2022 Metal Storm Awards Now Open

The Metal Storm Awards can never arrive fast enough - for one full month of 2023, you've been waiting for our biggest event of the year (and we've been frantically scrambling to put it together). The wait is well worth it, though, because we seem to be the only publication on the internet that actually waits until the end of the year to post our end-of-year lists. You'd be surprised how many great albums slide under the door at the end of December. 2022 was a full 12 months, like any other year, and it produced a vast array of exciting albums that you might not have had a chance to find yet; we hope you enjoy this year's edition of the MSAs.

You'll notice a couple of changes - minor cosmetic ones, really, as they shouldn't affect your experience other than to make some things clearer (or possibly make other things muddier). One of those changes is that we've retitled the "Heavy/Melodic Metal" category as "Heavy/Traditional Metal". When you get right down to it, that "melodic" half was an afterthought that wasn't really doing much work; most metal is "melodic" to some degree or another (we even have categories specifically set aside for "melodic" black metal and "melodic" death metal), and how many bands out there would you describe as simply "melodic metal"? As veteran appraisers of press kits and promo blurbs, we can tell you that most people use the phrase "melodic metal" to mean "boring, derivative metalcore", and that's not really what we meant when we said that there ought to be a "Heavy/Melodic Metal" category. What we meant was "we need somewhere to put Amorphis that we don't have to think about too hard". So why "Traditional" instead? Well, truthfully "Heavy Metal" functions well enough on its own as a description of the particular substyles we feature in that category, so we considered just truncating the name, but we decided that clarity would be better served by having another adjective in tow just so people know we're talking about a subgenre and not all heavy metal. If a band or label or someone who wasn't a regular Metal Storm user saw that an album was nominated for "Best Heavy Metal Album of 20XX", they'd probably assume that we'd nominated it for Album of the Year or Best #1 Overall Thing or something like that, right? And what we mean is not that, but "in league with [bands that sound specifically like] Satan". Now, the idea of "traditional metal" is kind of silly, since already from Black Sabbath's day there are all kinds of varieties and offshoots being realized that differ wildly from each other - most of the time, bands that claim to play "traditional metal" are actually just mashing up NWOBHM, '80s arena rock, and a few drams of thrash. But the term is used a lot, and the important thing is that we expect that everyone will know what we mean by it. "Heavy/Traditional Metal" it is.

Additionally, the "Thrash Metal" category has become "Thrash/Speed". No, not "Speed/Thrash", which is easier to say and more pleasing to the ears, but "Thrash/Speed", which avoids messing with our familiar alphabetical order. And thrash is more important anyway, as we know. But the two go together logically, so now we don't have to agonize over whether to put speed metal albums in Thrash, Heavy, or Power depending on the slight differences in chemical balance.

Another difference we must note, with a little less enthusiasm, is the absence of the Drama of the Year category for the third year running. As with the rest of Metal Storm during our ongoing bug hunt, it is our intent that this time around the denial of service represent active reconfiguration as opposed to mysterious disappearance - but let us explain.

The Drama of the Year category has been one of the most popular elements of the Metal Storm Awards ever since their inception. Back in those days, forum denizens around the metalsphere were devouring popcorn to the escalating telenovela that was Spatovarius, the laughably un-kvlt courtroom drama of Gorgoroth, the epic battle of Metal Storm vs. Wikipedia - news stories that enjoyed a lot of currency in the still-youthful days of heavy metal's internet fandom and, we decided, had value in their capacity to shock, entertain, or cause controversy. Everyone loves a good soap opera, so the category became a fixture. Starting with the 2015 Awards, I (ScreamingSteelUS) personally assumed administration of the Drama and took a measure of pride in making the category as flashing and amusing as I could, writing lengthy editorials for each entry, coming up with goofy puns to use in the headlines, and getting (un)creative with the images placed alongside. It was a rewarding project for me, as I found it an engaging writing prompt and folks seemed to enjoy the humorous appraisals.

For the 2020 edition of the MSAs, we took a year off from this award, reasoning that everybody already knew what the "drama" of that year was (and boy was this reasoning correct). Our intent was to return with a normal category for the 2021 edition last year, but that long absence stoked a reevaluation of the nature and function of Drama of the Year. As we contemplated a grandiose return last January, we found in front of us a long list of terrible incidents that happened or came to light in 2021: physical abuse, sexual violence, emotional torture, child pornography, depression, burnout, bitter personal enmity, and even deadly insurrection. I collected these headlines, wondering what to feature, until the other members of staff began to articulate that none of that was appropriate material to compete with the tale of Suicidal Tendencies getting banned from Instagram because their name isn't very nice. These were the most talked-about news stories of the year, yes, and certainly "dramatic" all of them, but the more we debated the entries, the less amusement we found in the prospect of affixing jokey titles to them and asking our readers to rank them according to sensational value.

