If I were to ask you what makes a great Metal band, the answer should be pretty much the same across the board: great albums. In truth, a series of great albums that follow the same structure yet manage to be different enough to be individual works while being similar enough to create a unique trademark sound. Do you see now how fine of a margin bands have to operate? Finland's Insomnium have established themselves as a juggernaut of Gothenburg Metal with a trilogy of sublime releases 2002's In The Halls Of Awaiting, 2004's Since The Day It All Came Down & 2006's Above The Weeping World. Then they managed to cleverly modernize their sound with 2009's Across The Dark. With a growing fan base and so many solid works behind them, their new release One For Sorrow has been one of the most anticipated albums of the year, and for good reasons.

One For Sorrow: the old children's nursery rhyme about counting up to ten birds in a tree. Makes sense for an Insomnium album to be inspired by it; after all, they've had these birds flying around in their album art for a while. Their fifth full-length respectively adapts to the rhyme with ten tracks of fairly varied Gothenburg metal in that trademark Insomnium sound.

Why can't we rate it when a sound preview was already available?
Awesome as expected.

The rating option only pops up on the release stated at the top. Not long to go now ;]

I want to give it a nice 9. It deserves one. Another graceful and sombre effort by our Finns.
Edit: I got the honor of the first vote :3

One situation where I wish I didn't hear 2 tracks prior to the entire album. It's blending though.

Their best since "Since the Day It All Came Down". While all of their albums are above-average melodeath, this one boasts the consistency that has eluded them since "StD...", imo.

Awesomely good score waiting for the vote abusers and the grumbly haters to come and give us a piece of their mind... But this album easily blows New World Shadows out of the water, we have a MS awards melodeath winner here.

This might end up a very close call in my personal opinion. The album is growing on me ATM because album sound quality absolutely tears those webstreams apart! You just don't blow an album like NWS out of the water in my books though

It's more of a clash-of-the-titans-feel for you guys I guess... but for me, this is superior.

I dont like it... they sound the same on the last 3 albums, it always the same songs, i mean same song-writing... i dont like that, becouse this band has more potential... it's good album, good songs, but they allways sound the same, like I'm listening the same song over and over agian

I think NWS is far better

If you mean similar ideas within one album, I agree to some extent. One of my problems with this album is that Friman, who composed 8 out of 10 songs all by himself, ran out of truly good ideas at halfway of his writing process. For example the title track might have seemed like a nice change at first because of it's different style but that effect has worn out quickly.

To a certain extent I agree with you. I love this album, but overall I still find NWS to be a more interesting listen. The album is beastly varied for a modern mdm release (NWS). Insomnium are easily one of the best modern mdm bands and their sound is inferior to none in that category, but imo NWS is still a better listening experience from beginning to end. I dunno, it's gonna be a close call for mdm this year. Both are amazing albums in their own right.

If you like this you'll probably be mightily impressed with the back catalog. One of the few melodeath bands I still pay attention to.

I'm finding it really difficult to find any faults in this thing, if this is on par with their previous releases I'll definitely have to give them a listen.

I'd actually consider this to be one of their weakest overall, although I still really enjoy it. I just think what they've done before this is that good.

In that case it sounds like I hit the jackpot!

Also I find it interesting that this one seems to be exempt from the 'obligatory' 1 votes. Either the abusers are asleep or they woke up to themselves.

Give it 24 hours. You'd be surprised how far some albums drop in the charts.

and if it drops below The Great Mass it shows that even metal has a herd mentality.

even metal has a herd mentality.

You don't think it does? If you're active in the forums it becomes painfully obvious that metalheads are in no way different from the masses of [insert non-metal genre here] fans.

After all, metalheads are still people; the shepherds on this planet are just sheep in disguise.

Good point.

That being said, fuck the votes and just enjoy the music. If people wanna dole out 1s and 10s because the album charts hurt their feelings, you'd only be stooping to that level of weakness by caring about their voting patterns.
