Bone Gnawer - Re-Sign With Pulverised Records

Official press release

Pulverised Records are pleased to announce the re-signing of horror/gore death metallers Bone Gnawer; back to invade and pollute our roster with more impaling Death Metal.

Bone Gnawer is a collaboration between legendary growler Kam Lee (ex-Mantas, ex-Massacre, ex-Denial Fiend), Swedish madman Rogga Johansson (Paganizer, Demiurg, The 11th Hour) and together with Ronnie Bjornstrom (Hate Ammo, Ribspreader, Taedeat) and Morgan Lie of Naglfar fame.

Comments Bone Gnawer frontman Kam Lee on the new album deal and also giving us a sneak-peek into the upcoming album: "Once again those cannibal misfits and morbid horror freaks of Bone Gnawer are back to bring forth their unique blend of horror/gore death metal! And once more we are signing with Pulverised Records. It feels good to be back with Pulverised - because this is the one label that has a real true understanding of the type of old school 90's style of death metal we play.

This time around Bone Gnawer is taking another brave and bold approach to our musical direction and lyrical concepts. We always strive to push of going against the grain and not catering to the "modern trends", all the while staying "true" to the old school death metal sound.

This time around we are taking a slash & stab at the flesh and going for a complete hard revenge - torture & vengeance type lyrical concept. Although some of those 'cannibal themed' type lyrics will remain. We are taking on a more gritty feel and a much more darker edged 'grind-house' appeal to our lyrical concepts.

Taking influences from some of the more hard-core exploitation type films of the late 1970's such as I Spit On Your Grave and Last House On The Left. As well musically we are retaining all the horrific blend of old school death metal we are known for, yet combining it with an even more catchy and groovy flair!!"

The follow-up album to their successful debut Feast of Flesh is currently underway in the midst of recording, and more details will be announced soon.

A brand new song entitled "Scissored" in lower quality is now available for preview on the Bone Gnawer official MySpace page. To hear the high quality version of the song, fans will need to sign up for the Bone Gnawer mailing list on their Facebook page.

Sunn O))) - To Curate Roadburn Festival 2011

Roadburn Festival is thrilled to unveil the curator for the 2011 edition of Roadburn: Sunn O))). The band, to be specific Greg Anderson and Stephen O'Malley, has agreed to curate the festival on Friday, April 15th, 2011 and host a special event.

As curator, Sunn O))) will personally select the bands that will play during their special event as well as perform a headline show. Sunn O))) will be Roadburn's fourth curator, following David Tibet in 2008, Neurosis in 2009 and Triptykon's Tom Gabriel Warrior at this year's festival.

Right now, Greg Anderson and Stephen O'Malley are gearing up for two major Sunn O))) events in September: performing Altar with Boris at ATP New York and Brooklyn's Masonic Temple, but you can expect to hear from them in the future with respect to their thoughts on the 2011 Roadburn festival and Sunn O)))'s performance.

Comments the organization: "We are overjoyed to join forces with Sunn O))) for the upcoming Roadburn festival. Their metal-based drone experimentations have proved groundbreaking and hugely influential for an entire new generation of musicians practicing the art of avant-garde metal, drone, post rock and psychedelica. Sunn O))) is also widely acclaimed for their eclectic collaborations with everyone from musicians Attila Csihar, Masami Akita (Merzbow), Boris, Steven Stapleton, Justin Broadrick, Oren Ambarchi, Ulver, Joe Preston, John Wiese, and Julian Cope to filmmaker Jim Jarmusch and visual artist Banks Violette.

Greg Anderson, who is also Goatsnake's songsmith and the entrepreneur behind Southern Lord Records, and Stephen O'Malley, a prolific improviser and composer who is well-known for being involved in Burning Witch, KHANATE, KTL and DACM/Gisèle Vienne theatre-works, have performed in different guises during various Roadburn festivals over the years, which is exactly why we felt they would be the ideal curators. Both of them consistently push the envelope musically, and one of our steadfast goals has been to make Roadburn a festival that explores the cutting edge while celebrating the familiar, too. With that in mind, we could think of no better spiritual guide for 2011 than Sunn O))).

We are truly looking forward to the new ideas and visions that the crossover drone duo will bring to the festival next year. When asked to sum up Roadburn in one word, "progressive" would be a fitting choice. Evolving and improving are part of this. The festival is a tribute to the open mindedness of its bands, curators and audience. The joy comes from expanding musical horizons, and with Sunn O))) acting as our curator we'll definitely be in for some artistic surprises."

Ignominious Incarceration - Involved In Car Crash, Remaining Tour Dates Canceled

British death metal act Ignominious Incarceration have been forced to cancel their headlining European tour with Detroit deathcore band And Hell Followed With after the bands' tour van crashed.

After a strong start to the tour, a few of the shows in mainland Europe fell through with promoters, so the bands had decided to head back to the UK to continue with the tour there and add some more shows.

