Two years have gone by, Halloween is approaching; which can only mean one thing: Cradle Of Filth is releasing a new album.

The Manticore And Other Horrors marks the tenth studio album of the symphonic black, gone extreme or extreme gothic metal ? gee, I am going to stop while I am ahead. I seriously can't keep up with all those different sub genres in today's music.

Don't agree, Darkly Darkly Venus Aversa is a good album tho I like Godspeed a lot more. I wonder how their next album will sound

Ya well they can say whatever they want about returning to their roots, it doesn't mean the album will be any good.

Metallica's "return" with Death Magnetic is more than proof of that.

I highly doubt they'll go back to playing boring, lo-fi death metal

Yeah, well, that's what they said about Darkly, Darkly. Turns out that was anything other than returning to the roots.

Last one was so boring and absolutely awful! it was huge disappointment after Godspeed... which is their best since Midian imo...so I kind off lost interest in this new one, but after watching their performance at Wacken this year, I really do hope they can do it right again....Dani has his scream back on track and this new girl knows how to handle vocals/keyboards...

It's good. But that's it. As I've said earlier: today's Cradle just doesn't do it for me anymore. It's fine, there's some great moments. But I feel they've done the best they can, years ago.

Great album, and the best work they have done since the midian days. People will hate it, and people will love it (as always with a cradle release..). I love it though!

This is a straightforward COF album without all of the 'Theatricals'. It hard not to compare every new COF release with their old material, but it reminds me of 'Numphetamine with the Guitar melodies and Keyboards and the Heaviness of GodSpeed. COF has delivered another solid record.

This is simply just my opinion, but i do feel as COF has been getting a little too comfortable with their sound. This is like i said a 'Solid release', but i was hoping to have heard something on a another level. COF will always be a 'Love or Hate' group and i still support them after all these years

The Manticore & Other Horrors 7.5 / 10

Holy Shit that band is good. Props for letting people know about them! Seems like all the best sympho black is incredibly underground.

don't get me wrong, its fun to listen to it, listenable and enjoyable like all COF albums (except Thornography :/ ), but nothing special about it... I think that Godspeed was better than Manticore.

That's because as soon as a Symphonic BM band gets some popularity it turns into sell out not-so-black metal with cheesy keyboards.

Nothing new on this album, i gave it few spins and nothing.
Don't know why but listening gave me the impression i was still listening Darkly, Darkly Venus Aversa, the same 'mood'.
Godspeed was much better

The first three tracks are absolutely brilliantly but for me it stagnates a little from that point. Musicianship here though is pretty damn solid for the most part.

The biggest problem with this is that it doesn't offer anything new (with the tiny exception of Dani's odd screams). The melodies and styles of Nymphe-Thorno (punk 'n thrash influences to this album come from there) fused with the ?karoupka era's always-the-same drumming + Dani's spitting routines = you pretty much get Manticore. Okey, that would be decent, but the songwriting (and Album-Writing!) is just too one-dimensional, predictable, lacking almost all the rainbows of emotions. Where are the details? Where's the fun?

Completely agree man. Everything up until Venus I've at least casually enjoyed(if not loved) because they always managed to expand, explore and evolve their sound, whether subtly or drastically.

But this album, along with Venus, is stagnant creatively and nothing more than a watered down rehash of previous releases. Hopefully with a break between albums atm they'll be able to bring something fresh to the table.

The production is OK, similar to the other albums around this time in the discography. The problem is that the songs are just... Inseparable. There is nothing that really stands out. And Dani's voice does leave a lot to wish for. Which is weird, because before and after this album, there were no big problems...

I don't even know which album is worst - this or "Thornography". They're both very bad. Mainly guitars and drums with less keyboards and melody. Very forgetable. Listened several times, but still can't remember a single song. Disappointing work for sure.
