Biography
Name Origin
Proscriptor (Proscript/Proscription) – An outlaw or aggressor who banishes, condemns or denounces; one who proscribes the dead names in a requiem.
McGovern (MacGovern/Mág Samhradháin) – Proscriptor’s surname of Irish/Scottish origin predominantly found in the counties of Cavan, Fermanagh, Glencoe and Leitrim. (Son Of Samhradhán/Son Of A Leader/Son Of Summer)
Apsû (Absû/Apzû/Abzû) – The primeval Sumerian-Akkadian demiurge that personifies the primordial abyss of the mawkish sweet waters underneath the earth and all-begetter of the skies. The "consort" of Tiamat: the primordial abyss of the brackish salt waters of Chaos. When the benthos’ collided, Apsû was held captive in underworld-like immobility.
Prologue
For a band such as Proscriptor McGovern’s Apsû, there is no better introduction than with direct words of the Magic(k)al Path. There is no simple gesture, no mere bow and sweep of the musical hand that can tempt a listener to ancient gnostics. To introduce the aspirant to this work is the innate kinship between the Abyss, for only then will the gate to “mythological occult metal” swing open – only then will the voyage into this in-between-ness be found as an embraced entrance.
History
Proscriptor McGovern’s Apsû is an American “mythological occult metal” band from Dallas, Texas formed in 2020 and the most obvious by-product of the chemical breakdown of Absu. When drummer/vocalist Proscriptor (Russ R. Givens) decided to dissolve ABSU on January 27th 2020, his main intention was to splinter the 30-year old faction into a fixed songwriting concord.
In July of 2020, it was announced that a debut self-titled album would be released under the moniker Proscriptor McGovern’s Apsû, via their new signatory label, Agonia Records. Since Absu’s last album ‘was’ to be penned as Apsu, (Babylonian allusion) he decided to fuse the album title with his name to form the new group. Securing the ranks is continuing bassist/vocalist Ezezu and new guitar extraordinaire Vaggreaz. The new album will be announced in late 2020 with the persisted artwork skills of Zbigniew Bielak.
Epilogue
Absu’s closing has evolved into the euphonic hallucinogen of Proscriptor McGovern’s Apsû, finding place in the mercurial Primum Mobile – never bogged down nor beholden to it. Animated with the same ineffable spirit of “mythological occult metal,” Apsû continues the inquisitive conduction of soundtracks dedicated to the Void and its reflex: the Abyss.
