Dimmu Borgir is, without a doubt, more badass than Cradle of Filth, just because of their album names! And song titles, "Tormentor Of Christian Souls"! Wow!

I've got to say, the first time I heard Dimmu, I was like, Turn it up! And first time I heard Cradle of Filth? Turn it OFF! Maybe this style appeals to some, not me! It sounds more like a brigade of rabid cats are chasing me through some epic valley or something. But Dimmu! They were the first Extreme metal band I actually dug, because some of the death-growl or rasp-scowl mess I was hearing at the time was not very musical. Dimmu is musical, and just because they can't make an album like Enthrone Darkness Triumphant again doesn't make them sellouts, but the stuff they're doing nowadays is still very much music.

I don't wanna compare them, because I like them both. But if they have concert tin he same day and I have only one chance to choose I choose Dimmu!!!

Dimmu Borgir is better than Cradle of Shit these days. Sellout battle though? I thought this was more of "who's the bigger sell out?"

I used to have this picture saved of Dimmu Borgir holding up Draven Shoes, but I can't find it!!!! It's hilarious though because they all look "evil" and are pointing at the shoes.

I cant stand either of these bands. A friend at work is obsessed with both of them. I think COF has one talented instrumentalist... Dani Filth can play the skin flute better than anyone should be able to.

i really like neither of them but well...i prefer dimmu borgir.

for the old stuff cradle were most intersting and bringer of some innovation.
as of today, cradle are getting worst record by record and their new path (last 2 records) are good only when they turn to thrashy like riffage.
Dimmu Borgir started with a rediculous atari-like keybord sound and useless necrosound (don't get me wrong: necrosound has it's own aesthetic, but dimmu version was hilarious); now they are far from BM roots, but an interesting attempt to mix heavy metal with something darker and more atmospheric.

I gave my vote for Cradle, but the problem is that I like both of them. They have different styles and sounds. So, I feel musical attraction for these two great bands. I'm not a great black metal fan, but I like their music and it' doesn't matter to me if they are changing their style to something quite different to black metal.

as a fan of both of them its a hard decision.
but as a long time hard core cradle fan i have to vote cradle, theyre my absolute favourite
cradle is relly going down hill now and as kurt cobain said its better to burn out than to fade away i hope they dont make fools of themselves

Pfffffff... Hard decision, since both are in my metal bands top 10. Cradle was the very first extreme metal band I ever heard and I fell in love with them instantly. I think the track was "Suicide and Other Comforts". Anyway, I hadn't given any attention to metal until then and now I listen to more then 100 different metal bands. But I must admit Cradle is going downhill nowadays, and even though I'm the first to defend them from critic, if I put In Sorte Diaboli and Thornography side by side, Thornography is utterly massacred. I think it is weird to confront Symphonic Black and Extreme Gothic, but as metal bands, I'm sorry CoF, Dimmu is superior.

Sorry dude, but as long as Dani Filth is alive, they can't possibly split up... Remember, at a moment that corse-painted weirdo was the only original member still on board. Allender came back, but this band is Dani's and it won't fall apart as long he's not decided it would. But in a way, maybe it would have been a good thing if Cradle had split up after Midian. Everybody would have remembered it as an exceptionnal shooting star in the biz. Dani could then have started a new sucking band and people wouldn't have forgotten great albums like Dusk and Cruelty & the Beast.

Now, let's make it clear: DIMMU BORGIR = SYMPHONIC BLACK METAL
Oh, and by the way: CRADLE OF FILTH = METAL (I don't know what kind but they're still metal and those who refute that reality should meet a psy as soon as possible)

Cradle of Filth is a guilty pleasure band for me, so therefore i prefer them, but DB isn't bad i think.

