Actually the other three ballads you did not mention - Mama Said, Unforgiven II and Low Man's Lyric are good songs IMO, deserved to be mentioned.

Damn, this is a hard choice between "One" and "Fade to Black" for me. One is really deep, but it strays away from the classic idea of what a ballad is. I think Fade to black is alot more depressing, and that's a song I listen to ALOT when I feel upset about something. So, I dunno, I guess my vote goes to Fade to Black.
Life it seems, will fade away
Drifting further every day
Getting lost within myself
Nothing matters no one else
I have lost the will to live
Simply nothing more to give
There is nothing more for me
Need the end to set me free

So many people voted for Fade To Black However the best one to me is The Unforgiven, probably one of the first Metallica songs i listened to, it was 5 years ago but now the impression to this song is still the same : sorrowful and sombre

I think I'm going to agree that "Fade To Black" is their top ballad. Sandwiched right in the middle of "Ride..." it carries such great melancholic energy. I think part of the reason I love this song so much is that it comes right after "For Whom the Bell Tolls," which usually puts me in a good mood. ...Tooo Laaate

between nothing else matters and fade to black i choose fade, it's one of the most easily recognisable songs in their discography, and it does have true emotional value(james wrote the song out of sadness after his equipment was stolen, imo that's not a great reason for suicidal lyrics but whatever)

Nothing Else Matters probably because it's so damn beautiful and it was one of the ballads which got me into Metal. I also love The Unforgiven II which is left out by some reason. Same with Mama Said, one of Hetfield's most emotional moments I'd say.

Fade to Black - all in all, not just the best ballad but best Metallica's song ever. It has great lyrics, (for years I was convincewd they were written by Mustaine) and the music is great too. Closely followed by One.

Fade To Black is one of my favourite metal ballads in general. No matter how much I hear that song, I never get sick of it or start liking it less. It's one of those songs that whenever it plays, I pay close attention to everything going on in the song and sort of ignore everything else around me.
Welcome Home (Sanitarium) is also great, but Fade To Black gets my vote.

Agree, The Unforgiven is more depressive and beautiful than other Metallica songs. IMO this song makes me feel "doom", even its not a doom song, but thats why make it more unique.

Fade to black is the most emotional, one is the most technical/metal.
Tough one.
I pick Fade to Black, since there isn't a single second where it lets up in intensity.

Screw it, if those two are not ballads, FtB is not either, cause they use distorsion in all those three.
I agree that One is heavier but it's still a ballad.

The definition for a ballad on Dictionary.com is:
1. any light, simple song, esp. one of sentimental or romantic character, having two or more stanzas all sung to the same melody.
2. a simple narrative poem of folk origin, composed in short stanzas and adapted for singing.
3. any poem written in similar style.
4. the music for a ballad.
5. a sentimental or romantic popular song.
Now, to me, One does not fit this category. You might think it's an epic song, or a classic, but a romantic or sentimental song it certainly is not. A light simple song it also certainly is not.
