Metal Storm Awards 2015 - Now Open

Ladies and djentlemen, it's that time of year again - the Metal Storm Awards 2015 are open for business.

The voters are about to swarm like gundarks, so be prepared to withstand the onslaught of chatter and indiscriminate, early bird vote-lobbing that will soon unfold.

For the next however many days are in February this year (lousy indecisive month), the Awards are all yours to paw through and explore. We've got an impressive array of nominees, as usual, so don't be afraid to consider the other candidates before purposefully striding right past them and voting for your favorite band anyway.

Click here for the best that Metal had to offer us in 2015. As always, feel free to discuss below how much you love us and agree with our decisions (or not).

Team MS.

BTW. Westfield Massacre (aka Divine Heresy reunion without Cazares) should be on first place in drama category

Why are so many people calling this a "Divine Heresy reunion without Dino"? A) there was no Joe Payne, and B) to my knowledge they did not do any tour or whatever in which they played strictly Divine Heresy tunes together without Dino. Just because it is a post-DH project involving 2 former members of DH does not make it a DH reunion, that makes it a whole new project. And if they did happen to play some DH tunes together on a tour or at some shows, that just means they played some DH covers live.

That's why I don't do write-ins this time. I'll choose one of the selected albums. And if I'm not ok with them I will not vote.

Meh. I'm staff and have done write-ins for albums that didn't make it. Don't care if they finished dead last, let alone challenge first. I vote for what I think is best.

I always did too, but fortunately this year my favorite genres all have my fav album, so no problem there. And yeah, when I see a categorie without my fav, I propably do the write-in again. (haha, already did with drama of the year)

If votes are nuked I think we should get notification, because ok 1 months but if this is like last February? we are not able to re vote , or PM

so, easy rule: listen first, vote later.

doom, extreme doom, heavy and other I have heard all albums and much much much more, but same time Draconian still plays gothic/doom whitch is DOOM and I think this is best their album, and still dont get why it can not be under doom, powerful album, better as others, thanks to Hejke

Draconian are way more gothic than doom, so should be voted for in gothic.

I'm on the fence on this one. Some of their stuff is far more Doom than Gothic, but other stuff is the other way around. I think i'd say the core genre is both equally. However, the latest album is more Doom by far (which is why i think it should be in Doom category this year), and the first album is more Gothic by far.

Hi! Name's Rod. I listen to albums too (I've seen Oblivionized live too!).
Oblivionized was a tricky one because I think it could go to either one... Only not really. I fucked up on that one tbh. Wish I gave you a good explanation to why I fucked up but I have none besides "way too much to do with the Awards". I'm only thankful it didn't end up in a worse Place.

As for many categories and stuff, well... Metal is like that. Merging categories like melodeath and metalcore wouldn't work. Bands like The Agonist could have worked as metalcore back in the Lullabies album but I dont Think so anymore.
Cattle Dcapitation Went indeed through a long ass debate regarding Death and grindcore!
Merging Death and grind would be a terrible idea though. It would involve having bands like, let's say... Bloodbath and Pig Destroyer! Not compatible.

As for Tribulation, I'll just respond the same way I responded Joe:
Quote:
Urgh, I was tired after all the discussions. Consider that Death metal tag as a good ol' "fuuuuuuuuuck it", at least from me to you babe <3

Thanks for the explanation Rod. All forgiven on Oblivionized. Very good album and thanks for introducing them to me.

You do realise it's funny to say that Bloodbath and Pig Destroyer don't work well together but we are left with Tribulation "fitting in" in with Cruciamentum or any of them fitting with Gruesome's 1988 Death tribute Savage Land.

Death Metal is very diverse and it often overlaps with grindcore in a number of different ways (e.g. Lock Up versus Cattle Decapitation or 1990s Napalm Death). And a lot of the newer DM stuff has next to nothing to do with the 1980s/early 1990s sound.

Melodic DM in my mind fits in with metalcore especially as melodic metalcore is in essence Americanised melodic death metal with breakdowns (and not all used these). The idea works well if you consider At The Gates and a lot of their imitators or that a lot of early 2000s metalcore were basically playing Clayman rehashes in the early 1990s or heavily tied in with ATG.

Just my $0.02 and I don't think it really matters. Thanks for all your hard work!

You know, as much sh*t as this community gives power metal... you have to admit, the genre had a lot of solid releases in 2015. That will be a close one.

For all the other genres, I already have one or two favorites... but I'm going to try and be a good voter this year and give the other nominations a fair listen, as well.

Hmm. Oky doky then. Guess I didn't bother to look far enough back to realize that.

In the wake of this information I did end up finding an article indicating just that, that Tommy and Tim did indeed originally want Westfield Massacre to be a continuation of Divine Heresy without Dino. But even still, based on what I read, I still wouldn't consider it a "reunion" in the beginning, just another Gorgoroth/Quuensryche/Immortal type of feud, except in the case of DH and DH2.0 Dino had apparently done enough of the legal footwork on the DH name to have been able to quell that shit without T and T having any ground to stand on to attempt to take the name from Dino.

Maybe reducing number of categories so death/grind or merging metalcore and melodic death together (and maybe also including a lot of folk)?
!

I, for one, think that we should consider further dividing DM, given the fact that there is this huge new wave of old school death metal now. I am totally fine with having one catagory for brutal/ tech death and one for the rest (excluding melodic death, which is not death metal most of the time tbh)

That would make it even more unwieldy and just increases the workload for the staffers. And you'd get these barely populated categories such as the melodic death metal one (5 entries) or largely scrapping the bottom of the barrel such as the thrash metal one.

my point is that death metal these days is maybe in its most diverse state, and high quality death metal records are also not as rare as ten years ago. Maybe the form of death metal that I am into at least. So, more exposure would not hurt anyone.

Well there's no groove metal category so LoG should go somewhere and thrash is best fit. Also you need at least 1 good album in thrash category.

Exactly theorignal metalcore has nothing to do with mdm whatsoever. It was actually a mix of hardcore and metal. Think of bands such as Merauder, most of the Cro Mags albums, most of Agnostic Front albums. etc.

So little Maco was ready to vote for the best melodic death metal album, he in a happy way thought "This category will be ez life ez game considering that Soilwork has the best mdm album I heard from this year, sure there were some other good albums but The Ride Majestic is the superior album, I will just vote for it now yeah! I am more than sure it is the better album out of the nominates".

His face of disappointment is still there after watching the nominates, and in a sad mood checked one album from one band he never listened to.

Yes, since both are non-extreme doom albums. SoD might be funeral but so damn light that it was put in the regular doom category.

Just voted and added some bands that deserve to be nominated because they released great albums in 2015. One of them is a metal band from Portugal that is not even in your bands data. I'm talking about the industrial metal band Bizarra Locomotiva that released the great album "Mortuário" in 2015. Here is some videos of the album songs.
