Schammasch - 'Triangle' Cover Art Revealed

Schammasch have unveiled the cover that will grace their new album Triangle. By now, we know that the album will be out worldwide on April 29th via Prosthetic Records. The release will contain 3 discs and artwork done by acclaimed photographer Ester Segarra (Behemoth, Electric Wizard, Watain). You can feast your eyes on it below. Enter the realm of Triangle. The music will come later, on next Monday.

C.S.R. commented: "I was thinking about a proper artwork concept for months, before finally deciding which way to go. I remember there where many vague ideas already, back when I was doing vocal recordings in Bavaria, but nothing concrete or striking. The only thing that was clear was, that this album would require something timeless and classy, something that wouldn't be bound to a certain genre or style.

I've looked through countless classic paintings and checked out a lot of artists to find inspirations, and finally did, when I saw some of the sculptures of Richard MacDonald, a US sculptor artist. They just hit the mark, so I started to work out some ideas around them, and finally came up with a draft for the front artwork, which I thought was pure magic. I've showed it to my band and it was clear in no time, that we had found what was needed. But since we didn't get permission to use the sculptures' photographs, we had to think about recreating them with an actual model, which seemed quite challenging. By that time I got in touch with Ester Segarra from London, for doing the band's photographs, so I've explained the concept to her, to see if something like that would even be possible with the budget we could offer.

Fortunately she was very interested in the idea and immediately started to work out plans for realising the concept. When she came up with the first model options, we decided for Sasha Krohn, a circus artist and aerial performer also based in London, which turned out to be a very good choice. Finally we did the shootings in November '15, in London, and it was a complete success.

It was also clear to have our long-time artist and friend Valnoir / Metastazis on board, for the final layout. He came up with a simplified concept of my original drafts, which added even more of a unique character to the concept. And in the end I couldn't be more pleased with the outcome of this project. It was an immense challenge to realise it, but this album deserved nothing less.

So here it is, the first and major part of a truly timeless work of art. Like it or not."

Nope. I definitely won't go that far at all. I actually think it's an improvement.

I prefer the previous cover art but this one is fine. Quite classy.

I love how Metastazis' contribution to this was just probably just the sodding triangle though. I wonder if they paid him for that

"Hey mate, we have this really cool photo that we need a graphical overlay for."

"What's the album called?"

"Triangle."

"Ok, leave it with me."

Two weeks elapses.

"Here you go."

"Oh. Er, yeah, cheers. I guess that makes sense."

"Great. That'll be 500 euros, please."

Considering how famous and praised he is... I'm gonna bet it was along these lines:

" Oh dear lord that's fucking brilliant. Here, have 500 euros and fuck my wife!"

For the record, I don't find anything stupid or offensive about this artwork at all. I agree that it has a classy vibe to it. I think it would have been nicer without the triangle though. Kind of like the last Altar Of Plagues.

Now I think about I wonder how many of his artworks are actually just the graphical overlays, and not the photos themselves... I guess most of them are purely graphical art though.

Wouldn't surprise me if that's what he does most of the time. Kind of what Mories does with his artwork, but Mories isn't swimming in money and praise like this fella.

I realise I sound too harsh, I actually like the artwork this dude does most of the time. I mean... He's not fcuking Seth Siro.

I don't hate it either

That's a really unconventional concept... They were even asked the fans on Facebook for their eye closed pictures; the winner became a part of the layout. More bands should do that!

I don't find the triangle bad at all. I feel like maybe it's a little plain, but I agree that the whole thing is pretty classy.

Besides, the triangle in and of itself is a classic alchemical symbol. The Hermeticists (as well as Freemasons and other secret societies) frequently used the Seal of Solomon in a lot of their occult teachings (which you might recognize as the Star of David, which, contrary to popular belief, is not actually judaic in origin but is in fact occult). The Seal of Solomon is the union of the upward and downward facing triangles, representing male/fire and female/water respectively, culminating in the union and perfection of creation.

The upward-pointing triangle represents the energy of will, or ascension, as well as a vast number of other things. I'm sure they meant it to be way more than just a simple triangle on the cover, it's most likely meant to evoke all of the occult concepts which the triangle represents.

More like tried to be classy and failed concept for me. I generally like geometrical shapes and sharp edges, but the triangle is really out of place IMO.
The concept of having a guy on the cover like that also reminds me of Altar Of Plagues cover, indeed, which was also one strikingly ugly cover.

I had this impression that they will have something symbolic and occult like the cover of BaN,s Desanctification. Too bad they didn't go for sth like that.

Haha, I was in the same situation. I had to go snooping around someone's profile to find the name, and by the time I finally figured it out I couldn't be arsed to post about it.

Not the first time he's done something similar:

I think that one, the Memoria Vetusta I LP art, looks better than the Schammasch one though.
