Immortal - Too Tr00 For Spellemann Award Nomination

Norwegian black metal squad Immortal have announced their latest album All Shall Fall was nominated for this year's "Spellemannsprisen" in Norway. The Spellemann Awards are the Norwegian equivalent of the US Grammy Awards.

The band didn't want to be part of that and rejected the nomination.

Rumor on the streets of the grim and frostbitten kingdom has it, the band stated their "thanks, but no thanks" because the Spellemann Awards are chosen by a jury and not by the fans... So technically their participation for the upcoming Metal Storm Awards is not at stake here (that is, if they are nominated of course ). Spicy detail: it was the band's label that entered the band for the Spellemann.

Other nominees for "best metal album" are Code (Resplendent Grotesque), The Cumshots (A Life Less Necessary) and Årabrot (The Brother Seed). The awards are presented on March 6th 2010.

I can understand how they are thinking, but like it matters? Accept the damn prize and then leave.

There's a tiny detail that makes significance in meaning between the price and the prize.

I.

Me neither.. The word, cumshots is blocked in my country.. But anyway I guess The Cumshots were the band the one that a couple had sex during their live performance..

That's odd. After finding an Immortal album in a hot topic a month ago or so I assumed they would totally go for something like this.

Think about it. It means something to your fans if you go up and accept the award and thank your fans for putting you in that position. Unless you think all your fans are misanthropic daylight-hating goblins with fantasies of raping priests. Which by this point in your career, Immortal, they are not. Sorry to be the ones to break it to you, but there are probably people out there who listen to you who don't even own a leather jacket! Shit!

Awards are just a bullshit way for the music industry to pat each other on the back, the only award a band should need is a room full of us (the fans) screaming lyrics at the top of our lungs and throwing up the the horns!

Completely respectable decision... Any real metal band should avoid those mainstream awards... so superficial and phoney. I think the title of this article is perfect, too tr00 for that crap!

Although I haven't checked this band out yet, I think this is a very respectable decision. These types of award programs usually suck. It's nice to know that these awards don't have ultimate say.

Agreed. That's what I said on this matter on another board (it was concerning Keep Of Kalessin and their participation to Eurovision):

"Metal bands should stay away from such contests as if it were a plague.
Why playing this 'harlot game' which implies showing yourself not as you are, only to please the mainstream masses who can't appreciate metal music in its pure uncompromising form?
A real metal band most likely won't make more money by doing it. The only thing they will achieve is destroying their musical integrity. From my point of view, they have much more to loose than to gain.

In a case such as this one, bands don't write music for themselves but to please non-metal fans. They bow down before people who don't care for the music they write normally.
Metal bands should not give a fuck at whatever the mainstream masses can think of them. They should not try to gain mainstream acceptance. Metal is not about gaining recognition from the average citizen who dislikes metal music."

Haha. Metal musicians are not showmen? That's the funniest thing I've read in a while - metal musicians like Immortal are all about the show. And this is anoter showman's stunt, way more "superficial and phoney" than actually going there.

I think it's quite fine they decide this way. But it's embarassing to see the fans cheer like this was some act of true heroism. I wish metalheads, musicians and fans alike, pulled their heads out of their arses.

Personally, I think that they should have accepted it in full black metal gear. Spikes, leather, corpse paint. The whole deal. Then, Abbath could have done his acceptance speech using his distinct croaking voice. That, would have been far more metal than just rejecting the award.

Oh, and they could do some fire-breathing at the end.

All this talk about should haves and they did it for us fans or this is what I reckon they should have done...

They did what they wanted to, which to me is what metal is about, freedom of speech, choice and expression. So fuck it, go Immortal for doing what they want and choosing how they want to be recognised.

Anyways, it's funny how they allow themselves to be featured in guitar world and shit like that but they don't want to do this haha.