And then it became clear that at some point in my reign I'd lost my grip on what exactly "drama" entailed. In addition to persistent volleys of ludicrous intrigue from Wintersun's hot tub quest, Batushka's steady mitosis, and Crematory's demands for richer fans, I'd started filtering in stories about rape allegations, domestic violence, child abuse - stories that attracted the type of discussion and coverage that seemed indicative of a good Drama candidate, but, as I failed to see, also revolved around serious topics that deserved a more respectful venue than a carnival of parody. Although I usually took care to word my accounts carefully so as to avoid impressions of judgment or levity when handling sensitive subjects, the very practice of making an "award" out of this undercuts even the most respectful treatment in prose. We agreed - somewhat belatedly - that asking people to vote for their favorite stories of human suffering was an irresponsible and potentially harmful way of dealing with those events; we couldn't continue to award a title like this that made sport of painful personal trials. No one (mostly) deserves to have the worst moments of their lives voted on like some kind of sick game show. That is why the 2021 Metal Storm Awards featured no Drama of the Year category - not even an empty canvas with an explanatory note as in the 2020 edition, but nothing whatsoever.

For this year's edition, we initially decided to experiment with a new format, something more along the lines of a "year in review"-style article that would hit upon the positives and negatives of 2022 in a way that didn't subject them to the indignity of competition and enjoyed a little more freedom to discuss rather than summarize. I kicked around a draft for a few weeks before ultimately realizing that it just wasn't coming together - there were so many tragic and disgusting stories, for starters. The whole thing was feeling terribly unbalanced and was, in the end, not especially fun; not that those topics don't deserve to be talked about, but we figure that people come to the Metal Storm Awards for a respite from the outside world that weighs us down day after day. On top of that, the thing was becoming so unwieldy and uninteresting even to myself that I became convinced nobody would ever bother to read the whole thing, let alone find anything of value in it. So I once again jettisoned our plans for a Drama-type category and opted to have nothing in its place.

Where does that leave us now? Well, Drama of the Year has a long history on Metal Storm, and even though it has become clear that we need to take a very hard look at how we approach it, we're loathe to abandon it altogether. I've had a difficult time determining how to approach it all this time, but our hope, and let's say our goal, is to bring it back in 2024 for the 2023 Awards with a batch of stories that are just silly. Stupid, fun, ridiculous stories like Uada melting in the sun and Sepultura getting called devil-worshipers by the Lebanese government. That's how this category started out, and that's how it really should have been all this time.

To those readers who found the Drama of the Year category crude and injurious, I apologize for choosing to make light of the abuses, addictions, and breakdowns that have too often occurred in the scope of our community. It is incongruous with the example that Metal Storm wants to set and with what I myself want to be. In the spirit of self-improvement that Metal Storm has embraced in its guiding philosophy as well as its virtual presentation these last couple of years, it is my hope that we can make the MSAs a better experience for everyone. For now, in the absence of Drama of the Year, I hope that you will continue to submit your Metal Storm-related disappointments as write-in votes for the Biggest Letdown category.

That's the official explanation for the lack of Drama of the Year this year (and last year as well). If you're still reading this, then by now the Awards are almost over, so you'd better hurry up and cast your votes before it turns into March. Here's to a more respectable MSA season in 2023.

Everyone knows that the popular ones are gonna win regardless of quality.

So remember the TRUE, secret-menu reason for the Awards: To discover bands you missed from last year.

I'm particularly pleased about this edition for two reasons:

#1: This is my tenth edition of the Metal Storm Awards participating from the staff side. When the 2013 edition opened, I'd been a contributor for a few months; I submitted five album write-ups and had almost no part in the preparation otherwise. Now we're at the 2022 edition and I get to open the voting myself. I've had a fantastic time being involved in the MSAs over the years. I think my crowning achievement was the 2016 edition, when I did 101 of the 240 total write-ups myself. I'm still proud of that, although it's really nice not having to do quite so much of the work single-handed nowadays.

#2: As of the moment I opened the voting, I had only 19 nominated albums left to listen to (not counting the Clandestine Cuts). Most years I never make it all the way through every category even after the full month, but this year I was able to vote in almost every category right off the bat (the condition here being that I don't vote unless I've listened to every nominee in a given category, to make it fair). I think this'll be one of only three years that I've managed to vote in every main genre category, and I think only one other time was I successful in hitting the CCs and all the special categories on top of that.

