There used to be a similar topic in the old forum which I thought was really good. So many polls with different lists of bands are around these days and just wanted to make a topic which will encompass almost all bands. The idea is to list out the following: 1. Top three Black Metal bands 2. Top three Black Metal albums 3. Top three Black Metal songs 4. Top three Black Metal vocalists 5. Top three Black Metal guitarists 6. Top three Black Metal bands in terms of lyrics 7. Top three Black Metal drummers If possible explain your choices and try to be original with your list. If someone else's list is pretty much what your's would be you may state that without actually spamming. I've kept it down to top three for a reason and that's to ensure that people don't go overboard with their posts. Hence please ensure that you follow the guidelines of the topic. Having said that, get posting all Edit: changed the bassist section into Lyrics

Well as for my list, this would be it 1. Top three Black Metal bands a.Darkthrone This band has been just amazing over the years and I've never got tired of them. What can I say, these guys are legends. b.Mayhem One of the most controvercial and insane bands ever to grace this genre, I had to include them. Their old stuff was just so amazing and so different and unique compared to anyone of their time. c.Aetherius Obscuritas I included this band in the list mainly because I thought I should include one of the bands which I listen to these days. They are one of the few bands which still produce brilliantly composed albums which remind me of old Burzum and Darkthrone. 2. Top three Black Metal albums a.Darkthrone - Under a Funeral Moon This is one of those albums for the ages and really defined Darkthrone's sound. It was the first album which had that Black Metal groove which was unique. All the other bands that came after this could never really reproduce this sound satisfactorily. b.Ulver - Bergtatt One of those special albums which is a must listen for any Black Metal fan. Its unique with it's melodic serene chants combined with raw old school Black Metal. One of the bands which came with the second wave and was never really apreciated for their work. This one is a masterpiece. c.Mayhem - Deathcrush One of those albums which had poor production but which were brutal and representive of what old Black Metal really was. This album had incredible bass and unique guitars curtesy of the great Euronymous (RIP). Necrolust was such a ground breaking track at that time and many bands have since attempted to use that particular bit at the begining. 3. Top three Black Metal songs a.Ghaalskagg - Skullfuck This is one amazing track which I find very difficult to describe. Of all the fourteen tracks in this album this one stands out to such a brilliant extent. b.Graveland - Blood of Christians on my Sword This track comes from the album Thousand Swords and its one of the ground breaking tracks which led to defining their future style. This is one of the tracks which makes this album stand out. c.Burzum - Lost Wisdom I just had to include something from Burzum in this. Lost Wisdom is off the album Det Som Engang Var. Thought this album is special enough to hold its own, this track is just amazing. Its like owning seven diamonds while finding one which is worth twice the amount. 4. Top three Black Metal vocalists a.Dead One of the most powerful and unique vocalists who gave that killer edge to Mayhem which made them insanely brilliant. RIP to this great musician of a decade and a half back. b.Nocturno Culto Among those vocalists who never changed their vocal style and remained totally necro from begining to the end. So many vocalists have modelled themselves to have vocals like this guy. He was the originator of this style of vocals with some Bathory influence. c.Nattramn This guy's vocals are just simply put insane. He was institutionalized after making "Death.. Pierce Me" with his band Silencer. His vocals are insanely high, screechy and emotional. He's one of the most original vocalists of our times. He also has vocals which are raw and old school style in addition to his high scream-like ones. 5. Top three Black Metal guitarists a.Euronymous Well one of the most original guitarists of the second wave. This guy invented so much and did so much for the genre that it was impossible to exclude him from any guitarist list. RIP. b.Infernus One of my favorite guitarists of all time (check my avatar hehe). This guy was so unique and amazing specially on Gorgoroth's early releases like Pentagram, Antichrist and Under the sign of hell. His riffs were so well timed and executed at just the correct moment to leave a lasting impression on the listener. One of the more underrated guitarists around. I personally base lots of my riffs on what he has done when I practice. c.Nocturno Culto Darkthrone! I had to have this guy in my guitarist list as he was so instrumental to the overall sound of Darkthrone with his riffs. He was the one who originally came up with the dark hypnotic groove sound characteristic of Darkthrone. 