Some people righteously claim that this is not a real Metallica release and thus it can't be viewed as such. I agree. Metallica decided to co-operate with Lou Reed in his interpretation of Alban Berg's opera based on Frank Wedekind's plays "Erdgeist" and "Die Büchse der Pandora". The history behind that opera is as complicated and dramatic as one can imagine, assuming what a dark story it tells.

Lulu brings back Metallica in a collaboration album with Lou Reed. A German visionary named Frank Wedekind wrote a collection of plays about a woman called Lulu who was both a muse and a mystery, the first form of woman. Most of the songs have death, sexuality, love and spite themes. Although it's not a Metallica album, the expectation was off the charts but the result is terrible.

The worst thing you can possibly do is treat this like a Metallica album. It is not. Lulu is a Lou Reed album that just so happens to feature the guys from Metallica as his backing band. Of course, Metallica still had to go and put their name on it, which recklessly raised people's expectations, and the heavy criticism weighed at this album is largely true no matter how you spin it. Nonetheless, while this was a disappointment, it is not totally devoid of merit, and more of an interesting experiment than a Son-of-St. Anger-sized failure.

50 bucks says even if Cliff survived Metallica wouldn't be any different to this day.

And if he tried to steer them clear of their style in the '90s, they would have canned him and went there anyway.

This is quite possibly the worst Metal/Rock album I've ever heard. Though I've only listened to it once. I will listen to it twice or thrice more to see if it grows with time, but I highly doubt it.

This album sucks.. I hope Metallica's real album is at least better than this horrible cd. Lou Reed just doesn't combine with the instrumental, just doesn´t make sense. The lyrics are horrible, Hetfield tries to make a good performance but him a Lou Reed don't fit together. The album is confusing and lacks direction.
Is supposed to be what? Heavy Metal album?..Rock?...Hard Rock??

Seriously folks, it's not the worst album ever. Have you guys heard anything by Zarach Baal Tharagh? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=54dgYEXZOzA&feature=related Yeah, a lot worse than Lulu for sure. Lulu may be ridiculously repetitive, but at least what it's repeating is decent riffs. The old man rambling though... Big mistake.

Just to see that this is NOT a Metallica album, is more a Lou Reed album than a Metallica album, but even with that is another fail in their career.

Totally agreed. It's not a real Metallica album, so I don't judge it as such. However, it was a very misguided decision to do this project, and is probably the biggest blackspot in their career so far. Which is such a shame when they were starting to get back on track with "Death Magnetic".

Their next proper album will have to be really great to erase the bad taste left by this horrible collaboration though.

At least whatever they release after this will be praised by fans worldwide since even St. Anger looks like a masterpiece in comparison.

You're implying that all metaphors are good. I am the table(t) is incredibly stupid no matter how you look at it.

I will be able to look at their next album in a very objective way, seeing as "Lulu" itself will have no bearing whatsoever on how I view it. I don't view "St. Anger" any differently now because of "Lulu" than I always did. But then again, to me it's not a Metallica album, so I do not compare it to their other albums. I will more compare the next album to "Death Magnetic", and hope that it's better and builds on the promise shown by that album. I will agree though that many fans will compare their next album to "Lulu", and therefore it is almost certain to get unwavering praise due to that.
