Finland's Omnium Gatherum is one of those bands currently dominating the metal scene with consistent high-quality efforts. Early 2016 sees their 7th album being released via Life Force Records. In a world where fans dissect every move made on a melodic death record, I have to point out that they elegantly did play it safe by retaining the services of Dan Swanö as a producer. This brings continuity to their discography while allowing them to play within the boundaries of their sound.

Grey Heavens entered the Finnish albums chart at number 2. At least they outsold Coldplay and Adele for one week

I quite like this album. Very "bright" sounding, and I love the keys in some tracks. Some great melodeath here which is hard to come by. Overall I found it to be very enjoyable.

On first listen, I wasn't too impressed. The first three tracks I thought were brilliant, but the rest didn't catch my fancy. But after a second and third listen, I am blown away. Some of the rhythms and melodies are just divine. And the vocals are better than ever, they compliment each song beautifully. This is on par with Beyond and New World Shadows, but it has diverged a bit from the sound of the previous two albums.

An okay album I guess! I think I prefer this over Beyond, which I found very boring.. And for the discussion for distinct sound: Omnium Gatherum has a VERY distinct sound, you can immediately hear it's Omnium Gatherum, same goes for Insomnium. They both have something unique to offer to the melodeath genre; their own sound

Until the End
As per usual with OG, the slower songs like 'Majesty and Silence' and 'Ophidian Sunrise' are my least liked tracks. But my word, what a song 'Storm Front' is, the perfect album closer and easily my favourite track of the album after many play throughs. My other highlights would be 'Foundation' (especially after about half way through) and 'Frontiers'. As instrumentals go, 'These Grey Heavens' is average.

Agreed! "Storm Front" is my favourite track on the album, though I also really like "Frontiers" and "Majesty and Silence". And yes IMO "These Grey Heavens", whilst by no means bad, is definitely not as memorable as their previous instrumentals, especially the brilliant "Luoto".

On a side note, the beginning of "Storm Front" musically sounds somewhat similar to "Luoto", whilst its atmospheric synth outro reminds me of the ending of "White Palace". Still great though!

Can anyone please do something about that Tony Montana guy rating every album in the top 20 of 2016 (that he didn't listen to) 1/10?

I seldom check the track list after hitting the play button. When I do, it usually means the track is really good. Unfortunately, I checked my PMP which track was on because it sounded really banal, and it was Skylines. I've never heard of the In Flames song discussed above, but whether how much influence that song has been, I don't care because as a standalone track, it's just really rubbish >.>

some of the other tracks are pretty good, but Skylines really leaved a bitter taste in the mouth

Apparently it's becoming the most underrated song of their entire catalog, haha. It's really not that different from what they did on the previous two albums, and therefore quite baffling that so many people don't like it! Labeling it as In Flames imitation is in fact absurdly superficial.

On revisiting, I have to say this is a notable drop in quality from Beyond. "The Pit" is a really good demonstration of what OG are all about, and is easily the best song on the album, but whilst there's a fair amount of good stuff in the rest of the album, there is also a lot of music that kinda happens without really exciting or becoming essential. Nothing really compares to the best songs from the previous album and a handful of songs somewhat drag

Skyline and Frontiers are my favorite songs without detracting from the rest of the album.