6. Top three Black Metal bassists a.Necrobutcher Recently I've been a huge fan of this guy. He's the only surviving member of the original Mayhem and his bass has been just amazing for so long. b.Varg Vikernes Varg has been among the best Bassists from those early days of Burzum. This guy generally does all the instruments quite well but if I have to pick one thing which stands out, its his bass. His work on DMDS combined with his victim Euronymous was just legendary and they were really complementary to each other in that album. c.Skoll Bassist of Ulver and Arcturus, he was really instumental in both bands in terms of providing that raw abrasive sound in adition to the melody. 7. Top three Black Metal drummers a.Frost There are so many sides to Frost. He can be insanely fast or very complicated and innovative. He is without a doubt one of the best drummers ever largely because of this diversity. He gives different bands a different sound and is very vital in terms of creating a specific sound for whichever band he plays for. b.Fenriz One of those drummers for the ages. He is very innovative and original in Darkthrone and his work in some of the other bands he was involved with are also phenomenal. There is little I need to say about him actually. c.Aiwarikiar This guy was once considered by Varg to be the drummer for Burzum when Varg was considering playing live. he played in both Ulver and Valhall. He even does the flute work for Ulver if I remember correctly. Edited to include descriptions.

1. Top three Black Metal bands a. Emperor - Means basicly everything for me when it comes to extreme meta, without theese guys I wouldnt even get intressted in BUYING music, not until I heard Emperor I finnaly got my ass of my chair and thought, damn I really need to support theese guys no matter what. Thanks to theese guys I have quite an intressting CD collection now and it is still growing. I dont need to comment their masterful music. The previous posters already know what I talk about. b. Nokturnal Mortum - Well basicly the band I listen without doubt the most to nowadays, their diverting sound on every album is incredible, yet all releases are so incredibly good. This band just cant fail to impress me in every single way. Well earned position besides Emperor. c. Drudkh - Well Drukdh did just win over burzum by a tiny little advantage. This band means so much to me and their melodies, solos, riffs, drumming, vocals everything is exactly the thing I want with atmospheric black metal... Listening to Autumn Aurora outside in the nature at the end of summer, the arrival of autumn... Is just undescribable. This is what it means to live, the beuty of nature brought to music. 2. Top three Black Metal albums a. In the Nightside Eclipse - Emperor (Anthems is a honorable mention, but to leave variety I exclude it from the list) b. Hunger of Elements - Kataxu, a masterpiece among Symphonic black metal just pure brilliance. Thoose that have not heard it I command thee to listen to it! c. NeChrist - Nokturnal Mortum, well what are you waiting for? Check this album out already.... Its nothing short of brilliance. 3. Top three Black Metal songs a. With Streanght I Burn - Emperor, a song that means very much to me, the lyrics are very inspiering and the song is just to damn good..Best song ever? b. Det Som En Gang Var - Burzum, this song is without doubt Burzums best song ever, just listening to it gives me the chills. c. Below The Tree of Life - Kataxu, infact all songs on this album are as great as this one, It really is amazing! 4. Top three Black Metal vocalists a. Knjaz Varggoth - Nokturnal Mortum, his vocals are really great, and if you have heard the discography of nokturnal mortum you also know that this guy can growl amazingly good in many ways! b. Kvarforth - Shining, this guy has a really groovy voice which fits great with the music Shining does, I doubt it would be as great in any other band though. But in Shining I couldnt even imagine another vocalist.. c. Ihsahn - Emperor, His shrieks AND clean vocals are just incredibly powerfull. 5. Top three Black Metal guitarists a. Ihsahn - Emperor, his guitars written together with samoth is just some of the best stuff ever. b. Roman S. - Drudkh , the guitarwork of Drudkh is never to leave my mind. c. Euronymous - Given to him only because of his incredible importance of the sound of future black metal. 6. Top three Black Metal bassists Bah? The day I hear a good bass player in black metal I will spin 360 degrees and say, wow I actually heard a bassline in black metal. If someone has any suggestions feel free to PM me. Im looking for inspiring bass players within BM. And ofcourse I already know about Carpathian Forest which happens to be the only band I will mention here. 7. Top three Black Metal drummers a. Frost - 1349, his performance with 1349 is incredible.. b. Trym - Emperor, Not the best drumming in the world, but its so nicly done I cant help but to love it. c. Yuri - Drudkh, his drumming is very hypnotic, and the way he almost abuses the cymbals etc... Is just a great add to Drudkh's atmosphere. Well since I still am rather new to the BM swamp... only 1.5 years of experiance, I will ofcourse reserve myself for changes... /Basso

And bass on DMDOS is awesome but I am not sure who played bass on that album, I couldn't remember any bassist I realy like and it would be hipocrisy to write, I like ? he is so awesome... So I left it empty, I think it is better...

