Grammy Awards - Best Metal Performance Nominations

Yesterday, nominations for the 52nd annual Grammy Awards were announced by The Recording Academy. Here are the nominees for Best Metal Performance:

Judas Priest - "Dissident Aggressor" (from A Touch of Evil ? Live)
Lamb Of God - "Set to Fail" (from Wrath)
Megadeth - "Head Crusher" (from Endgame)
Ministry - "Señor Peligro" (from Adios...)
Slayer - "Hate Worldwide" (from World Painted Blood)

Except for Slayer, who already won 2 Grammys, none of the bands have won before. Megadeth were already nominated 8 times without a win (together with Metallica, the band who has been nominated the most in this category since its introduction in 1989), Ministry were already nominated 6 times and Judas Priest already had 4 nominations without a win. Lamb of God were previously nominated once, in 2007.

Metallica's "Unforgiven III" is nominated in the Best Hard Rock Performance, together with AC/DC's "War Machine", Alice In Chains' "Check My Brain", Linkin Park's "What I've Done" and Nickelback's "Burn It to the Ground". AC/DC is also nominated for Best Rock Album, while Steve Vai is up for a Best Rock Instrumental Performance award.

Awards will be handed out on January 31, 2010 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles and will air on CBS television. A full list of all nominees can be found here.

I'm from the US, and even though I like the majority of the nominees, I agree that there were so many CD's that should have made it on the list but didn't. I personally really enjoyed the new Epica and Nile, along with Mastodon. Although you got to agree that Megadeth and Slayer both released some of there best material in a decade.

why all the bands are somehow classical ? what about some Gothic/Symphonic acts being nominated ? I don't know I don't like the way they choose, but out of those I'd like to see Mustaine getting an award ....

Bah, beat me to it! Even the biggest names that you find primarily within metal would give it such a further scope of variety. Instead they always just choose bands that have either made headways or irrevocably instilled themselves into popular culture as well. Yawn.

Screw the grammies; I can't believe that people take this seriously (well, I can, but you get the idea. It's pathetic). Grammies are meaningless other than someone bragging "look at the hunk of gold that I got at this one ceremony". If I ever get one (by the way, I don't want to be a popular enough musician to even be nominated for it), I would consider putting it in a kiln and making it into other golden objects, possibly to sell (uless if that's illegal; if it is, then please notify me). The grammy awards are more meaningless than a shovel applied to cement.

Kay, why is a live track nominated for best metal performance? Priest wrote the song like 30 years ago.

But whatever, at least it isn't is bad this year as previous years. They haven't included korn or dragonforce this time, which is good i guess.

Grammy for mainstream not for METAL,,,,why they bother thmesleves any way they don't know nothing about value or quality of music...it 's about value of sales. if it was about quality opeth and agalloch would won long time ago.

And yes we are not in 80's anymore.

I was also surprised LoG's there instead of Mastodon, considering the latter is more directly aligned with a major label (Warner) (right?). Guess it is all about sales

The Swedish grammy awards are much better, although I don't care about it either. But they at least nominate bands such as Opeth and Cult of Luna.

Exactly, that's why I don't care about that one either. But they at least have better nominations.

Laying taste aside, I don't see how that's any different ("better"). Aren't those the parallels for biggest influences/sales over the years in popular "metal" from the country?

Nice to look over the full list and see some highlights that may deserve a purchase sometime - I'm happy to see the latest Dave Matthews' Band album get a mention, and Eric Clapton/Steve Winwood live, and Jeff Beck alongside Steve Vai
