If the purpose of ‘progressive’ music is to progress over time, Rivers Of Nihil are certainly in agreement.

They've smashed it. Owls was unbelievably beautiful and so is this. First listen and I feel that exact same goosebumpy feeling I did 3 and a half years ago...

Simply mesmerising album...
These guys alongside with Black Crown Initiate, Allegaeon and Nailed to Obscurity are ruining a lot of other bands for me. I just can't seem to be able to listen to anything else.

I wasn't expecting this album to live up to 'Where Owls Know My Name,' but I was still hoping this album would be on par with the previous two. It's a completely different sound from before focusing much more on prog aspect then tech, but still a solid album.

First listen was satisfying, with lots that struck me as unexpected but interesting. Can't even begin to put a rating on this yet, but I am not let down by it. This is brave and creative and dark and heavy and soft and beautiful, and at no point was I thinking they were indulging in hipster bullshit, which suggests I'll be exploring this one for a while.

Really disappointing. Loved their first album. Really enjoyed their second album. Didn’t enjoy the trajectory they took on their third. Then there’s this one. The token saxophone. The songs feel completely self indulgent and pretentious.

I guess I have their first two to go back to.

Made of Metal
Was really curious where they were going to take the Winter album. The first 3 had pretty clear main themes with Spring being Fertility/Growth, Summer Thriving/Heat, Fall Death/Change. Finally they've made it to my favorite season and my interpretation of the theme is Dreams/Work. The slower pacing and quiet moments give the album a more cold and lifeless feel which I believe to be completely intentional to better convey the season. That's not to say that there isn't some seriously heavy moments but those moments are more intentionally placed rather than being in your face constantly. So far I'm impressed, it's a fresh and unique take on their sound without straying too far from their roots.

Hightlights: Terrestria IV: Work, MORE?, Void from Which No Sound Escapes, Focus

That part at the end of track 2 where its gets really loud and static for 10 seconds almost blew out my only pair of Bluetooth headphones. I don't think I will listen to it again after that. Other than that it is a good album.

Owls has become one of my favorite albums, and with the release of 'The Work', I am just in love with River of Nihil! What an album this is, maybe not as good as Owls, but still a beautiful record, with menacing yet spacey parts, that just work so well together. Really love it!

Am really enjoying this. Will vote after a few more spins. Can't see any problems with songwriting, just a matter of taste I guess.

I feel like this is a decent follow-up to "Owls". This album is definitely more varied than it's predecessor, but I found that it stayed true to the theme. It works, but it's not a masterpiece.

I wonder what the fuck went through their heads when they did that. It's the first time in my life I feel like editing a track to cut that part, it's really really bad and painful for the ears.

After a few spins I can say I feel very disappointed by this one. Sure there are good moments, but overall it feels totally disconnected to me, I'm lacking smart transitions. I feel like I'm going from a blast to an interlude without a warning, and I'm left wondering "WTF is happening" most of the time.

It probably was a mistake to expect another Owls', but still I'm surprised to see nothing I was expecting in this one at all .. Probably won't be coming back to it anymore, and stick to Owls'.

Also I still don't understand the tiniest bit why people would bring Sax in metal, it sounds completely out of place to me.

But anyway, I try never to criticise music, but I really felt let down here

The song writing of these guys is spectacular. The first half of the album is so much better than the second half. More? is one of my favorites of this album.
