Just heard this band, both their albums Bath and Leaving Your Body Map and wow, I'm quite impressed. This band plays some sort of Avant-Garde / Jazz / Progressive Metal. They have some death growls, and use some instruments like the trumpet and clarinet. They released 3 albums and disbanded, later to be reformed as Kayo Dot (but now only remains the frontman from Maudlin Of The Well). Also, I was quite surprised this band wasn't featured on the page, since there are some other bizarre bands out there, and I don't see anything that could make this band not a fine addition to the page. Recomended to all those that like Avant-garde music/metal.

No comments for this spectacular band? Truly a band of genius (when they were Maudlin, their Kayo Dot stuff isn't so good, first album withstanding). Bath is the album I'm most familiar with and it really did blow me away first time through. Such a mix of styles most notably death/grind, ambient, post-rock and some jazz if I remember rightly. You wouldn't think a band could combine such contrastng styles and still make it work but they did. Very atmospheric and quite original too.

I gave both Maudlin Of the Well and Kayo Dot a listen - they are ok . But not quite right for my taste I am sorry to say. The music seems to wander around and get nowhere .

Best 2009 albums till now. It has very few to do with metal though, so open your mind or don't listen to it.

I put in what I could to add their other two albums, and I also tried what I could to give them a biography and a more detailed profile, but I don't have any good info on the members and I'm pretty sure other things will need cleaning up. All this is, of course, assuming I didn't bungle everything so nicely that the admins won't let the changes I've tried to make through. I'm a wee bit new here, and I'm too used to ProgArchives type formatting... Great band, though. And Kayo Dot seems to be missing from this site. I'm sure that's on its way to being rectified, anyways.

I heard that they try to "Find" music insted of making music, and they use lucid dreaming to do that

Yeah, lol, who else thinks the whole lucid dreams is a euphemism for: we do drugs and write our music while we're high. But yeah, these guys are brilliant. Kayo Dot kick ass as well/

The release of this year is pretty solid. The music and styles flow nicely, I don't hear any forced moments when trying to combine the different genres. And the name of the songs are pretty long and good.

My Fruit Psychobells...A Seed Combustible is a very overlooked album I think, since the other ones are more well-known. It is awesome though, but the production took me a bit to get used to because it's less clean than the later stuff. The harsh vocals are the best out of all their albums on that one.

Their newest album explores a totally different angle, it's more in the progressive/experimental/art rock department imo, but it's still is a nice experience to listen to this album, the variety of the instruments and the way the music flows is extremely soothing. An album not be overlooked even though I still prefer their older albums.

23.01.2010 - 18:56 Written by Liquid on 23.06.2009 at 03:58 ProgArchives is great, the site I use in conjunction with Metal Storm to discover and review music. But just like PA, there are many bands that the staff doesn't agree should be here. I believe Kayo Dot has been blacklisted as far as band suggestions go for not being metal... but at least we have maudlin of the Well.

Kayo dot should totally be on here. Distorted guitar and Death growls and screaming? sounds metal to me.

What in the world is going on with their profile... first maudlin of the Well is correct and visible, now they are incorrectly combined as Kayo Dot and invisible?

I know... well technically they are the same band, but they have a completely different style nowadays, and their new album especially, has no metal whatsoever on it. Choirs of the eyes and gemini tripod have metal in them, but coyote doesnt at all.

There are a lot of bands that can fuse genres...it's not the seemingly magical feat some may think...there are many bands who think that their tendency to jump from, say, death metal to electronica-tinged blues or something makes them amazing...it doesnt, just eclectic...but these cats make their own unique stew out of it...

I've listened to their album Bath. It was decent, but for some reason it couldn't really capture my interest, which is odd, since I normally love unusual and avant-garde metal. I'll have to give it another listen and see if I can appreciate it more.

17.09.2010 - 23:37 Written by jacob15728 on 17.09.2010 at 22:33 motW is one of the more difficult bands to get into... I still haven't fully embraced Bath except for the tracks Girl With A Watering Can and Birth Pains Of Astral Projection. Leaving Your Body Map may be a better place to start, it's definitely much more interesting and accessible. Or maybe even Part The Second, less metal but great nonetheless.

Apparently I had a better attention span back in '08. I haven't really approached this band much in recent times although I know they're something quite special. Must make more effort.
