Dez Fafara has done just about everything he can with Devildriver in order to separate his name from Coal Chamber. For those of you who aren't aware, that was his nu metal project that lasted about a decade before meeting its end in 2003, and death metal purists have been riding this guy ever since. Not that this is a death metal band. Devildriver are a heavily groove-influenced thrash/metalcore-ish outfit. Ya, kinda hard to pigeonhole, but it's easier than trying to come up with some new genre.

Just finished listening to this, and was thoroughly impressed, and pleasantly surprised! xD It's a tightly wound, whirling dervish of an album with sonically devestating songs (overall) and stellar musicianship. Definitely very far removed from what Dez used to do in his days with Coal Chamber. lol

True, but "Beast" is a bit more extreme overall than any of their previous albums. More death metal in tone definitely. There is still melody, but it's used much more sparingly, and the riffing is very upfront and in your face. Its also very intricate at times. Ive always liked Devildriver, though they've definitely gone up a gear or two with this one! xD

It's a good album, but nothing more...in my opinion. I was hoping to use words like "great" or "awesome" but unfortunately I can't. I'm sure they will draw big crowds to their shows, and they'll surely give the paying kids their moneys worth. 7/10 is my grade.

It's heavy and agressive, but in the end, nothing really stands out.

This is just...ugh. I tried, but it really didn't leave any mark on me whatsoever. Better than Pray for Villains though.

I'd say they're a mix of groove/thrash and metalcore - definitely metal though. Just, in my opinion, not good this time around.

I felt the same on my first go, but by the third time I think it's really good not that anyone is forcing you to like it anyway!

I have to say this is one of those surprisingly good albums...sort of. The first half of the album just feels uturly directionless and seems to be to me at least that they are trying to portray some kind of chaos by throwing in these almost advantegardesque guitar leads which just seem very unconnected with anything else. This wouldn't be so bad if they were trying to consistently do this, but sinstead seem confused whether they want to be experimental, heavy, loud, or catchy and it just comes off as a big mess. Although "Shitlist" does show what the second half of the album is going to be like it isn't really the greatest song.
However just when the album seems to be outliving its welcome "Black Soul Choir" pops up. Surpsingly this is a cover but if I was given a side by side listen to this and the orignal without knowing one is a cover, I just wouldn't be able to tell the difference. The rest of the album from this point is actually pretty good and surprisingly epic for Devildriver at times. The ambitious guitar leads from before actually work in these songs, although they still are not perfect.
It seems Dez has returned to his formula of Devildriver's debut and seems to just repeating the same phrase over and over like he is Max Calvera. Surprisingly it doesn't really ruin any of the songs (especially the better ones) but it is pretty notable and kind of detracts from the album in an after-thought kind of way.
However this albums ambition (as Devildriver seems to consistently show in each album) seems to be a manifestation of Dez's desire to break his music away from popular, if not critically lauded genres and be seen as something serious.

Late response, but no. Groove metal is a thrash sub-genre, which places emphasis on - you guessed it - groove. It's all about the riffs.

Pantera's "Walk" and Lamb of God's "Hourglass" are good examples of groove metal.
