This feels incredibly dated in terms of songwriting. The opening guitar riff with one single power chord over and over combined with the most overused keyboard melody in all of prog is just so damned lazy. I've adjusted my expectations downward after listening to this.

Pleasant surprise, and a great song to boot.

Beats being innovators just for the sake of it.
Don't get me wrong, I like being pleasantly surprised as much as the next guy and I do see your point, however, and even despite being against formulaic types of songwriting, I don't think everything needs to be modernized.
You say that the intro is overused by prog in general, but did they used it before? The answer is no, so why should they abstain from using something that's not in their discography? Because others used it before? Come on, that's the same as forbidding the major pentatonic because Maiden already did everything that can be done with it.

Seventh Wonder can do whatever they want. In this case I get nothing out what they've done. I would, however, argue that sometimes setting limits to one's creative process can actually bring great results. An obvious non-metal example being Johnny Marr of The Smiths. He forbid himself from using power chords, epic lengthy solos, and distortion and the result was some of the finest music ever made. This doesn't always work, of course. Whatever the creative process and the thought behind this Seventh Wonder track was, the results are disappointing.

With the April fools joke your point became a little hard to read, but I'll give it a go anyway.
In theory I tend to agree that creating self-imposed handicaps might open the doors to awesome new solutions. That's fun to do and a nice experiment, but cannot be applied to everyone. The dna of a band, the "what&how" they do things, and the expectations of a solidified fan base need to be taken in consideration, so I don't think that - or any other out-there experiment - would be the solution, for it would completely disrupt the status quo of the group.
I already gave the example of Iron Maiden so I'll keep on using it.
They play and do what they've always played and did. Even when they introduced a tiny hint of prog in their compositions it wasn't blatantly obvious, it was just a natural progression of trying to add new elements into their songs without alienating the long-time fans' expectations.
Tldr: I still see your point, I do get what you're saying and even agree with the general idea behind it. I just don't think it would be a good solution for a band like Seventh Wonder.
As for the disappointing results, well, those are always personal opinions so I'll abstain myself from comment. Just gonna say though, on a quick glance around that's not the general consensus.
Cheers and thank you for debating.

Yeah, it seems most fans dig the track and that's great. I hope the album will be good overall. Cheers!
