In Flames.. In Flames.. Chew a little on that name, taste it, swirl it around. What comes to your mind? Some have their mind set back in time, where the band was one of the big bands in the melodic death metal scene with highly acclaimed albums like Whoracle, Colony and Clayman. Others have accepted (or are bitter over) the new sound the band slowly, but surely adopted. And Siren Charms is not an exception.

As someone who enjoyed old school In Flames and even a bit of new school In Flames (I liked A Sense Of Purpose). This is a massive turd in almost every sense of the word.

sorry but I will never understand how someone can enjoy A Sense Of Purpose... I enjoy Sounds Of A Playground Fading tho, except for the unbearable last track.

This album surprised me after Sounds of the Playground Fading. I don't hate it, because the more I listen to it the more it grows on me. I would like to see them go back to a Jester Race type album, unfortunately they are going to write what they want. For those who have written off In Flames well that's on you. Everyone seems to complain about bands changing and that is ridiculous to think a band should never alter and evolve their sound. No matter what I will continue to listen to In Flames and see them live as much as possible. Going back to the album, its good for what it is nothing earth shattering but good.

I always try to give an album at least three listens. Not this time, I seriously doubt there could be anything more gained from going through it again. It's just sad what has become of In Flames.

I have been listening to In Flames for 8 years now. They have been and still are my favorite band. I look forward to every album they have released because there is always something different, they are a band maturing not a band in decline like most people seem to think. They are aging, stored in an oaken cask aging like a fine whisky. Gone is the samey feel you get from their early albums. Each and every song on this album has something different.

To begin with I must admit i was as skeptical as most, when i heard Rusted Nail and Through Oblivion, I did think... This is a big change, i'm not exactly sure it's still In Flames, but as and when more tracks became available and it leaked I was one of the ones to sample the full album before the official release, and I LOVED IT, so since release day I have been actively looking to buy the album and finally I have it! I don't regret it, it's probably my best purchase in recent years of an album because it's so hard to come by good music here that isn't under the subgenre of metalcore or a bunch "metalheads" who think mashing out breakdowns and making half arsed growls down a mic constitutes as decent metal music. There are a few exceptions to this, of which i will not go into here.

All I am going to say is In my opinion. This is in Flames' best album since Come Clarity.

I agree with your sentiments here David. In Flames, to me, are kind of like nomads - they never stay in the same place for too long and, really, this can be found throughout their entire discography arguably from The Jester Race onward. The band has progressed from album-to-album and I think it's audible each and every time. I will note, however, that the progressions are never drastic and jarring though - they are smooth and subtle, always with a hint of the past present along with whatever the new path is they've chosen to wander upon. I remember when Reroute To Remain (yes, I am a long-time fan myself, haha) came out I thought it was silly that so many people were crying "sellout!" when the album didn't really sound that far off from Clayman. Anyway, Siren Charms is a good album and I am happy with it!

The most amazing thing about this record (and this band) is it still sparks the "old IF vs new IF" argument.

Of course it will. The 'old vs new' argument still happens with Nightwish, Opeth and any other band that has gone through drastic changes.

the way i see it is if the fans actually complain about the new sound there's something wrong with that sound. I can't speak for Nightwish, but on Opeth, i have the impression that Akerfeldt wants to sate his fetish for prog rock than trying to make music that worths a damn.

To see this album get a bunch of 1s an 2s irritates me, because while some of you may actually think it's not better than a 1 or 2, most of you are just hating on this because they've gone from being a melodic death metal band, which this forum loves, to a not-so-death alternative metal band. We have to accept that In Flames has changed. This album has some bad, some very cool and some seriously epic songs. I'd give this album an 8, or even a 9, because the songs are great, but since Anders fucks some of the vocals up pretty bad I'll give it a 7.

This is a great album, an interesting album, a solid 7.

In Flames hasn't been a melodeath band for over a decade, at this point it doesn't make sense to compare them that way.

The album is pretty bad though. It's less shit if you don't think of it as an In Flames album but as a cheesy alt rock album, but even then it has some serious issues. It feels as if the band has absolutely no idea what they want to do. It goes from uninspired alt rock songs that lack any real catchiness to poor imitations of Come Clarity style metalcore, with no smooth transition in between. The entire thing feels uninspired and rushed, like they were forced to get an album out. It doesn't appeal to any audience. No matter what direction their next album takes, it will definitely be better than this. When The World Explodes is the only real highlight, because at least it's interesting.

I think it's time they break-up and quit or get back to their original roots.

If they keep making such (in my opinion) lousy crap music this will be indefinitely the last album that I've bought.
I still liked "Reroute to Remain" a bit, but it went just downhill from there.
The other albums such as Soundtrack to Your Escape, Come Clarity, A Sense of Purpose & Sounds of a Playground Fading...
I just bought them because it has their name on it, just like this one.

Wasn't surprised that 90% of the album was incredibly bland, with "Dead Eyes" being particularly bad. That said, the infrequent highlights of the album are actually pretty decent. "Everything's Gone" was a really enjoyable and "Paralyzed" had a catchy chorus. Not an album I would listen to twice.

When recording this album, im sure they just went to the studio and said "I fart in your general direction" to the fans.
If it was "any other generic band" it would even be passable, but this is IN FLAMES?!? sorry, this album is just bad. I have no problems with changes and experimentation (for example i love helloween "Pink Bubbles Go Ape"), my problem is the change in quality (in this case the lack of) - they should be able to do much better then this, as they should have enough talent and experience by now (or had one day)