Whilst driving through France on their way back to Calais, the van carrying the members of both Ignominious Incarceration and And Hell Followed With was involved in a crash on the motorway. All members are thankfully alive and well, although some had to be taken to hospital for injuries such as broken bones.

Ignominious Incarceration bassist Chris Ball comments: "Hey guys, sorry the tour got cut short but due to a major incident we are unable to do any shows for a while, we are all okay and still going strong. Up until the incident we had been enjoying the tour and have made some great friends in the process. We will be back as soon as we're all 100% fit enough to take to the stage again. In the mean time just keep your eyes and ears peeled for us hitting the studio at some point and new tour dates. Thanks."

And Hell Followed With guitarist Kyle McIlmurray describes the incident: "Basically we were making a late night drive back to the UK when we nicked a semi truck and got sent like a pinball down the freeway. Most of us sustained minor injuries compared to the guys in Ignom... Thankfully we're all alive. We'll take back pain over death any day. The injuries and damage were so intense that we were forced to cancel the remainder of the tour and head back home. We are so thankful to have had such a great time with the guys in the other bands and play the shows that we did. Words cannot describe how bummed we are that we didn't get to finish it up. We've never backed out on a tour like this... But unfortunately it was out of our hands.

Now that we're home with our families and safe we're going to get ready for the road in September with Suffokate and The Red Shore... It will most certainly be a banger!"

Death Angel - Music Used In Psychological Study

Death Angel were recently used in a psychological study that shows liked and disliked music are equally disruptive to serial recall. The disliked music in the study was the song "Thrashers" by Death Angel.

Dr. Nick Perham explained his reasoning by using Death Angel as the "disliked" music in the study: "We needed a track that most participants would say they did not like. Having been a fan of metal music since my teens, I was pretty confident that a thrash metal song would do the trick as most people never seemed to like the music I liked. In choosing a thrash metal song, I needed a song that was heavy but also allowed the listener to hear many of the different components of the song - the acoustical variation between the successive sound items. We chose "Thrashers". Participants were only allowed to participate in the study if they disliked thrash metal as a musical genre...

Personally, I have been a fan of Death Angel since The Ultra-Violence and saw them at the Bristol Bierkeller around 1990 supporting the Act III album."

For decades research has shown that listening to music can alleviate anxiety and depression, enhance mood, as well as increase cognitive functioning such as spatial awareness. However, until now, research has not addressed how we listen to music. For instance, is the cognitive benefit still the same if we listen to music whilst performing a task, rather than before it? Further, how does our preference for a particular type of music affect performance? A new study from Applied Cognitive Psychology shows that listening to music that one likes whilst performing a serial recall task does not help performance any more than listening to music one does not enjoy.

The researchers explored the "irrelevant sound effect" by requiring participants to perform serial recall (recall a list of 8 consonants in presentation order) in the presence of five sound environments - quiet, liked music (e.g., Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Stranglers and Arcade Fire), disliked music (the track "Thrashers" by Death Angel), changing-state (a sequence of random digits such as '4, 7, 1, 6') and steady-state ('3, 3, 3'). Recall ability was approximately the same, and poorest, for the music and changing-state conditions and the most accurate recall occurred when participants performed the task in the quieter steady-state environments.

Lead researcher Nick Perham explains: "The poorer performance of the music and changing-state sounds are due to them containing lots of acoustical variation the order of which impairs the ability to recall the order of items, via rehearsal, within the presented list. Other tasks and processes that also require the ability to retain order information in the short-term via rehearsal, such as mental arithmetic, may be similarly affected by their performance in the presence of changing-state, background environments."

Pantheist - Finish Recording Split Release

Pantheist have completed the recordings of the track "Barock" for the conceptual split album Unveiling the Signs.

Sound wise, the track harks back to the sound of the band's demo 1000 Years, but with a few subtleties that suggest it's the year 2010 and Pantheist are a full band now. Lyrically, it is a nostalgic looks at a long lost and uncertain past where heroism, fantasy and magic reigned supreme.

A preview of the track will be available on the band's MySpace as soon as it is mastered.

Back in April, the band announced they were writing new compositions for a new album too.

Agathodaimon - New Guitarist Joins The Ranks

Agathodaimon have parted ways with guitarist Jan Jansohn (Adorned Brood). Vocalist/guitarist Martin Wickler had the following to say about this:

"Some of you may have noticed the new photo yesterday already and wondered who this guy might be. Well, we did part ways with Jan due to musical and personal differences and now would like to announce a new guitar player in our ranks; please welcome Thilo Feucht! He's no unknown musician to our fans, you will know him from various contributions and guest appearances he had on Chapter III and Serpent's Embrace, back then under the nick name of Azrael.

He has also joined us on stage several times in the past since Chapter III, and already for our recent gigs we had in Austria and Germany. We're proud that he joined our ranks as full member now, and look forward to working on our sixth album together.

Speaking of album no.6; we can announce the working title In Darkness... it will be a step back to our roots, girls and boys! A studio date is scheduled for early 2011. More news to come soon."
