I'm sure when you're familiar with the black metal scene, it might have gotten your attention that there is this new blend of black metal going around. Bands like Alcest, Amesoeur and Lifelover who mix black metal with rock music. But what most people don't know, that there was a band in the early/mid' 90s doing this already, named Forgotten Woods. Forgotten Woods are overall considered a black metal band, but imo their music has more Post-Rock elements in it then black metal, infact, the only black metal thing about this band are the lyrics and the high-pitched shrieks. "The Curse of Mankind" is a classic release in the black metal scene and if you didn't hear of this band already, I recommend you to give them a try. All of their stuff is getting re-released since 2005, so it's the best chance to try this band out. The band split up in the late 90s but had a come-back last year, with an album that suprised the entire black metal scene. Fans argue about the new album, because it's actually a very raw black metal album, which differs it a lot from their previous albums. You might check their Metal-Archives Page out, but trust me, screw the description on MA, this band has nothing in common with doom metal at all, it's just not your typical black "metal" band. MySpace : The first two songs are from the new album, which I didn't like at all, the third song is from their EP which had the most black metal influence in it, and the last song "The Velvet Room" is from their masterpiece "The Curse of Mankind".

I got Baklengs Mot Stupet yesterday, which is a boxset that contains As The Wolves Gather, The Curse of Mankind and Sjel Av Nattenby Forgotten Woods and Unlimited Hate by Joyless. I had heard that they were one of the first depressive bm bands, so I checked their Myspace, and I really liked "The Velvet Room"so I decided to order Baklengs Mot Stupet. I haven't gotten around to listening it yet, but when I've done so I'll post my thoughts.

Post Rock????????? what can be found of POST-ROCK in Forgotten Woods? Their fist stuff is plain black/doom, "Race Of Cain" is a more original album, black metal with some hard rock and punk influences, but definately not post-rock. I had never get into their earlier stuff, but Race Of Cain is a brilliant album. I had its cover in my avatar for a while when it was released.

@Southern Wind: As I already mentioned, Race of Cain is a pure black metal album. Explain me what exactly about this band is doomish in anyway (I'm talking about the PRE-Race of Cain stuff!) ? I mean, do you know the definition of post-rock? FW have more rock influence in their music as metal, just like their side-band Joyless. Same for Lifelover and Ameseuors, I don't consider any of these bands metal.

Not really a fan of the band itself, but I love their procreations (Lifelover for example.)

About the post-rock stuff, I think you was refering to Race Of Cain, in that case you mean previous stuff I would have to check again but I doubt you'll right anyway... at least in Race Of Cain there's nothing like post-rock. About the definition of post-rock, the most widely accepted is "the use of rock elements and isntrumentation for non-rock purposes". Once again, I don't know well the previous stuff, but in RoC I hear a typical voice, typical riffing, typical drumming so I wouldn't call it post-rock.

Race Of Cain has nothing to do with Post-Rock, and I never claimed something like that. I recommend you to listen to "The Curse of Mankind" doubtless their best work. The opening track is fast, as we know it from black metal, but the rest is not doomish or something like that, it's in an standart rock speed. And that's what makes Forgotten Woods Post-Rock/Black Metal in my opinion, they're a black metal band, but use almost only rock elements, and that's exactly what that statement you've posted says post-rock is about.

Account deleted Written by [user id=26778] on 09.01.2008 at 22:17 Well, that definition of post-rock I gave you understands rock as including all its derivations (metal, punk etc), not only hard rock, so using "rock" elements to create a black metal band wouldn't make it post-rock, because black metal is still... rock. Anyway, I'll download The Curse Of Mankind.

Account deleted Written by [user id=5080] on 09.01.2008 at 22:22 what i meant or tried to say is, that they sound like a rock band trying to play black metal, imagine what i'm trying to say? when i heard forgotten woods' early stuff, i didn't hear metal. i don't consider forgotten woods metal, they write about winter, depression and other black metal releated stuff and have the same vocals like most black metal bands, but forgotten woods were always a rock band for me, call it black rock, depressive rock, i don't care, nor do i know how this genre is called that lifelover and all of this new wave of bm bands are playing, it's just more rock then metal imho.

Decent band, absolutely no way this is post-rock related, I don't even hear much rock in it. Sounds like pretty typical black metal with some doomish elements. Written by [user id=26778] on 09.01.2008 at 22:28 That makes me think of Venom more than this stuff.

Well, I followed Fucked Upstair's advise and downloaded The Curse Of Mankind, and I have to say it's an amazing album, what a cool vocal work! But I think it actually has a lot of doom. It is fast, but what the fuck, it throws DOOM upon the listener and that's what matters Listening to this album I also realize that those assholes of Deinonychus had spent a whole career trying to sound like Forgotten Woods.

But besides that assholes? why do you consider them assholes? and secondly Deinonychus is more or eless purely Marco's brainchild although he has some musicians help him out in the studio while recording and live, but that's it.
