Obscura - Begin Recording New Album

Progressive death metal act Obscura has begun recording the follow-up album to their breakthrough release Cosmogenesis at Woodshed Studio in southern Germany. Engineer V. Santura (Triptykon, Dark Fortress) will helm the recording. An early 2011 release date is expected with additional album details to be announced soon.

Obscura founder Steffen Kummerer commented on the new album: "We are glad to work with our long-time friend V.Santura once again to record our new album. The new material feels broader in some way as everybody in this band brought many unique ideas to the songwriting and we were able to integrate different elements into our sound. More open chords, more acoustic guitars, more seven string shred-tunes. Remember: more is always more. We are excited to create another album of progressive death metal and to start touring through the whole world in early 2011."

Obscura's recording and touring line-up remains as Kummerer on guitar and vocals, Christian Muenzner on guitar, Jeroen Paul Thesseling on bass and Hannes Grossman on drums. The band will round out the Cosmogenesis touring cycle with a performance as part of the Mezcal Metal Festival in Mexico City, Mexico in September.

Theudho - Joined By New Bassist

Belgian Pegan black metallers Theudho has posted the following news on their MySpace blog:

"Multi-instrumentalist Nick, known from bands such as Waelcyrge, Grimm, Hooded Priest, Zwartketterij, Gae Bolga and Hypochondria, has agreed to play bass on the upcoming Theudho album. Nick almost played bass for Theudho for a bunch of live dates back in 2007/2008, but it never happened due to practical reasons. We've known Nick for quite a long time, so now the time has come to see where this cooperation will lead us!"

Theudho are now in the the final phase of the writing process for the next album.

In the meantime, drummer Joachim, who handled the drums on The Völsunga Saga and Cult of Wuotan has agreed to return for the recording of the album. Guitar wizard extraordinaire Dieter, who also stepped in during the fall/winter of 2008, will take care of all the leads and solos on the album.

Def Leppard - Working On Live Album

Def Leppard are planning to release their first live album in 2011.

Speaking to Billboard.com, frontman Joe Elliott revealed that the band are looking to put out a live record culled from their 2009 tour. They hope to add a four or five track EP of brand new material to go along with it.

"There'll be stuff from this century on it - "Rock On", "Nine Lives", "Come On Come On" - Elliott notes. "Vivian has been in the band 17 years, so I think he deserves a shot at being on a live record. We've got a live video out from the Steve era, "In the Round, In Your Face"; I've always said before that if you're desperate to hear us live, put that video on and turn your telly off and just listen to the sound."

The band, who are taking 2010 off, are also planning to release a brand new coffee table book after purchasing 250,000 classic images from photographer Ross Halfin.

"I think initially we're going to put out a coffee table book... that covers all aspects of our career, from On Through the Night through last year, with commentary from the band and the photographer and maybe a few celebrities and fans," Elliott says. The group intends to follow with what he calls "an encyclopaedia collection of different eras from the band."

The band stated: "We express our deepest regrets and apologies for those who tended to see us this Summer and hope we'll rock next time! (hope soon) We also express deepest regrets for ourselves of course, as the ride was planned to be a top-event for the band this summer.

Meanwhile, we're solving the mysteries of the third album, including tracklist, musical content, mythology and surprises... and other important details. Recording of the Elemental Tales album is planned for Autumn. Don't forget to download for free Svartby's latest teaser-single "Scum from Underwater" at this location. Dwarf Planet - Debut Album Available For Free Download

Richie Pony, the debut album of Romanian experimental project Dwarf Planet, is now available for download exclusively on Metalhead.ro, free of charge of course. To ensure high quality, the album can be downloaded in both MP3 format and WAW. Click here for your download copy. You can also preview one track, called "To Ride Eyes", at the same location.

The entire creative process of Richie Pony took place between 2008-2010. The recording, mixing and mastering was done with the help of Alex Dragomir, guitarist of the band.

Richie Pony contains 10 purely experimental songs featuring a concept that binds classic elements of metal, hardcore, alternative rock, rock 'n roll and a slight tinge of avantgarde.

This is what Dwarf Planet said themselves about the material: "Richie Pony is the result of a process that took about two years, during which we recorded and re-recorded, added ideas constantly until it reached a line that defines us all. We can not classify it, it is a personal vision transposed into reality and hopefully open-minded people will understand exactly what Richie Pony means, both musically and conceptually.

We re-recorded, recomposed, rearranged. The voices were a big issue, we can say that we have one of the most complex vocal arrangements made in recent years in Romania. We are extremely proud of what we accomplished."

All info about the band on MySpace.

Richie Pony tracklist:

01. The Guardian's Game
02. Love Song
03. Rock & Roll
04. A Social Misunderstanding
05. Metal Head
06. Masca De Broasca (Frog Mask)
07. Aquatic

Nightwish - New Album In The Works

Nightwish keyboard player Tuomas Holopainen has announced the band is working on new material and will start recording a new album in October. In an update in the band's "Summer Camp diary" he writes:

"Almost exactly 4 years ago we gathered into an idyllic place in the small village of Sävi to rehearse and arrange what would later be called Dark Passion Play. It was such glorious and inspiring times that we decided to do something similar with the upcoming Nightwish album called...

So again we are here in the deepest countryside of Finland beginning to create a follower for DPP. It's just us guys for now, Anette will join the camp a bit later. We arrived yesterday and the reunion was celebrated with some water-skiing, bbq and Quilmes. I foresee the same trinity taking place more or less on a daily basis.

We just got the equipment and PA set up with the help of our legendary engineer/co-producer TeeCee Kinnunen and probably will start working with the songs in a couple of days. This campsite is so amazing we'll let that sauna of a rehearsal room wait in silence for a while, and just concentrate on chilling out and catching up. And raising the official NW camp - flag high into the pole.

I have 12 songs completed now, but am still working with some lyrics. It's been an immensely fruitful songwriting process, as well as very consuming and ponderous. But I feel more satisfied with the stuff than ever before. Don't know if it's a good sign or bad. To me the album sounds like a rollercoaster ride in a theme park designed by Neil Gaiman, Tim Burton and Salvador Dali. That's the best way I can put it at this point.

Like before, we will record a demo once the songs are arranged, to listen to and to perfect the material, and to give to Mr. Pip Williams so he can start with the orchestration process. The actual enter-the-studio-date is set for October 15th. Again, the London orchestra and choir will be there, as well as Mr. Troy Donockley playing a slightly bigger part this time. And loads of new elements 'n twists we haven't tried before!

So things are finally rolling. We'll keep you posted in written, as well as in visual form. Stay tuned for updates."
