IIRC Mike explained why this album turned out so bad. It's a combination of the fact the lyrics were written before the instruments (resulting in stripped down instrumentation), and the production, which toned down the rock elements and made it sound more like generic pop. The songs sound much better live, though they still aren't their best by any means.