It may have been awkward for me to shitpost, now that I met some of the staff IRL.
Kidding, it's not awkward at all.
Let's start then.
The hell is Amorphis doing in folk? It should be in..
uh...
You know, nevermind

Alright, thanks, guys, again, I will have some fun with the albums. Although due to a small change in my listening habits, this time I think I've already heard the majority of the nominated (at least those more to my tastes) already. I've already started checking out the rest but when the first album of the first category is Indian nu-metal, then well... but I'm sure some others nominees are cool!

Yeah, we had quite a discussion about where to put them. With the removal of the "melodic metal" category it was eventually decided that folk would be the least bad fit.

As a regular member I'm saying this with all humility possible. I feel a little proud that the different staffers (mostly netzach, nikarg and musclassia) actually like the recommendations I'm spamming them with and deem them worthy for reviews and now even some for the MSAs. My contributions to this year's awards are Korpelarörelsen, Vanhävd, Jordfäst and Euphrosyne in the Clandestine Cut category. I feel very appreciative towards the staff for taking time to listen to our recommendations (I'm certainly not the only one recommending stuff) and for talking to us regular users in general both in comments and DMs. You never ever get the feeling that they think that they're bigger or better just because they run the site. Because at the end of the day we're all here for the love of (metal) music and personally I see it as a given to share great music that others might miss out on otherwise.

With that said, I hope all of you will enjoy the bands mentioned above (and hopefully giving them a vote too ) And to the staff, sincerely thank you for taking on the Herculean task that is the MSA and showing us all the goodies we might've missed out on. Highlight of the year! Keep up the great work, it certainly is appreciated. Cheers!

Nothing gets me through February like the MS Awrds. Looks like another great year. I got started with Doom last night and it's a beauty of a category.
Guys, what is going on in Post Metal? Ha ha ha. That category is ridiculous. Panzerfaust vs Russian Circles? I laugh because I love both these albums. The whole category is stacked. I guess COL wins by default, but that wont be where my vote goes.
Anyways, thanks again for doing this. It's an awesome gift.

Panzerfaust have gradually transitioned from black to post metal and I'm kinda glad because now I can vote for another BM record.

It happens amusingly often that I'm reading a review and see in the comments or in the review itself that you're the one who originally dug up the album. Korpelarörelsen was one of my personal highlights from last year, so thank you for all your great finds.

My contributions to this year's awards are Korpelarörelsen, Vanhävd, Jordfäst and Euphrosyne in the Clandestine Cut category.

I feel like a grinch saying that I found Euphrosyne's EP before Nikarg passed on your recommendation to me... but it just shows we have good taste, and I can absolutely thank you for recommending Ryth, Empire Springs, Animårum, Besna and Null to me last year, several of which I reviewed and many of which would have had chances to be nominated in less fiercely competitive categories...

Speaking of which, like with 2021, I've spent a year ruminating on these categories and seeing potential nominees fade from contention as the final rosters revealed themselves, and developing my own thoughts on each field (and if anyone wants to discuss why album X or Y was in field A instead of B or no field at all, I'm happy to provide my own perspective on it) - apologies for the big block of text, there's a lot of categories:

---

Alt - suffered a bit from Trivium, Soen, Wheel, Gojira and Converge/Chelsea Wolfe all having their turn in 2021; I don't think this year is as strong, but it's a solid roster, and my own shoutout is to Origin Of Escape, for those of a more melodic/melancholic persuasion

Ambient - unfortunately, I imagine name recogntion will cause a fairly unremarkable Blood Incantation EP to run away with what is a very solid field IMO - I have to decide who of Wyatt E and Sum Of R to go for

Avant-garde - this cat peaked in 2020 with Thy Catafalque vs. Oranssi Pazuzu vs. Imperial Triumphant - I'm not as enamoured with this year's line-up, but Ode And Elegy is a remarkable record, and Ashenspire and Katharos XIII deserve some attention too

Black - 2019 and 2020 were so strong for this category; this is now the second year that I've been less impressed by, but we still have some decent albums here from big and less big names

Death - this was absolutely stacked; Inanna, Aeviterne, Dysgnostic and Veilburner all deserved nominations, and I can understand fans of Autopsy, Bloodbath and Behemoth being disappointed too, but while there's records here I don't really gel will, there's no weak link really. For me, it's the excellence of Hath vs my infatuation for Mathan that I have to decide between

