Max Cavalera never seems to disappoint. He could actually be the most reliable metal musician out there - in his long (almost two decades) career, he has never really made an album that anyone could call bad or even mediocre. Actually, pretty much everything he ever did is quite good, to say the least. It therefore comes as no surprise that Soulfy's latest album "Prophecy" follows this trend. Its a generally enjoyable and solid record, filled with powerful and occasionally brilliant songs.

Well it starts off predictably enough, with chugging riffs and max cavalera's voice, and it proves to be slightly repetitive and boring, but then the second half of the album gives way to much more variety and use of brazilian instruments, and even a femal voice or two. I knocked two points off for the whole album being a bit too long for my liking, but towards the end it really does move. A vast improvement on the few preceding albums, and an interesting prelude to 'Dark Ages', arguably one of the band's finer albums.

I bought this one when I was 14 and it's been ages since I don't give it a listen. It's playing right now and I remembered how awesome it was, and now I can enjoy the Brazilian/oriental music sections that turned me off a bit back then. Any other album from Soulfly worth checking? I see Dark Ages has a good rating...

I was around the same age as well when I heard this - Dark Ages isn't too bad, self-titled is definitely worth it (well, it was back then); but I'm sure you've already listened to it.

Otherwise there's always Sepultura....

No, I've only heard this one. I'm looking for another record that is not straight groove metal with the nu approach and has some other influences, like Prophecy, and I guess the debut is really straightforward metal, isn't it? As you said, I already have Sepultura for that.

The influences are in the debut, but a little different compared to prophecy.
If you enjoyed Soulfly's sound in the Prophecy album, then there is a good chance you will enjoy this album as well.

Decent album and all, and I kinda enjoy Living Sacrifice, but fuck me, is that song repetitive or what?

[two lines of verse]

It's the living, it's the living, it's the living sacrifice
It's the living, it's the living, it's the living sacrifice
It's the living, it's the living, it's the living sacrifice
It's the living, it's the living, it's the living sacrifice

[another two-line verse]

It's the living, it's the living, it's the living sacrifice
It's the living, it's the living, it's the living sacrifice
It's the living, it's the living, it's the living sacrifice
It's the living, it's the living, it's the living sacrifice

[etc.]

Would it have killed them two make the verses longer and the chorus shorter? You'll hear "it's a living" twelve fucking times per chorus! Not that it's a bad song, but it overstays its welcome (despite not really being too long) due to this and makes me wish Max had put a tiny bit more effort into this. A few extra lyrics here and there go a long way when it comes to making songs catchy.

That is not dead which can eternal lie,
And with strange aeons even death may die.
