Steven Wilson - Crowned Prog Rock King At Progressive Music Awards

After receiving very positive feedback for his brilliant 2015 album, Hand. Cannot. Erase., Steven Wilson was awarded the Album Of The Year award, the Commercial Breakthrough award and The Storm Thorgerson Grand Design Award at this year's Progressive Music Awards held in London, UK. Following these awards, Wilson was crowned prog rock king as he continues to find solo success.

Wilson himself shared his gratitude via Facebook: "Thank you to those that voted for me and to Prog Magazine and TeamRock for awarding me three prizes at last night's Progressive Music Awards. I am honored to have received awards for album of the year, commercial breakthrough and box set design where recognition should be shared with Lasse Hoile, Hajo Mueller and Carl Glover. Matt Berry (who will be opening for me at the Royal Albert Hall on 29th September) was there to present me with the album of the year award."

Steven Wilson's Blackfield counterpart, Aviv Geffen, also shared his thoughts on Blackfield's Facebook page, with a modest, simple reply: "So proud for my friend & partner. Finally you'll harvest what you deserve."

Swedish group Opeth won best band, while Genesis keyboard player Tony Banks was named "Prog God". Pink Floyd had three nominations but won nothing for their album The Endless River, based on unreleased material from sessions for their 1994 album The Division Bell. So he went to the event wearing an ABBA t-shirt?

He deserves the award considering he's been making music for more than 20 years, plus his solo albums are great.

Well it was pretty expected considering he's the undisputed face of modern prog at the moment.

That being said, I do feel the guy is quite overrated honestly. He's pretty damn good, and very consistent, but there are a lot of prog acts out there who fit the same description and also bring a more unique sound to the mix.

Still congrats to him nonetheless. He's obviously worked hard and has earned the rewards he's received. He's a good icon for the scene to have so I'm not complaining.

It seems to me like you're contradicting yourself here; so if Wilson is pretty damn good and consistent, how is he overrated (meaning getting undeserved praise)?

Dare I ask what prog bands you are thinking about?

Nah, no contradiction there. People tend to confuse the word "overrated" with "bad". I think Wilson's a solid artist, and I don't think he's made an album I flat out disliked, but I feel he's far from the absolute deity which many prog fans make him out to be. As such he fits the bill of "overrated".

As for prog acts with similarly great consistency but a bit more originality, just off the top of my head I can think of Leprous, The Mars Volta, Magma, Gazpacho, maudlin of the Well, Änglagård and Tool, though some of these are admittedly stretching.

I just feel like the reason Wilson gets a lot of his attention is because he plays it relatively safe with a familiar formula. I don't really have much issue with it, since he does do it well, but as such he also doesn't live up to the deified image many proggers portray him with in my eyes. He's good at what he does, but most of his stuff doesn't leave me in any kind of amazement.

Nailed it. Furthermore, he's the kinda guy whose made it his life's purpose to be the ultimate prog professor and he gets a lot of credit for it, even if it had nothing to do with his own music.