Djent - very much 'my' category in terms of genre preferences amongst the MSA crew, I actually reviewed more of this year's nominees but was more taken by last year's roster; there's a lot of big names this time around, but I struggled to unearth any hidden gems of the likes of Cyderian Son/Heliocentric/Karmanjakah/Monosphere this year, with Feather Mountain the closest we got. I have to go for Rolo Tomassi here tbh, a class above, even if I'm happy to see Monuments getting back on track

Doom - not my category really, but a solid bunch, and The Nest is a nice 'bonus' Wolvennest effort

Ex doom - once again a bit more impressive than the regular doom category, there's some solid stuff here amongst the likes of Ego Depths, Et Moriemur, Dream Unending and Grand Harvest

Ex prog - an absolutely stacked category this year; Fallujah, Ashbreather and Anomaly deserved to be nominated, but I don't know who in favour of. It feels like there's a bunch of potential winners between Allegaeon, An Abstract Illusion, Persefone and Tomarum

Folk - Amorphis finally found a home outside of heavy/melodic; my own love of them should outweigh all, but I'll have to weigh it up against the charm of Iomair and the impressive effort from Vanaheim

Gothic - like alt, having Draconian, Paradise Lost, Swallow The Sun, Moonspell and Tribulation having their 'go' in the last 2 years drew away some of the potential talent; I'm not sure what to go for here

Grindcore - normally a category I really don't care for, I actually like quite a few of this year's bunch, particularly Helpless, Teethgrinder and Tulip

Hard Rock - sometimes there's one album in here that I'm taken with (e.g. Fierce Deity last year), but this year, this is one that dwells outside of my tastes

X-core - like usual, this category mostly deviates from my own preferences within this field of music, but Lorna Shore, Fit For An Autopsy and Hexis are all ones I'm partial to

Heavy - removing the 'melodic' proviso for Amorphis/Esa Holopainen renders this again beyond my preferences, but shout out to Blizzard Hunter and their solid record

Industrial - often the hardest to fill, I think we've got a pretty solid bunch here between Final Light, The Algorithm, Author & Punisher and Portal-Hex

Melodeath - I don't think it's unfair to say that having Be'lakor, Carcass, At The Gates,In Mourning, Aephanemer, Duskmourn, Omnium Gatherum, Inferi and Insomnium putting out records last year left the field depleted this time around; I reckon the top 7 in 2021 could landslide this category, but with the few remaining big names putting out some forgettable releases (Amon Amarth, Arch Enemy), we've dug into some decent underground efforts

Meloblack - nothing I love here, but pretty solid roster I reckon, particularly with Grima putting out their best effort yet

Metalgaze - normally very much a 6.5-7.5 field for me, Kardashev really bring something different to the table this time

Post-metal - another year, another monstruous line-up; I think fewer big names missed this cut this time, but the actual nominees are again very competitive, particularly Conjurer, Psychonaut, Panzerfaust and White Ward

Power - I reviewed 3 of these, which is at least 2 more than usual for power metal entries; I think this is a really strong field, with Blind Guardian and Stratovarius bringing their A-game and Gladenfold pulling out a banger

Prog - again, what a great field - a few I wish had made it missed out, but my big 3 preferences (Disillusion, Path Of Might and Playgrounded) all made it, so now I have a tough choice

Sludge - of all the categories I'm properly invested in, this probably had fewest of my top picks, but at least Kurokuma, Pyrithe and Patroness got well-deserved nominations

Stoner - I positively reviewed 7 of these, and liked My Sleeping Karma and Ufommamut a lot too, so no complaints here; I probably have to go for Elder, but really dig Druids and Humanotone too

Symphonic - some really strong albums here, particularly Shadow Of Intent; intrigued to see how 2021's runaway winner Epica competes with frequent winners Septicflesh this year

Thrash - not my genre at all, but I think we've covered a lot of bases with some very respectable albums here

and last but not least,

Clandestine Cuts - I hope these nominees get the appreciation they deserve; I think this is our strongest field yet, and I want to champion especially Euphrosyne and Laere, but also Gob Ribbons and Dornen

---

Overall, I think 2022's been a very solid year for metal, and I hope people find some new favourites and hidden gems amongst the various albums we've nominated here!

After a whole day of initial browsing through all the different categories, here are my first observations, thoughts and personal opinions:

* Zeal & Ardor is a given in alternative.

* I don't care much for the ambient/drone/noise category but Menace Ruine was at least a bit interesting but will probably not lay a vote here.

