Damn, this one is even more underwhelming than VI. Shame. Where has the atmosphere gone?
I haven't checked out VI at all so you can imagine the chock I got from listening to this album since V was the last stuff I ever heard from Shining.
Really dissapointing, It sounds fake.

It seems like this is getting VERY mixed reviews. Sounds like one I must listen to.

Indeed. Some hate it, some love it - fans and newcomers alike. Gotta love differing tastes.

As the first Shining album that I have heard, I must say I definitely like this band and look forward to hearing their previous work. Now if only I could understand Swedish !!

Shining haven't had atmosphere since III if you ask me.
come on... V has the best athmospheres.

I could stretch to IV but V was the start of a major downfall where this band, and my tastes, are concerned.

The proof that tastes are so different: V is the beginning of the best part of Shining. I agree BM fans got disapointed. I'm also a prog/jazz/avantgarde fan so it was a nice surprise. I listen to a lot of BM though

Has drastically lost points, for me. Initially I gave it something like a 9 or a 10, then 7-8; now I find it a bit fake, at times even awkward, and overall too polished and inexpressive. I usually change my mind about an album after one year or more since the first listens, but this one has aged miserably after just a handful of months. Pity.

Admittedly my score dropped as well - from a high 8 to a low 8 so it wasn't really drastic, but it's just that as more and more albums were released it didn't stand up to them. I still like the album for all it is, but this year just has a few more releases that push it further down the charts.

I have to say this is the best Opeth release of the year.

I'm not getting the mixed response here, I think this is some excellent stuff. I love the Opeth-esque acoustic breaks with the clean vocals, and the riffs are absolutely killer. The Nordman singer's parts on Tillsammans Är Vi Allt are awesome, and I love the solo piano song. Kvarforth may be somewhat of an asshat, but I have to admit, he's a genius metal songwriter

My first taster of Shining. I quite like the album but it flags terribly at times, leading me to believe that the man can do much better. The first track is a definite standout, though.

You should listen to their entire catalog. But III - V is their optimum release period.
Agreed on the first track, too. I really enjoyed this album but I would have loved it even more had the rest of the album lived up to the opener.

You have my word that if all the songs were of the quality of the first one... I would have given this album at least a low 8. I really REALLY like that song which stops me from actually hating this album. Even the clean vocals from the first track weren't used again (or if they did use them... They totally lack the punch).
Like Troy said: III, IV and V... their best albums imo.

Heh, if V was the beginning of the best part of Shining... it was a short ride indeed. I love V but all of a sudden Shining sucked after that album. The fair amount of taste I have for prog/jazz/avantgarde didn't help at all with this album as I didn't see so many elements of those... Maybe some prog and jazz but definitely nothing avantgarde here to these ears.

Man, this album grew on my these last couple of weeks. I always loved the first track but disliked the rest. I don’t know what clicked. Maybe I got used to the different vocals used here and the more commercial-sounding riffs. Good stuff anyway. Still one of their lesser albums but far from being awful as I originally felt.
