No official Mayhem thread? Weird.

You all know the band, no need for an introduction. Discuss all Mayhem stuff here.

First, I'd like to start off with a question. Is anyone of you familiar with their live album Live In Zeitz?
I came across it lately, and was wondering if it is good. No, I am not talking about Live In Leipzig. Live In Zeitz has Dead on vocals, so I thought it would be nice to have that one, since there is not much of Dead besides Live In Leipzig and the Morbid/Mayhem split 'A Tribute To The Black Emperors'. Thank you!

So, any rumors about some new release? Ordo Ad Chao was released quite some time ago, shouldn't they record something already?
You'd think all this time would be enough for them to find a replacement for Blasphemer...

In other words: there's been sod all from them. Which bothers me a lot.

Love Mayhem's early work. After Euronumous' death, they didn't make anything special.

I'd say Chimera and Ordo Ad Chao are more special than what most black metal bands are releasing.

Grand Declaration was really cool in theory if not actual execution.

Ordo Ad Chao is probably underrated. IMBO it is their best and while not as grand as Grand Declaration was in theory, it was certainly more innovative in execution. i also love the fact that my jewel case came in some metal slip case that, if push came to shove, i could probably kill someone with.

And botht he jewelcase and the cd are red? I have that version too, it's limited to 3000 copies btw. It's hella nice.

I really like Grand Declaration Of War, a trully daring experiment that imo payed off well enough (could have been better but I still think it's great).

It's even better than Grand Declaration Of War but it actually sounds the same to most people.

It's tough to say whether you'll like it or not. I mean, you should because it's atypical and experimental and all that.

EDIT: Just realized what you did there.

I didn't get it cheap, 20 euro, definitely worth it though not only because of the package though, their best album hands down.

I think I have the version Craog has (or it could be with red jewel case I am not sure) so with the cd being black underneath.

a black base, not entirely "none more black" black. like yours. i stated black as you inferred a red-tinted disk.

Shit now I got confused... Too much blackness I should have been more specific about what was red on the disk.

I'm not up for touching male bodies, or distorting old Mayhem album titles, but I'm with those who have a standard clear jewel case of "Ordo Ad Chao". Even though it's my least favourite Mayhem album, I still think it's decent enough. It's funny how they took the almost progressive and highly disciplined music from "Chimera" and dismantled it into chaotic soundscapes on "Ordo Ad Chao". They must've been perfectly aware of that because they admitted it in the title of the album.

If you look at the "Pure Fucking Mayhem" documentary it turns out that the change from "Chimera" to "Ordo ..." was due to Attilla replacing Maniac. He clearly states that he didn't like the direction things where going and wanted a more "chaotic" sound. That's also reflected in the title as pointed out above. Personally I've always preferred Maniacs and Deads vocals before Attillas and my preference in Mayhem recordings is the following:

-Live in Leipzig (not sure if this counts but it's f**king great!)
-Grand Declaration of War
-Chimera
-Wolfs Lair Abyss
-Deathcrush
-DMDS
-Ordo Ad Chao

I don't like touching bodies either, especially not male.

Mayhem desperately needed the change of direction they had. Chimera was a joke of an album, nothing but a relic. Thank fuck for Attila is all I can say. Mayhem made relevant again.

Indeed. Imo Chimera is toally without personilaity and way too sterile as well. Grand Declaration was also sterile but there it fit like a glove

What can I say. I'm of a different opinion but I can understand what you mean. Nothing is improvised on Chimera and the guitar parts are well planned and carefully recorded to create exactly the soundscape that is on the record. Personally I like that (maybe because I play guitar and is impressed by the instrumentation and execution) and I also enjoy Maniacs voice (I also like his solo project "Skitliv" a lot), but it's a matter of opinion and if you're after the "officially true" opinion you should think that DMDS is by far the best record ever recorded, not only by Mayhem but by any artist ever!