None of the answers are in any sort of order. 1. Top three Black Metal bands i) Burzum -- I love that atmosphere. The chilling fuzzy guitars, the slips of melody, the anguished vocals. I like the veracity of the lyrics. (at least the ones I can read in English). ii) Keep Of Kalessin -- They have an epic quality to their music. Although they're one of the more recent bands I believe they stand out a bit. Good whether they have Thebon or Atilla on vocals. iii) Mystic Forest -- Hard to choose between them and Tvangeste really. I like the 'natural' sound they employ. A lot of BM seems forced. Additionally, I like the gothic direction that the moved on to with the later album, with the clean female vocals and such. Exceptional stuff. 2. Top three Black Metal albums i) Burzum ~ Det Som Engang Var -- The paradigm of a Burzum release (see 1. i) above) ii) Arcturus ~ Aspera Hiems Symfonia -- Although I don't consider Arcturus as a black metal band anymore this release was pretty much a black metal one. I love the atmospheric quality utilised here alon with the first manifestations of avant garde that the band would later catapault themselves off. Garm's vocals are perfectly tailored for the music and the keyboards are thick with atmosphere. iii) Satyricon ~ Dark Medieval Times -- This album is single handedly responsible for the whole medieval black metal sound and no band in my opinon has revamped it and made it sound better. A lot of the local bands seem to be completely ripping the style off as well. Satyr's vocals are tortured soul-like, Frost drumming is assertive and the keyboards are...atmospheric? 3. Top three Black Metal songs This is tricky so I'm doing current favourites: i) Carpathian Forest ~ Shut Up, There's No Excuse To Live -- This is what black 'n' roll should sound like. Raw, violating and impeding. I love the energy here. Nattefrost's vocals are throat rippers. Tchort's riffing is imense and more than memorable. All in all, this is one intense track. ii) Aura Noir ~ Destructor -- Who would have thought black thrash could be so good? The guitar riffs are excellent and the cool down periods are suitable enough for preparing the listener for the final onslaught. Really reminiscent of old school thrash metal and the clean clear production is favourable here. iii) Mayhem ~ Dark Night Of The Soul -- I love the sinister tone. I love the way this song changes throughout. Necrobutcher's bass sounds nicely sinister at the beginning and Maniac's vocals sound rather 'honest' seeing as they lack consistancy. The highlight of this song for me is Hellhammer's drumming though. Really fast and then all typical post-black metal-y. 4. Top three Black Metal vocalists i) Varg Vikernes (Burzum) -- Excellent tortured soul style vocals. They draw the listener in. Very emotive, rather than random barking. I think I'm a bit more partial to screeches than regular growling. ii) Protector/Silenius (Summoning) -- Two vocalist here but I love both styles. They have a dreamy quality to them at times. The screeches really take you away when you get imersed in them. iii) Nattefrost (Carpathian Forest) -- I just really like the rawness and severity of his vocals. So reckless which is perfect for Carpathian Forest. His growls get so high at times you can imagine his throat bleeding. 5. Top three Black Metal guitarists i) Blasphemer (Mayhem/Aura Noir) -- Yeah, I like his Mayhem work but his Aura Noir stuff is excellent. So catchy and cleanly executed. ii) Varg Vikernes (Burzum) -- His Burzum work is so simple but retains an ambient quality, very complimentary with his vocals. They're rough and haggard but curiously arcane. iii) Ihsahn (Emperor) -- I can't explain why too well but I really feel his style does Emperor justice, especially on the Anthems album. He gets quite creative with it at times too. 6. Top three Black Metal bassists I don't really think bassists are so decisive in black metal. I can list Necrobutcher (Mayhem) for his contribution to Mayhem's 'Dark Night Of The Soul' track because I think the bass is very much a necessary requirement to make that song sound as sinister as it does. So, X the last two. 7. Top three Black Metal drummers i) Hellhammer (Mayhem/Shining/+ x more projects...) -- I'd say he was the most varied black metal drummer I've heard. His style never gets tiring or boring. He plays more than just black metal too (avant garde, prog, industrial) and variation is excellent. One of the best metal drummers let alone BM ones. ii) Vyl (Keep Of Kalessin) -- He can go very very speedy. I believe he wants to try and break some kind of speed record? Don't know if he did it. But on Armada the lastest KOK release he did an excellent job of adding to that 'war' atmosphere. iii) Cato Bekkefold (Enslaved) -- He plays a sort of proggy bold black metal style. I'm rather keen on it. Don't really know what else to say... That took a while to do. I believe it's a bit empty for my lack of mentioning Bathory and some other black/viking bands, as well as some of the more creative BM bands like Mirrorthrone. If you read this far, I feel sorry for you.