Haha this thread made me laugh when i saw it. I think that both these bands are overrated and wanky but i voted Dimmu Borgir because i prefer them to Cradle Of Filth and also i like their Stormblast album but their newer stuff is just

nope i don't agree man !

dimmu borgir's best time was long ago (with For All Tid and Stormblast) but the newer stuff isn't bad (Spellbound, Burn In Hell, Blood Hunger Doctrine, The Serpentine Offering... all great songs)

COF on the other hand... i hate their stuff cause i think the voice doesn't fit with the rest of the music

I voted Dimmu borgir cause firstly i like it, and I love a Vortex voice! and the symphonic sound, espicially for the synth in the last album !

Talking about black metal... Cradle has always argued that they aren't into any fixed metal genres, the genre sort of shifted from one to another from album to album. Yeah

Cradle had been labeled symphonic black metal, extreme gothic metal, melodic black metal, satanic metal, vampyric metal, speed metal, death metal, melodic death metal, horror metal, and dark metal, some of which are regarded by critics and fans alike as entirely apocryphal categories.

Current guitarist Paul Allender said "We were never a black metal band. The only thing that catered to that was the make-up. Even when The Principle of Evil Made Flesh came out — you look at Emperor and Burzum and all that stuff — we didn't sound anything like that. The way that I see it is that we were, and still are now, an extreme metal band."

On April 9 2001, Dani jokingly claimed Cradle's sound as "heavy funk", and in an October 2006 interview stated "We'd rather be known as solely 'Cradle of Filth', I think, than be hampered by stupid genre barriers."

I dont know how somebody goes about saying that band a or band b has sold out. Is it because they have sold over 100,000 albums? Or that they are widely known in the metal community? If you go up to a random person on the street and ask them if they know who Dimmu Borgir or Cradle is im pretty sure the mass consensus is going to be no. Just doesnt make any sense to me.

But as for who I think is the better band I would have to go with Dimmu. They just make better albums in my opinion. Cradle does have its moments though, such as Midian and Dusk and Her Embrace.

I agree with soulreaper. What makes these bands sellouts?? I couldn't name one of either ones albums so it would be hard for me to say which one I liked better. If I had to pick one I would say dimmu borgir only because they were on the first cky DVD I ever saw.

Both bands are far too goofy/cheesey/etc. for me to prefer one over the other. Cradle is more offensive to listen to, yet at the same time this gives them a sort of kitsch value that makes Dimmu bland by comparison. It's a toss up.

Well if you are going by increasingly commercial music I could kind of see that with Cradle but not Dimmu. Also, how can one know the motivations of a band without talking to them. Do they come out and say "oh yeah, we arent liking the way our musical progression is going and we also want to become more commercialized in the eyes of the public"? I havent personally heard that from either. But I dont know. It maybe that when somebody says that the band is "selling out" or not "true" anymore is one persons opinion, but it has to have some sort of logic.

Inference, reasoning, assumptions... With some bands their actions speak loud enough that their motivations are all but irrelevant, some bands receive the benefit of the doubt. But in most cases of declaring "sellout" it's just a case of the fan no longer being able to convince themselves that the band's motivations are pure.

Cradle only had like 3 or 4 songs that I personally liked.. Dimmu has had 2 or 3 albums that I liked.

Cradle is fake Black Metal and Dimmu is real Black Metal.

its a close one for me but i choose cradle of filth. i cant really get into a lot of dimmu's songs but the ones i do like kick ass. i can get into more songs with cradle of filth though. dont really like how they are considered "sellouts" they just want to get more money and a bigger audience and what band hasn't wanted that? it's a damn shame when a band is hated just for that reason

I think most of the time people yell "Sellouts!" when they don't like the direction the band is going or when the band's sound is becoming more accessible or less "true" or something. I think to many metalheads there is a fine line between "progression" and "selling out" and many bands seem to cross that line by progressing too far.

Personally, I prefer Dimmu. They just have more stuff that I actually like.

Cradle of filth are highly overrated, i think dimmu borgir are much better

They are both really good bands, but i think that if you want a heavier black meal band then you should go for Dimmu but COF is a bit softer and more melodic i think

Simple Cradle Of Filth is not Black Metal Its Gothic and Danis voice is amazing
