Testament - Drummer Leaves, Starts New Band

Terrorizer have announced that Testament drummer Paul Bostaph has left the band to form his own band Black Gates with former Anthrax singer Dan Nelson.

Chuck stated:

"We just found our last week Paul Bostaph is not coming back to the band, he's starting his own new project and doing some things on his own. So we're actually going to be holding a couple of auditions with probably small group of drummers that we chose - we don't want to have a revolving drum stool, we have a new record we want a permanent drummer... We're still buddies, it's just that Paul feels at this point in his career he wants to be in a little more in control of the artistic creation of the songs and with his new project they are all involved with that process whereas with our group Eric is pretty much the main songwriter and that's just the way its been with us for 25 years."

A band with Dan Nelson? I can't say I'm eagerly awaiting the product of that partnership, but good luck to Paul anway...

I'd really love for Testament to nab Gene Hoglan or John Tempesta, but I can't see either of them permanently joining the band.

Mike Portnoy? He'd probably see it as beneath him to take the permanent drumming spot in Testament, though he's certainly more than technically capable of fulfilling the role.

Umm nah I don't think his style (or flare) would mix well with Testament, also I highly doubt he is going to move from France to California and quit Dagoba to play with a bunch of old dudes that will likely damper his creativity (and style/flare). As Chuck said "Eric writes pretty much everything"...

He played in Avenged Sevenfold, so your argument doesn't stand I ended up on this thread by accident, but seeing Mike's actions lately, it's quite possible he'd join a band of their size, be all vocal about it, then fizzle and leave so it might be Testament.

Yep, it does, as I was talking about how he'd probably look at it, not how I look at it.

I approve this statement. Gene Hoglan, imo, is the best choice for sitting on Testament's throne; however (and very unfortunately) I can not see him leaving such a sweet deal with Metalacolypse, or even Zimmers Hole, to focus 100% on Testament like they want.

He is technically capable but I really don't believe that his style (or his attitude) will be very welcome in a straight forward (as lately, modern) thrash band like Testament. Also Testament is looking for someone like Paul Bostaph and Gene Hoglan who is just a drummer and doesn't actually participate in the whole song writing process because that's Eric's territory and I don't believe Portnoy would be able to just write drum tracks and leave everything else to Eric.

Sadly, I think you are right. Although I personally would much rather see him in Testament than either of those bands, or even Fear Factory...

About what you said about Mike Portnoy, I pretty much agree with that. If Mike did become a full member of Testament, it's certain he would want to be actively involved in the songwriting, which seems like one of the reasons why Paul has left in the first place.

As for Louie Clemente... he was always a very average drummer I thought. Nothing great. Comparable with Lars Ulrich.

or even Fear Factory...

Oh yea I forgot he's doing their drumming too, honestly though I don't really see that lasting very long; Fear Factory doesn't strike me as being thrashy enough for him to stick with. As for Metalocalypse, I like Metalocalypse and I like that Brendan has someone like Gene as the drummer so I can't really complain about that but if I had to say I'd like to see him leave a band to do something better (like Testament) I'd say he should drop Fear Factory. Honestly though now that I'm here typing this up I am realizing that I haven't really found myself caring about Metalocalypse; truth be told I haven't listened to or watched that show in some time so I could care less if he drops that. I would however be very sad if he dropped Zimmers Hole, I think if he dropped Fear Factory and Metalocalypse he would have plenty of time for both Testament and Zimmers Hole (ZH is a bit of back burner band for all them anyway I think); Testament could even be the band that fills that void which has been missing from his career since the dissolution of Strapping Young Lad.

Well, I like Fear Factory, I just don't think Gene's style suits the band. Raymond Herrera is a much better fit for that band than Gene is. And yep, Zimmer's Hole has always been more like a side project band, than a real full time band. So, he could easily commit to Testament if he stopped doing Metalocalypse and Fear Factory...

And yep, there has been a void in his career since SYL bit the dust, so Testament would be perfect to fill that. I can't see it happening though, sadly.

Well don't get me wrong I do enjoy me some Fear Factory however I prefer older Fear Factory; after Dino left was not the same (too watered down imo) and now that he's back after so many years playing death metal (and I think especially because Gene is the drummer) Mechanize just sounded too much like Divine Heresy, albeit with an added touch of Demanufacture. So I have to agree completely that Gene's style is totally off base for FF in comparison to Raymond's (that was so fucked how Burton replaced him and Christian) so I would love for them to find an industrial drummer (I would say Raymond but I seriously doubt that he or Christian will go back after what Burton did) to play with them rather than a death/thrash drummer. But we shall see what happens, Gene is after all recording all the drum tracks for the new Testament album so maybe we shall all get lucky and Gene will be convinced to stay.

I couldn't agree more about the way Raymond and Christian were treated. It was abysmal, and I'd be surprised if either of them would even consider going back to FF after how they were treated. But Raymond is really the type of drummer that suits FF's style perfectly.

Gene finished up his drum tracks for the new Testament album a while ago, and he's recently finished a stint drumming for them on the Anthrax/Testament/Death Angel tour package. With Paul Bostaph now out of the band, I hope Testament will at least ask him to stay permanently.

Bitch, he has arthritis and can't drum. -_-

Anyway, damn this. I hope they get a better drummer or someone that good at least. But REALLY, a project with Dan Nelson? Horrific.
In any case, I'm glad this will probably not delay the album further.

I know this would be a far shot, but I'd like to see Testament keep up with their trend of supporting former members of Death and toss Richard Christie on the throne... He's probably my favorite one to hear, backing Chuck on The Sound of Perseverance. I wouldn't really see it happening, though, since I believe Richard's not really playing drums anymore, and has a gig with Howard Stern's Sirius XM radio show.
