It's there even such a thing as pretentious thrash? It's like the most meat and potatoes subgenre,
Vektor could fit into that description, no?
Not really since they are more or less ripping off Voi Vod.
Pretentiously ripping off Voivod.

Is this as boring as "Transcendence"? I heard the single "Genesis" I believe a while back and it was not bad.

It's a lot more diverse than Transcendence for sure, full of different sounds and styles.
To me it's a piece of everything Devin has done so far in one really well crafted album.

Nah Transcendence is way, way better than this. I love Devy but he tried way too hard on this album and it came out a mess as a result.

This is just awful. I can understand why someone would like this, but it's far too overproduced and corny sounding for me, and NOT in a fun, Rhapsody Of Fire way.

I love Devy as much as the next guy but this one just doesn't do it for me at all. Definitely a blend of old and new, but perhaps I've grown used to his more digestible works like Addicted or Epicloud.

Canadian singer, songwriter producer Devin Townsend has launched the "Quarantine Project" as a way of thanking fans for their support after he was recently forced to postpone the remaining dates on his North American tour. Townsend took a huge financial hit for scrapping the dates after more than a year's work in preparing for the trek.

Takes time to get into it. I started off with 2003's Accelerated Evolution. It's much easier to absorb. Or try his praised Ocean Machine (1997).
Empath is really like a summary of his career output. Possibly the most difficult album for someone new to start with.

I tried some other of his albums, but I just dont get it. Though the problem with this one is the overall production and sense of being over the top with everything

Interesting. With Accelerated Evolution and Ocean Machine, I was hooked up from the beginning.
On the other hand, it took me some time to appreciate Infinity, Terria (lot of ambient passages there), Physicist or Ziltoid and Synchestra.
His 'Project' series albums are even more excentric. Empath is really a culmination of all that.
If you're into heavier stuff, try his (now I believe can already say) legendary extreme metal band Strapping young lad. Especially albums like City and Alien are on the edge of the most extreme stuff out there, even some grind outfits don't match the rage and intensity of those two.
Or - you could use his solo Physicist album, which is like a bridge between his softer although excentric himself and the more extreme Strapping. Easier to get into and more straightforward, might help you get an idea what this guy's music is about.

Easily one of his best albums. Probably the most Devin Townsendish album Devin Townsend ever Down Townsended. I mean everything is here, popish songs, avantgarde one, symphonic one, SYL-ish one, super proggy one, even a little bit of country and ambient, electro, pretty much everything he has done so far. Excellent album, yet it is so hard to compare it to Trascendence (which is a great album on its own) because Empath is a totally different one. It is a crazy beast. His best since Deconstruction in my opinion.
PS: Don't forget to check the brilliant bonus songs.

Weird album for sure. Took me listens upon listens to realise this is a masterpiece. No other album tells a story in such a way. This makes it feel like an amazing journey.
Edit: Gets better with every listen. Easily my favourite of Devin's also one of my favourite albums of all time, I don't give out 10s easily.
