Substantially, Death Metal's spread started on 1989, when bands like Morbid Angel and Obituary released their debut albums -which are two death metal milestones. Morbid Angel created the absolute paranoid death metal sound, while Obituary managed to convert the word "Rotten" into music! We shouldn't also forget the great albums released from Autopsy and Pestilence that year. After these releases everyone believed that even extreme music had a boundary. They were wrong?

Perhaps the deicide album with the crispest guitar sound, and definitely their best.

Although I prefer "Legion" slightly more than this one, it's still a fearsome album and an awesome debut. Songs like "Lunatic Of God's Creation" still sends shivers through me today when I listen to them! lol

Is it me or is the song 'Deicide' a compressed version of 'Black Prophecies' by Dark Angel?

I really don't understand why this album is in such high regard. I mean it's good, and it's a standard death metal album, not much other than that. Reminds me so much of Harmony Corruption by Napalm Death.
edit: if you love this album, then would you explain why? Honestly asking.

I give this album a 10 because it influences my vocal style and writing, Glen Benton sounds so evil in this album that it cannot be mimicked. Overall this album affects the way i write music and is probably the most influential album of all time for me.

I agree with your premise of being a "standard" death metal album. However you have to remember that Death Metal was at its early stages when this record came out so its one of the records which came out before the sound was " the standard death metal" sound.

I also think they were one of the first Death Metal bands to adopt this directly satanic lyrical theme and the music was in tandem with this theme.

I can say Deicide has taken a lot of miss steps throughout their career but Legion and Deicide records are pillars of the genre along with other classic death metal bands.

1993: First Death metal album I ever heard (I heard Sodom's Tapping the Vein that borders death metal) - a friend gave me his walkman and the opening sounds for "Lunatic" blew me away, I was hammered - but happy to find there such an evil sound.

The first half of this album is fantastic, the latter not so much.

8.8/10 for me, with the first 4 songs being the clear stand-outs.

This debut must be one of the most enjoyable and fun death metal albums of all time, and at least some of it is more or less unintentional. Playing the songs themselves on guitar or drums is actually even more fun than just listening to them. The vocals here are some of the best ever. Too bad Glen Benton doesn't have this much variety anymore.

You've got a lot of guts. Let's see what they look like!
