Only listened to one song from this, but I listened to the previous album and It's just your average solo instrumental shred metal project. Not bad, but nothing particularly exciting. It's been done a million times. For all its technical glory it's quite a tedious listen as is the case with so many of these types of albums (Jeff Loomis, Paul Gilbert, Christian Münzner, etc, with their boring solo stuff.) Nice for one or two songs perhaps, as background music to playing a video game or something, but not in any way a wet dream.
Solos are nice but, to quote Redlettermedia: "like anything that's cool, when it's used too much it becomes boring. Except for cocaine."

I still recommend giving this one a shot. There are some added instruments including a sax solo and a solo from one of the dudes from Bloodshot Dawn. I usually find this style tedious as well, but Mendel has a good handle on progression that keeps me constantly engaged.

I'm just shocked that you see this as equivalent to the numerous instrumental solo records out there. To me, it sounds more like a prog record with the vocals replaced with a solo or two...not 100

I must concur with Zaphod on this one. Mendel is no better at progression that any of the other artists who specialize in prog metal with lots of shredding. The problem is that the record is boring and not that there are too many solos (because quite frankly there aren't THAT many solos). The saxophone solo on Horizon is not simply a cheap add-on, which is nice, but the songs have otherwise been heard before. I've heard only three songs on this one, but it's enough to rate.
