The Epigenesis marks the first we've heard from the Sultans of Sumerian Sonic Slaughter since Emissaries was released four years ago. The band continues pretty much where they left off, playing what is basically at it's core midpaced melodic black metal.

Melodic black metal. Ho-hum. Don't we see enough of this?

The masters of modern Mesopotamian melodic black are back. Epigensis sees Melechesh continuing to put their stamp on melodic bm by incorporating all sorts of exotic scales and instrumentation foreign to many western ears. All the exotic is piled on to a solid foundation of pounding drums, sneering vocals and ripping riffs to create an album that definitely stands apart from and above the crowd.

Sounds like blackened Orphaned Land. Not bad news, but I did prefer the addictive riffs and blast beats of Emissaries.

I fucking love this album... how does this not have a higher average rating? Worthy of, at the very least, an 8.5 average. It's at least on par with Emissaries, if not better. Basically just a perfect album (at least, for my tastes) all the way through.

But I suppose if many of the complaints are about song length, that would make sense, 'cause I love long songs while others might not enjoy that.

Riffs seem less memorable and songs drag. I'm a noob to the band but not to the style. Emissaries and Enki both overpower this by a long ways.
