about their albums which obviously makes it hard to choose one, I'm trying to get more into Sludge/Post Rock etc. and I kept hearing this bands name pop up so I figured id start with them.

Aye, that happens a lot among the fans, can't really decide on a good album to start not only because of the quality but also because besides from being consistent, they always change a little bit with every album. GTTR and TSIB are the only ones that try to show all the things the band has to offer. I'm quite sure the most popular opinion is that TSIB is their best one but usually by a hair from the rest.

Glad you liked them! If you enjoyed TSIB I'm sure you'll enjoy pretty much anything from Souls At Zero to present (they were hardcore punk before, still good but yoyu might want to be cautious).

And just for being a fanboy....

After 27 years(!) of kicking around, they are still as intense as ever. What I like about that song is that it works perfectly as both opener and closer. Because both the intro and outro are massive.



Compare it with this old one back in 95. Okay they had a bit more energy but they haven't changed that much

Cool stuff, Ill probably pick up a couple more records soon, and I like Hardcore punk so its all good.

I know what you mean with that song, Its almost like a Neurosis "anthem" and perfect for a live setting.

I agree; I saw them last summer and "Through Silver In Blood" was the final song (thankfully there was no encore; I just find it stupid)... And it simply burned the city to the ground.

Needless to say that this album is their most successful and consistent, easily one of the best of the last 20 years. If I had to choose another Neurosis album I really cherish, that'd be "The Eye Of Every Storm", much calmer yet absolutely dreary...

The last song, "I can see you" is some of the most intense moments of the band for me. There's a piercing desperation hidden in the beginning that grasp you by the throat later.

"In the oceans we can find you
For the sun we praise your name
In the dirt we pray for god to bring you back again... To bring you back again".

This is such a killing album. I'd put my hands on fire to claim this as one of the heaviest albums ever written.

After giving this album a tonne of spins I have to say this album is indeed excellent I should have listened to this band earlier.

I don't think I've ever listened to this album without ramen.

This album has no faults or flaws.

Massive album, should definitely go through their discography

The entire album is fraught with dense emotions; harrowing, enraged, and disturbed. This is an album to be appreciated in its entirety with no other distractions. I found that some passages overstayed their welcome, making me anxious to hear the next rather than revel in the emotion they sought to create at that instant

It's when I get round to revisiting an album that didn't work for me a while ago such as this and finding how much I enjoy it now that I wonder what other music from the past I've written off that might actually appeal to me in the future. The title track is obviously immense, but Purify, Locust Star, Aeon, there's some really good stuff here. Another listen or two and this could overtake Souls At Zero as my top Neurosis album I imagine

^Never going to happen. Sludge is not respected by continental Europeans. If any sludge album were to show up on the chart (minus the really melodic stuff like Mastodon's Crack the Skye or anything by Isis.) if would get down voted pretty hard. There are a bunch of sludge metal masterworks absent from the list compared to a bunch of relatively mediocre death doom and gothic stuff.

Of course there is going to be a few people who break the trend. But tell me honestly, how many metal-heads do you know in your country who are big sludge fans outside of your circle of friends?

Don't know about other European countries but sludge, post-metal, post-hardcore, etc. are probably the biggest extreme music genres in Belgium at the moment.

There is this band called Cult Of Luna but I'm not sure most people know about them. Pretty underground Swedish post-metal. They certainly don't get a huge crowd. :

The whole Church Of Ra thing flew over dude's head haha.

Just recently got into this band, and gotta say this album is an absolute masterpiece of pure apocalyptic proportion! I have never heard anything that sounds like this band until i started listening to them. This album definitely deserves to be in top 200.

25 years after its release and 24 years after I discovered the band via the first Ozzfest live album (of all things), this is still my favourite Neurosis record and among the heaviest shit ever. That riff inversion right in the middle of the title track is so nasty it makes my teeth fall out every time (yes, I have false teeth because of this album).

This needs to be in the top 200
