No official Mayhem thread? Weird.

You all know the band, no need for an introduction. Discuss all Mayhem stuff here.

First, I'd like to start off with a question. Is anyone of you familiar with their live album Live In Zeitz?
I came across it lately, and was wondering if it is good. No, I am not talking about Live In Leipzig. Live In Zeitz has Dead on vocals, so I thought it would be nice to have that one, since there is not much of Dead besides Live In Leipzig and the Morbid/Mayhem split 'A Tribute To The Black Emperors'. Thank you!

I like Deathcrush, De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas, and Ordo Ad Chao.

Really in no particular order, those are just my top 3 Mayhem albums.

They're the only ones I listen to pretty much. You wrote them in reverse order of preference too ;]

Chimera was a joke of an album, nothing but a relic.

Calling it a joke would be taking things a bit too far, methinks. It was quite a solid listen for me, nothing to get wet about, though.

But right now, I'm seriously confused whether I like DMDS or OaC more.
DMDS is kinda like an old, traditional classic, whereas OaC is a more modern but equally brilliant take on things.

If I must make the choice between DMDS and OaC I think I'll prefer DMDS but on the other hand I haven't put an effort into OaC at all since I was really put off by the way it was produced (which is of course part of its charm if you like it).

Who's your fave vocalist?!

I like Dead, but his material is so little.

I think my fave is Atilla Csihar, I like his approach to "black" vocals. He uses a lot more dynamics and range in his singing.

Dead is my favourite but as you wrote he didn't record much and most of it is low quality too. Dead aside I prefer Maniac, but that doesn't necessarily mean I dislike the othters. I listened to the better part of "Chimera" last night and to be completely honest I don't understand why people dislike it. It's well produced, there's wonderful guitar, drum and bass playing and Maniac is as fu**ed up as ever.

I've pretty sure I've said this before but Attila reigns supreme simply because he's one of the rare people that can turn vocals into a pure instrument rather than just being a vocalist. As far as I'm concerned Ordo Ad Chao doesn't really have vocals.

Dead also used his voice as a pure instrument and not just as a vocalist would, but that was when he whenpart of Morbid just listen to what he does on 'Disgusting Semla'

But tbh my favourite is Attila as well for the precise reason you stated. I always found Dead to be horribly overrated as a vocalist anyway. I think most people praise the shit out of him just because he's gone to meet his Maker.

Live In Leipzig worshipping is something weird to me. It's ok, nice to have, but that's it. It's not even the best Mayhem live there is, and it's faaar behind the actual Mayhem albums/EP's goodness.

The reason why it is worshipped is because people worship Dead cause he is no more. But I agree it is not too good a Mayhem live album at all.

When I first listened through the Mayhem catalog I didn't know anything about what had happened and who played on what album and so on and I still liked Live in Leipzig so saying that people only like Dead because he's dead is just BULLSHIT! Maybe some people do but he was a great artist in writing performing and recording!

I enjoy the Leipzig album, I think Dead was a fine vocalist and his style brought a lot to the table for what would become the "standard" for black metal vox's...

BUT Atilla is still the best Mayhem vocalist

You can indeed only talk for yourself... But still, it doesn't take enough time in the internet to see the massive Dead fanbase with not a really reason besides the dude being... dead.

Might be the only one here, but Maniac is my favorite Mayhem vocalist. I love the "evil witch" shrieks and his clean voice is pretty cool too.

Of course, Attila is also excellent... his style fits perfectly with OAC but on DMDS I have the impression that a "classic" BM voice would fit better, even if he still does some pretty sick stuff (Pagan Fears is just awesome).

As for Dead... well, the little that I listened was pretty good, but nothing that really stands out.... at least he has extra kvlt-points for being dead....

You have to admit that Dead was at least a very enigmatic figure!

And he technically died like 2 times before he actually killed himself too! He used to keep dead shit in bags and smell them for inspiration...self mutilate all the time.

He really lived up to his name fully...He's a legend in his own right.

But Atilla is still a better singer haha

Well I suppose one man's lunatic is another man's legend lol.

But the whole dying thing wasn't his fault. He has some serious health problems and had to be "brought back" multiple times while he was in the hospital. Obviously the third time got him...don't know many doctors that can resuscitate from a shotgun wound to the dome haha.

Explain to me how he's contributed to music as much as any of those artists? He made a few basement quality black metal recordings then off'd himself.

Yeah, I suppose he should be honored in the same way you'd show respect to any number of dead people, but in the context of music, his existence is not even a blip on the radar when it comes to importance compared to those others you've listed.
