On the album Brave Murder Day, Mikael Åkerfeldt performs vocals on all of the songs except for track 3, "Day".

Katatonia has covered songs by non-metal artists Jeff Buckley (Nightmares by the Sea) and the Will Oldham project Palace Music (O How I Enjoy the Light).

Katatonia (Catatonia) is a psychiatric condition often associated with schizophrenia. It is characterized by a general absence of motor activity or violent, hyperactive behavior.

According to Anders Nyström (Blakkheim), Dan Swanö opposed the band's change in style to a more 'discordant' sound during the recordings of Brave Murder Day. As a result of this he removed himself from the production role and carried on as just the sound engineer.

In their three-song EP, "Sounds Of Decay", the front cover is a screenshot of a decrepit god, taken from the movie "Begotten" by E. Elias Merhige.

"Jhva Elohim Meth" which means "God Is Dead", a quote from Friedrich Nietzsche's "The Gay Science", is the first official release by Katatonia. It was released in July 1992 and was limited to 500 copies of which 300 were blue, 100 transparent and 100 red. The first 30 copies came with photos and lyrics. The demo was later released as an EP with the title "Jhva Elohim Meth... The Revival".

As well as performing vocal duties, Jonas Renkse was also Katatonia's drummer up until 'Discouraged Ones', with Dan Swanö taking over drumming duties on Katatonia's 4th full-length 'Tonight's Decision' previous to Daniel Liljekvist joining the band.
