Soen - New Band Of Ex-Amon Amarth, Ex-Opeth Drummer

Martin Lopez, ex-drummer of Amon Amarth and Opeth, was so kind to inform us he's been working on a new project, entitled Soen. Lopez will be handling the drums duties, and he has formed the band together with bassist Steve DiGiorgio (ex-Death, ex-Testament, ex-Iced Earth, and a shitload of other bands), Kim Platbarzdis on guitar and vocalist Joel Ekelöf.

Lopez described the music as "melodic, heavy, intricated, and very different than everything else." He added: "We are currently writing material, and as soon as we have more news you'll be informed." Which means you'll be informed too. So keep checking the news section regularly for updates.

Atheist - Enter The Studio

After 17 years, the wait is finally over... Atheist are set to enter LedBelly recording studios in Atlanta, GA on July 5th to lay the tracks down on their long-awaited, yet untitled, fourth studio album. Engineering the recording session will be Matt Washburn. Additionally, the band have secured the services of one of metal's most significant talents of the past decade, Jason Suecof (Trivium, Chimaira, Devildriver and many others), to handle the mixing of what promises to be a modern classic from the pioneers of technical metal.

"I can't believe we are about to record this album finally", vocalist Kelly Shaefer states. "We have been working our asses off for a year, and have taken great strides to make this the record we, as fans, would want to hear from Atheist. It's ferocious, intelligent, and dead balls heavy as shit! When people hear this they're going to say, 'It's Atheist!'"

"We are also honored and totally stoked to have Jason be a part of this album with us" says drummer Steve Flynn. "He went to great lengths to make this happen for us, and we are grateful. We anticipate collectively taking extreme metal to new places. Jason has quickly become one of the most sought-after engineers/producers in the industry, and we're excited to be working with him. He truly understands the legacy of the Florida Death Metal scene, and the importance of this record. We're confident that Jason will deliver an absolutely monster production. Additionally, we DO realize that the record has taken a long time to create. However, there are so many twists and turns in the average Atheist song, and we felt like it was very important to have enough killer material written so as to make it the most interesting record we have ever created. We wanted to make sure we took the next logical step in the evolution of our music. According to the critics out there, it's a tall - almost impossible - order. However, we feel like we have done it."

"Our late and great friend and foundational element of the Atheist sound, Roger Patterson, was always with us in spirit in the process of writing" adds Shaefer. "In fact, that frantic, technical Patterson spirit has come shining through once more in the form of Jonathan Thompson, our newest guitar player. "JT" is a young-spirited multi-talented player - he also plays bass for Flynn's band Gnostic. As long-time Atheist fans, JT and Chris Baker understand what Atheist is at its core and what the fans expect. Both have proven to be invaluable in bringing out that classic Atheist sound and have been instrumental the course of writing this long-awaited record."

Isis - Final Release Details

As announced last week with great sadness, Isis are calling it quits. The band's label has now announced the details of the band's latest release, a split CD with Melvins. Here's the official Hydra Head press release:

"The long running and the longer running. The finite and the perpetual. Two of the last studio tracks from a band now in their final days, and two songs from a band who will potentially outlive us all. Isis. The Melvins. If you enjoy music of the heavier variety and haven't heard either of these aural entities you are also probably unaware of other modern developments such as disposable contacts, the internet, and Snuggies.

As mentioned above the two Isis songs featured on this split are amongst the last recorded output to be released by the band, and are (relatively) exclusive to this 12". The first, "Way Through Woven Branches" has previously only been available as a bonus track on the Japanese edition of their most recent full length Wavering Radiant. The second track "Pliable Foe", has never been released anywhere, and believe or not (at the time of this writing anyway), has managed to escape being sucked into the shadowy vortex of illegal internet file sharing. Both tracks were recorded during the sessions of the aforementioned Wavering Radiant album and continue along the trajectory established therein - in other words, long and winding strands of melody wrapped around jagged blocks of shuddering distortion. A fitting close to a continually evolving but coherently developed cannon of recorded works, and appropriately paired with one of their early and admitted influences, that being The Melvins.

The Melvins tracks featured on the flipside of this platter are culled from their latest full length album "The Bride Screamed Murder", albeit in highly altered forms from what appears there and are exclusive to this release. Remixed and reworked by the band themselves along with the help of ever nimble and able engineer and ally Toshi Kasai, these tracks are prime examples of The Melvins persona as we've come to know it - alternately jarring, tuneful, heavy, and bizarre. While the album versions of these tracks may fall further on the side of the "heavy" and "rocking", on display as presented here is the dadaist/trickster tendencies of the band which has frustrated and delighted fans in equal measure since (very nearly) the beginning of their existence. Never content to let the listener settle into a comfortable groove, the will to disrupt and dismay may prove satisfying for some and confounding for others. In any case, if you know and love The Melvins (like we do) these songs will be another must have addition to their ever growing library of aural curios."

Buried Inside - Put On Indefinite Hiatus

Canadian metallers Buried Inside are going on an indefinite hiatus after a career of thirteen year.

Andrew Tweedy, vocalist and guitarist of the band, said the following in an interview with Exclaim!: "We've sort of refrained from calling it a break-up. We're playing a few more shows, which will be our last, and then taking a break with no intention of resuming as of right now. It's less dramatic, I suppose. Life is catching up with us, I guess. It's hard to just take one step back at this point. You're kind of in or you're out... we've been less and less available for shows and tours the last little while, and ultimately the timing seemed right. The idea of continuing on half-hearted is the opposite of what this band has always been about."

The band will do two more shows this week and one final goodbye show in Ottawa somewhere in autumn.

05/27/2010 - Toronto, ON - Sneaky Dee's (with KEN Mode, Titan, Engineer)
05/28/2010 - Montreal, QC - Katacombes (with Titan, Ensorcelor)

Desultory - Finished Recording New Album

Reactivated Swedish Death metallers Desultory have recently completed the work on the upcoming album, which will be entitled Counting Our Scars.

The band recorded, mixed and mastered the effort with Tore Stjerna at Necromorbus Studio (Watain, Unanimated, Deströyer 666, etc) in Alvik, Sweden. Work is also currently underway for the new album's cover artwork and layout, and more announcement on this will be made available soon.

Among some of the song titles to be included (in no particular order) on "Counting Our Scars" are "In A Cage", "Counting Our Scars", "Ready To Bleed", "This Broken Halo", "Uneven Numbers", etc.

The band commented: "What gets inside always stays inside. This music once shaped us and the marks it left will forever keep itching. Desultory never died, it just went down deep below and beneath the surface it slowly kept growing. Throughout the years, there are many of you out there who never stopped waiting, asking the same question over and over. Now when we finally meet again, Counting Our Scars feels like liberation, the bleeding is over. This album is for all of us who never stopped waiting."