Well I guess some people prefer the old style of Black Metal while others like the newer more varied style with dominant keys and female vocals and stuff.. Somewhere inbetween is probably ideal if you want to follow more recent Black Metal bands as well. PS: explanations are not necessary but prefered I guess.. Its good to see how people look at bands and their reasoning as to why they made it to the top 3.. @Daru Jericho, yeah Quorthon doesn't seem to have made it anywhere.. Pity..

1. Top three Black Metal bands: *Darkthrone: Best band ever! Their old stuff are perfect! The atmosphere is great, I can't stop listening Transilvanian Hunger, it's so grim! hehehe! *Drudkh: What can I say? I love the atmospheric bands! Their sound is so melancholic and dark, I can't live wihout this band! *Xasthur: Perfect atmosphere too and great vocals by Malefic! This band just blow me away! 2. Top three Black Metal albums: *Darkthrone - Transilvanian Hunger: Dark, melancholic, evil! This is the ultimate Black Metal album! Represents the evolution of an amazing band and, for me, is the perfect definition of the black Metal genre. *Darkthrone - A Blaze in the Northern Sky: It's not as atmospheric as the next albuns, but it's an excelent start. The vocals are great and I just love the lyrics! A Black Metal classic, no doubt about that! *Drudkh - Autumn Aurora: I don't know what to say about this album, the atmosphere is so great that I can't describe what I feel while listening to it. Wonderful album! 3. Top three Black Metal songs *Darkthrone - Transilvanian Hunger: Perfect song! I can't stop listening to it! No band will ever come close to this song, it's a step that only Darkthrone can reach. For me, it's the result of an evolution that started with A Blaze... *Mayhem - Funeral Fog: A classic! The vocals are insane, very different and original, this song represents all the grimness of Black Metal! hehehe! I couldn't find words in english to describe it in a better way.. *Twilight - Beyond Light(Beautiful And Malignant): Very depressive song with sick vocals! If there is a god, he would fall from heaven after listening to this song! 4. Top three Black Metal vocalists *Malefic: This guy has a sick vocal! Very original, it's like a damn Nazgul screaming at your ears! Nothing more terrifying then Malefic singing, his vocals adds a lot to Xasthur's atmosphere. *Attila: He sounds like a demon throwing a curse over you! It's so insane! His vocals added a lot to the power of De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas album! *Nocturno Culto: Always cruel, always evil! A lot of guys tried to copy his style, but it's impossible! 5. Top three Black Metal guitarists *Euronymous: Master Euronymous! He was the mind behind Mayhem's masterpiece De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas! He done a lot for the genre with his great original riffs! King of Black Metal! Hail Euronymous! *Nocturno Culto: What can I say? He made the darkest songs ever! The atmosphere that Darkthrone reaches in their early albuns is made by him, the genius! *Ihsahn: He is so creative! His contribution to Black Metal is so obvious! Just listen to In The Nightside Eclipse and you will see what I'm talking about. It inspired a lot of new bands! Another genius! 6. Top three Black Metal bassists: I can't think in any bassists worth to write in here... 7. Top three Black Metal drummers: *Frost: Do I need to say anything about him? Everybody knows about his skills and how innovative he can be! A drummer that every band wants to have. *Fenriz: He is so great! A Black Metal legend together with Nocturno Culto! What would be of Darkthrone without his creative drumming?? *Jontho: If you want brutality, go talk with this guy. He fucking destroy!!! Speed, brutality, technic, he is a complete drummer! Ragnarok is well served of drummer. That is it! Wow! I think I spend more than a half of hour doing this... hehehe!

