Last time Slipknot released a studio album, they still served as one of my primary conduits to the metal scene. As I am no longer 14, Slipknot's angst-and-unorthodox-percussion-heavy brand of nu/alt metal lacks the same gravitas it once had, but I still enjoy Vol 3: The Subliminal Verses and Slipknot from time to time. You might call me a bit of a lapsed fan, but I'm enough of one to give .5: The Gray Chapter a fighting chance.

Let me preface this saying that I am a fan. Slipknot was the first metal album I listened to all the way through. I owe much of my progression into metal music to them, and I still listen to Slipknot and Iowa regularly.

The album opens with an interesting synth intro. It is very atmospheric. I'm immediately worried as I begin thinking about The Subliminal Verses instead of the throwbacks I had been told that this hearkened to. Corey comes in alone and raw. I have mixed feelings at first about his approach, but it grows on me and sucks me in. Unfortunately this is about as personal as Corey will sound for the remainder of the album. I once again realize that never again will we have another "742617000027" or "(515)".

Finally got around listening to it.
I was pleasantly surprised. It's almost as if this shitty fourth album whose name I can't remember just never existed.
Sure, it's not on par with the first two, but it's a nice follow-up to The Subliminal Verses.

Great follow up to the Subliminal Verses ! I never was a fan of Slipknot and don't care about what kind of music they play or how they like to disguise, all I know is that this album is f*cking enjoyable, so I love it

Not a bad album, much better than I expected, the guitarwork is pretty good, there's plenty of groove aswel, and with a slight 90's grunge vibe to it. It's not as heavy or fast as their previous attempts though, but still impressive. "Killpop" is my favourite track on the album, I also like "Sarcastrophe", "Skeptic" and "The One That Kills The Least". The other tracks are not quite as good imo. Overall it's one of their most consistent albums, and I'm certainly ok with it.

This album has some masterclass thrash/death riffs, like AOV, SARCATASTROPHE, NORDIC, and LECH. There is also a top-notch 90's grunge vocal melody line essence and of course the classic punk/chaotic rhythm section in lesser quantity. Songs like Kill Pop with the experimental ABBAesque kind of verse is a token of musicianship. If Rain is what you want is a hidden Gem alongside Goodbye. This is just excellent for those who listen to music with their ears and their heart. For those who listen to music using only their neck, they can stick to the first two albums(excellent albums but.....)

This album is good. But it reeks of missed potential. If it could have been as good as its peaks, we're talking about an album that could potentially be better than Slipknot. "XIX" and Sarcastrophe" are so damn amazing, the former's haunting sound giving way to the latter's cacophony of chaos. But after the classic that is "The Devil in I" the album just becomes forgettable. Yet then in rockets into life again with the hype factory that is "Custer" and the brutality of "The Negative One", but then the album just becomes mediocre again.
