4 decades of crushing pain. 4 decades of blood-curdling violence. 4 decades of unrelenting anger. 4 decades of FILTH.

Swans' explosive debut album remains as vicious and uncompromising as it was back in 1983. A milestone within the annals of heavy music. It went on to influence plenty of bands within the industrial, noise rock, and metal scenes. But few acts can hope to ever reach this level of mad intensity. From the bludgeoning and creative percussion to the colossal bass. From the piercing guitars to the misanthropic and unstable vocals. Filth was specifically designed to harm the listener. After all this time, it keeps on delivering.

My favorite album of Swans by miles. I honestly think that Soundtracks For The Blind is really overrated, and To Be Kind was just ehh for me.

My favorite album of Swans by miles.

If you have the opportunity of getting the 3CD version, do it. Plenty of amazing material from the same era including a 24 min live set on the first CD, the compilation Body to Body, Job to Job on the second CD and the first self-titled EP along with 40 mins of live material on the third CD. It was one of the best purchases I made in a while.

I gave this and Cop a spin last night and it's pretty amazing how even now, 30 + years later, there's still really not much else out there that can easily compete with this in the "agonizing, painful listening" department. I mean, sure, you can probably find a bunch of bleak sludge, black metal, other extreme stuff out there, but it just doesn't match the vibe set by the plodding, bludgeoning music and that depressing, minimalist take to the lyrics. Now I really get why there's such a fearsome reputation around Public Castration too, and why a lot of people talk about being unable to finish it in full

Haven't listened to it yet. Just saw the cover art. Based on your rating, I guess you'd recommend me listening to it - alright, this'll be next on my checklist!

I listened to a few of the tracks. Unfortunately, I don't get the appeal as of right now. Very grating on the ears, but I guess that's the point. Nja, not my thing.

You'd probably like their later stuff, then. Their early stuff is heavy industrial/noise, but their later stuff from The Burning World on is massive monolithic but moving post-rock/industrial. I love this album, but The Seer and To Be Kind are close seconds.