What? No lyrics? Top 3 black metal bands: 1. Mercyful Fate I immediately smile once I hear an opening song to any Mercyful Fate album. The lyrics and imagery are frightening, and the vocals and guitars are among my all time favorite among any other genres. Plus, they don't have songs about goddamn snow. 2. Emperor This band is comprised of musical geniuses that made every album a masterpiece. 3. Anaal Nathrakh These guys are very original, especially now in a time where almost everything has been created. Top 3 black metal albums: 1. Mercyful Fate- Melissa Not only does this album have one of my favorite songs, Curse of the Pharaohs, but the whole album was completely revolutionary. 2. Mercyful Fate- Don't Break The Oath This is probably one of the most Satanic albums I've ever heard. The song, The Oath, makes most of the modern-day black metal bands sound pathetic. 3. Destroyer 666- Phoenix Rising hehe I still remember when I first bought this album. I had never heard them, but once I relunctantly played it, I could not believe what I was listening to. All the songs are great and the riffs sound very inspired. Plus, it has the awesome song, I Am The Wargod. Top 3 black metal songs 1. Curse of the Pharaohs- Mercyful Fate 2. Circle of the Tyrants- Celtic Frost 3. Bathory- Pace 'Til Death I have pretty much the same exact feelings for these three songs. The riffs and song structures are catchy as fuck and they always play in my head, especially the choruses. Top 3 black metal vocalists: 1. King Diamond No one I've ever heard can sing in that high of a voice with as much conviction as King Diamond. He has a tremendous range, and somehow doesn't sound girly when he sings that high. 2. Ruoja (Pasi Koskinen)- Ajattara This guy's vocals alone is the major reason why I like this band. They aren't completely black metal, but I figured they're close enough. 3. Shagrath- Dimmu Borgir hmm...I had a hard time choosing between him and Satyr, but I think Shagrath slightly edges him out. When Shagrath plays live, it doesn't even look like he's trying hard at all to produce such strong and raspy vocals. He has a very distinct vocal style which took me a while to enjoy. Top 3 favorite black metal guitarists 1. Hank Shermann/Michael Denner- Mercyful Fate I couldn't decide between the two, so I added them both. Their riffs sound very original and distinct, but still show influences by bands such as Judas Priest and maybe Black Sabbath. 2. Quorthon- Bathory This dude was a musical savant that singlehandedly created some of the best black/thrash ever recorded. 3. Nocturno Culto- Darkthrone I'm not really a fan of this band, but this guy is a tremendously talented guitarist. His riffs are very interesting to listen to, and I especially enjoy the sometimes subtle changes he creates. Top 3 black metal drummers: 1. Nick Barker- Anaal Nathrakh, Old Man's Child, Cradle of Filth, Dimmu Borgir 2. Proscriptor- Absu, Melechesh 3. Horgh- Immortal All three of these drummers are ridiculously fast and could play in any metal band that they choose.