* Going with my own discovery in avantgarde, Korpelarörelsen, but my guess is that Imperial Triumphant will win this category.

* For me Gaerea doesn't really have any competition in black but I would've liked to see Non Est Deus' Impious nominated as it was the second best black metal album of last year. Te Ruki deserves an honorable mention because a French Polynesian black metal album is a first and well worth checking out.

* Death metal without Bloodbath feels kinda wrong even though I went with Psycroptic. Funny enough I rated Bloodbath a 9 and Psycroptic an 8 upon releases.

* Djent/math is a no brainer. Going with my hometown fellows Meshuggah.

* How Frayle wasn't nominated in doom is a mystery. Runner ups are Early Moods and The Nest.

* For extreme doom, again I'll go with my own find, Vanhävd, but it was a close call between them and Et Moriemur.

* Extreme progressive is just ridiculous! Most of my favourite albums of last year resides in this category including my AOTY, Allegaeon's Damnum.

* I have yet to decide in folk/pagan/viking but i know it's NOT gonna be Amorphis.

* Sakis Tolis is the obvious winner in gothic but I'm leaning towards Deathwhite.

* Grindcore is a big swing and a miss for me. Not even gonna check out the nominees.

* Since I'm 42 years old and have two kids I probably should go with "dad rock" here and vote for Hällas who did a very good album indeed. Ghost released an underwhelming album for the first time and I'm slightly surprised that Impera got nominated. Ultimately my vote went to Hoaxed's Two Shadows. Been spinning that album a lot!

* I kinda have outgrown metalcore/hardcore/deathcore except for (older) Whitechapel and (older) Caliban. Although Portuguese Downfall Of Mankind and Slovenian Within Destruction released decent deathcore albums. Might write one of them in.

* I you like Iron Maiden you probably gonna like the Greeks in Stygian Oath too. Might be worth a write-in in heavy/traditional. If going for one of the nominees I would choose between Nite and Maule.

* Final Light should win industrial/cyber/electronic but who can really compete with Rammstein.

* Melodeath/extreme power/gothenburg is another stacked category with great releases but ultimately The Halo Effect takes the cake. They're everything In Flames aren't anymore even though we wish they were.

* I was pretty sure that nikarg would've gotten Ysyry Mollvün a nomination in melodic black but I was apparently wrong. Either way I went with Jordfäst here but could as well have picked Lune, In Aphelion or Blackbraid. Great nominations overall.

* Don't really know if you can call Kardashev metalgaze but they still got my vote.

* Post-metal would've been another impossible to pick category if it wasn't for Cult Of Luna. Again going with my hometown fellows and in all honesty they could release an actual turd and they would still get my vote. Yes, I'm biased but luckily Cult Of Luna kicks ass so I'm getting away with it.

* Power metal: Big pass. Wait! Did ABBA release their album last year?

* Need to backtrack to other releases outside of the nominees in progressive before making a decision.

* Sludge will most likely go to Celeste. Chat Pile was good too.

* Been listening to very little stoner in the last couple of years but I like King Buffalo and Somali Yacht Club (gotta love that band name btw).

* My vote in symphonic goes to Aeternam because I really like everything that implements oriental/middle eastern instrumentation. Also bold move to put Shadow Of Intent here but we all know that Septicflesh is gonna win by default.

* We also know Kreator is gonna win thrash/speed but I hope Goatwhore (no, I'm not gonna wear that band merch) or Deströyer 666 wins this one since Havok didn't release an album last year.

* In clandestine cuts Euphrosyne is a big fish swimming with small fry. But Laere, Night Of The Vampire and Telesterion are bands I'll definitely keep an eye on for future releases.

This sums up my first thoughts on this year's MSA. I could go on but I tried really hard to keep it shorter than musclassia

Kind of surprised to not see Cradle of Filth in here, unless I happened to miss them. I'm sure they'll garner quite a few write-ins, but those will likely be spread out across Melodic Black Metal, Gothic Metal, and Symphonic Metal.

And which Cradle Of Filth album were we supposed to nominate? 2021's Existence Is Futile ?

They did in fact garner write-ins spread across melodic black, black, gothic and symphonic metal last year; however, since they did not release an album in 2022, they weren't really in the discussion to be nominated

I thought I had a highly productive music-listening year in 2022. How wrong I was - I haven't heard most of these records! My poor ears are in for some more abuse in February... I haven't listened to any grindcore in years, so that should be interesting.

Isn't this a bit of a dodgy case of vote influencing

This is not the Oscars. Just pointing out my favourites. Everyone is free to vote as they like.
